Marathon Maniac #3309

I was sooo tired yesterday, I forgot if I posted my run or not...had to read through yesterdays daily to find out...any hoo. Much dreaded, but got my last long run in before my taper. My resting HR finally came down after being high for about 2 weeks. Friday night it was 45, and Sat morning it was 40 where it should be. (Needed this run to be good for my confidence, which was lacking) 21 miles - 2:52:18 - 8:13 ave pace with 10 miles at MP - 7:55...good run on tired legs. I know I have been running my MP miles too fast, so I really tried to nail them this run. One thing that helped was, Ribs said to work from 8:00 down, VS 7:30 up...that worked for me. Also, worked on my hydration and fuel needs, and carbo loaded and rested just like it was a race. How do you guys carry all your stuff during a Marathon, fanny pack I suppose. Guess I could be like Bob and carry my cell phone and call someone with 2 miles to go...geez, I don't think I would have the energy for that during that point of the race. And also kept my shirtless streak alive...although it was only 39 degrees out, but sunny.I saw other runners bundled up like it was below 0 or something. But it was 55 degrees when I finished...IRC. Well, off to read some more RR's....and good luck to our DEAR MARY, and alllll the racers!!! Have a wonderful day all. Soon as it gets light out, I'm off for a 7 to 8 mile easy run. Don't know why, but I was up at 4:30 this morning. Whew...MADE IT TO TAPER TIME!!!....finally Timbo

Running has given me the courage to start, the determination to keep trying, and the childlike spirit to have fun along the way - Run often and run long, but never outrun your Joy of running!

    The Jogger

Morning Gang Tim enjoy your taper, that was a cracking long run and I like spareribs advice on the pace. I think I'm brave running in shorts and tee at this time of year. No run for me today but rode along beside MrsRoy on her 3.25m Today is a good race day, one of my relay mate's is doing the Amsterdam marathon, a friend from another UK running site is running a marathon after having just finished her chemo for BC and lots of Boomers racing today...........so good luck to all em! Now have I left something out Undecided ah MARY HAVE A GRETA FIRST MARATHON, GO MARY GO!!!!!!!!!!!! Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile Roy
Congratulations Tim. Getting that last long run done is always a great feeling. Ribs gave you some great advice! Work slowly into your MP. That's the Ticket! I had another good run this morning. 15.6 miles at 8:55 pace overall. Miles 3 through 15 were all sub 9 minute pace. And miles 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, and the last 6/10 were all right at MP. I felt comfortable throughout, though the last 2 miles were a challenge. I thought about adding 1.4 miles to make 40 for the week. But the legs said "Better Not". So I stopped. Breezy, 72F and 71%. Not bad. Really anxious to hear about Mary and Karin's marathons! Go Gyrls! Bill

        Hill Runner

Good morning guys, NNice runs everyone... Perfect Fall weather here this morning 42F and sunny. Today was my last medium long run before Ridge to Bridge marathon next Saturday. 13.1 invigorating miles of hills @ 8:42 pace which is very close to my BQ pace of 8:37 and the fastest pace that I've ever run on these hills. It's going to be interesting next Saturday....whatever the outcome, it's going to be close! Now for some yard work cross training...enjoy the day everyone.

          Upcoming Races:

          Boston Marathon, Boston,MA 04/15/13
          Grandfather Mountain Marathon,Boone NC 07/14/13
Thunder Road Marathon, Charlotte NC 11/13

Where are all the wimmin this morning? 7.5 miles at a 9:41 pace for me. IRC here again - 43F, just a little wind and blue skies. It will be a great afternoon to tailgate before the Packer game. Tim - enjoy your hard-earned taper. You are so ready to run your marathon. Way to keep that shirtless streak alive! How low must the temps get before you "bundle up?" Roy - good job pacing Mrs. Roy this morning. How's the weather these days? We have some friends leaving for London this Thursday for a couple of weeks. Almost 40 miles this week, Breger? You were smart to stop. How is your hand healing? Peter - sounds like you're ready to have a taper week as well. Nice run this morning. Like you, I'll be cross training with a rake and lawn mower in a little while. Hope Mary, Karin and all our other marathoners are feeling our good luck wishes and running strong. Enjoy your Sunday, everyone.

Busy weekend so a quick weekend wrap-up. Will have to read later. SAT: Our one and only cross-country 5K (or as I like to call it, the “rocks, ruts, and roots race”). Tough, hilly and rugged course and an odd 4:30 p.m. start time. After a 3-mile warm-up, I managed a course PR of 22:50 and, more importantly, didn’t twist an ankle doing it. SUN: About 14 hours later, it was out for a sorta-long run. I cut back the miles a bit, given the previous day’s race. Just over 17 miles @ 8:18 with the final four miles at sub-8:00. IRC with the exception of a good stiff wind down by the water. Cooler temps were wonderful. The Sox do manage to keep it interesting, don’t they? Have a good day!

              Be safe. Be kind.

Gotta love those Sox! Tim I don;t think Ribs could have given you any better advice...I never really thought of telling you that but he hit it on the head...starting a little slower and working your way down to marathon pace i s much better than starting fast and working your way up. Today's run for me was a nice easy - 15 miles - 2:07:11 (8:29) - Avg HR 126 Max HR 143 - Sunny & 32 degrees It was pretty breezy, especially along the water. I hope that it isn't so breezy for those running Bay State although I know it can be tough. Here's hoping everyone that is racing today has a greta race, I can't wait to read the race reports...almost as much as I can't wait until tonight Sox game...GO SOX! Big grin

                  Nice job! And then….
http://www.merrimackvalleystriders.com/?q=node/404 the link above is from the tufts 10k monday -- i'm with a few women from my running group and JOAN BENOIT SAMUELSON!! so cool!! the woman next to me - Lyn - has run this race all 32 years so she was in the VIP tent and asked Joan to take a pic with us -- then at the finish Joan was out there shaking hands with as many finishers as she could and i was one of them!! she really is a cool lady!!
Very Kewl!! Nice runs so far today folks, and Tramps – congrats on the course PR for you yesterday. 6.3 recovery-paced miles for me today in 34 degrees – first time in pants. I continue to believe that long pants slow my running down. Of course, it might have been last night’s wine…. Learned a new domino game called Mexican Train. I highly recommend it – very fun. A set will probably find it’s way under our Christmas tree this year. Happy Sunday!

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

                  i'm lovin' it... MM#1949

Tim..Wow that was a crackin run! You are very ready for a sub 3:30 debut marathon! A lot of us wear race ready shorts which have lots of mesh pockets on the backside for gels and e-caps etc. Peter... the work is done and all your hills have you well prepared. Trust your training! Go Mary go...... she's still running! Maybe I'll salvage this Nov 2nd marathon yet. 19 hilly miles today in 2:54:37 (9:11 pace, AHR 150). My calf was very calm at mile 15 and beyond and only mildy sore before. So far so good after, nothing sore (fingers crossed) <erika's>>></erika's>

Responding to yesterday's daily, as well as today's so far: Holly, nice long wave run yesterday! Hope your ankle is OK. Nice to hear you complain about a different body part for a change! Big grin Craneium, good to hear from you. Hope your sprained ankle heals up soon. Kevin, sorry for the loss of your uncle-in-law. Sounds like he was a wonderful guy. Jeanne, congrats on 2nd in your AG in the 5K! And in a very big age group, too! What DickyG would call 50 - death! Cool that your sister ran, too. Erika, hope your foot holds up for NYC. Hope Mr. Splash-o-matic isn't at the pool again today! You deserve to be grumpy - probably better to take it out on us here at the forum than on your family. Francesca, glad you and DD had a good trip to Italy and your mom is doing better - welcome home, and nice 14 miler yesterday! Tall, congrats on 3rd in AG in your 10K! That's awesome, especially in a race with national champions! Denise, nice pic of you and your friends with Joanie! That's worth framing. SteveP, I loved your volunteer RR, about putting out cups of water and picking them up at the end! Cool TimBo, excellent long run! "Cracking" as Roy called it. Enjoy tapering! Also nice long runs for Breger, Peter, Tramps, Mainerunnah, and Perch so far today. I did a carpy 9-mile run yesterday - absolutely no energy, even on the downhills. I was shooting for 10 or 11 but even 9 was an effort. The dogs came along for the first 4. Avg pace was a super-sluggish 12:30 mm. I decided to adapt a despair.com saying for the situation: If you can't run fast, learn to enjoy running slowly. So I tried to get what enjoyment I could, even though my energy was low - it was a beautiful day, blue skies and 55 degrees. I would have put off my long run till today if I could, but today I'm fasting in preparation for my (first ever) colonoscopy tomorrow, so I'll have even less energy today. Sad Can't wait to read the RRs!

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.

stumpy, I'm sorry to hear about your wife's uncle. My thoughts are with the whole family. dg, I'm jealous of the lunch meeting with all the boomers. Jlynne, nice 5K with PR and 2nd in AG. Tall, good job in your 10K with AG award. deez, way to go in your 5K with improvement over last year. mariposai, congrats on your 5K with course PR and 2nd in AG. Tramps, you did well in your XC 5K with a course PR. craneium, it was nice to hear from you. Nice long runs for Holly, Franc, Tammy, bike, breger, Peter (fast on the hills), Tramps, maine, and perch. This morning, it was in the low 30s and almost calm. I got in 8 miles in a little under 1:19 for a 9:50 pace and negative splits. I look forward to reading the race reports already posted and those to come. It's a busy racing weekend for our crew. A good day and good runs for all. TomS
Paced my friend Julie today...total for me of 12 miles in 1:49:00 for a 9:05 pace

i actually saw Mary today as she passed the gatorade stop that I was working. Pretty much a miracle, as we were before the 3-mile mark with 18,000 runners passing by, most of them in one huge mass. But there she was in her pink (?) outfit, smiling and waving. Not to spoil her RR, but I assume she was smiling again when she crossed the finish line (yes, she made it in style!). No running for me today of course, but I might post a report in a few days on what it was like working one of these fluid stations in a major metropolitan marathon. A fun few hours.

Yeah, Timbo made it to taper. Wasn't sure he'd make it. Now that he'll be tapering down, it's time to worry for us! Nice run, Tim. Peter, you've done so well and it'll be a good race for you, I'm sure of it. Don't overdo the yard work... it can make you sore in places you don't realize until you're in the race! (BTDT...) Nice thought, Carolyn. I love Despair.com... keep wanting to order some posters for my office, but I've heard our university president doesn't find them so funny and he does meander down our way every now and then... fun to run with the dogs, wish my dog could do that still. I found an article on my foot ailment, I think Tramps (nice course PR, BTW!) originally posted a link to Mercy Medical Center for something else, and I looked around for my problem. Bingo. "Second Metatarsophalangeal Joint Instability" sums it up nicely... at least how it started. The pain has migrated up and out a bit, but I think it's all related. I don't understand all of it, it's a pretty high level discussion, but did find these tidbits: "Radiographs are important to assess joint congruity." My podiatrist didn't take x-rays, but I saw him back in May. I think now it's time to see what's going on in there. "Nonsurgical treatment of fixed deformity is generally unsuccessful." Great. "...70% achieved good or excellent results with a single intraarticular injection of steroid and a stiff-soled shoe." Well, I don't know about running marathons in a "stiff-soled shoe," but I'm thinking about the shot... "The relief of pain and swelling from corticosteroid injections is dramatic and almost immediate." Wow... It goes on about a lot of other stuff, but basically all the stuff I'm doing now will provide temporary relief and I will get better, but overall will continue to get worse because of how I'm built (thanks, dad), and the fact that I'm getting older (not a bad thing). I'll try to get in to see my podiatrist this week and will take this with me. But for now, I'll stick to my pool plan. 1 hour of mind-numbingly tedious pool running yesterday. Up to 2 hours of it planned for today. I'd better get going while there are still 6 lanes open at the pool. Ok, now to go check some race web sites... Anyone have Mary's number? If she posted it, I've misplaced it. CNYrunner was #130 at Baystate.

Erika, ({{ }}), it was 6106. I think! Doug, I'm so glad you two met! I guess you already did this, but Mary said I could tell everyone that she made it! & that's she's happy feeling great. She'll write her RR in a bit.... I saw her twice, & she looked wonderful. We missed each other after the race, which I'm sad about, but it happens. me, I just walked a lot!
