First day of August, 2014 (Read 32 times)

Tramps

When Jay’s on vacation this place just sleeps in!

Welcome to August!  It’s feeling summery again here with temps rising and humidity already high.  It was wonderful, though, to get a few days relief right in the middle of the summer.

Nice to see both Bilbo and Brian back.

Blazin’—I was referring to the need for a 90-degree turns in your pipe if you go out the wall, instead of straight up.  I do believe that even with the new stoves that reduces efficiency and adds some creosote.  But, yes, the newer stoves are nothing like the old tin cans.  We’ve got a non-catalytic Vermont Castings, which burns well at lower temps (which is often all we need) but you lose a bit of efficiency (rated mid-70’s, if I recall correctly).  Since we’re in a mild climate, two or three cords of wood easily gets us through the winter…much of which comes off our property.  I always give the flue pipes a brushing in the Fall, just to be safe, but it’s always remarkably clean.

I’m finishing up my summer online course, which has been a lot of work and a lot of fun.  I assign a final small-group project and one of the groups did their project on changing demographics, in part because of their own diversity.  In a group of 5 students they had:

    • an Arab woman who is half Egyptian/half Sudanese;
    • a white guy who is half Irish/half German;
    • an African-American man;
    • a Latino woman who is half Peruvian/half West Indian; and
    • a black African woman from Sierra Leone.

    What a great learning opportunity!

    EZ 5 for me.

    Be safe. Be kind.

Thanks for the start-up Tramps.  Good thing I made one last check for a daily thread before I started one.

I was feeling pretty sluggish this morning but I forced myself out the door in a quest to drag my butt around for 3 miles.  But about a mile into the run I got in the groove and ended up with 5.25 miles at a nice pace.

If all is going to plan, the Tallahassee clan should be rolling north through Georgia about now.  1100 miles of driving over 2 days.

I guess I better stop procrastinating and get to work.  I have been gradually embracing my new role and today I will attempt to spend the whole day at it.  Writing up technical documentation and dealing with people instead of quietly writing code alone in my little private office.  It could be my future life so I better like it!  As long as I get in a good hard run to start the day I think I will be ok.

      Sayhey! MM#130

Good Mornin' and may I point out, it is Friday, in case anyone failed to notice that!

EggsZackery, Dave, a good run to start off your day will go a looong way to get things going your way.

Sounds as if you'll have some interesting reading with that assignment, Tramps.  [Like that "Bilbo & Brian."  could be a singing duo.]

Thanks for the reminder, marg, that Jay is on vacation.  Hope he is having fun.  In his case, it would appear to be very "well-deserved."  (Ever notice on TV, whenever a news person takes one, the remaining folks always refer to his or her vacation as well-deserved?  Always sounds a little forced or defensive.)

The followingparagraph has nothing to do with running alert.

BLeh.  I feel that way about one of the oldest loves of my life, baseball.  I have never gotten comfy with the way trading has devolved.  Used to be a team was a team and trades were big deals.  Back then, I collected baseball cards because I loved the game and I was a kid and its what kids who love baseball did.  Now, I think I should start up again just to keep track of who plays where.  Meh.

OK, thanks, just needed to get that off my chest.  Hiya brugermeister!  Hey, what Holly wrote yesterday:

"Bregnet!  We have missed you!  Awesome post with lots to comment on, but only enough time to say, HI! and tell Deb HI! Also, will you be hosting the party for next year's Traverse City race?  Just sayin".... "

How far you running this weekend Erika?  I mean, what will be your longest run?

Good luck this weekend enke .

I know what I wanted to tell y'all.  Anyone else have a store that does this?   We have a Fresh Market nearby, normally fairly spendy little place but this month, the Thursday night "special" is one we could enjoy.  It's a deal where you get a meal in bag with a decent discount.  I had Speedsters last night so I forwarded the store email to DH, who grabbed the pass and bought the "stuff."  We got a pound of  steak/chicken/shrimp [guess which he chose], a large assortment of cut-up fresh veggies for stir fry, package of soba noodles (could have opted for rice or udon), another choice of sauce (DH went with Saffron Road brand Thai Red Curry--very good, low fat/sodium), package of dry roasted peanuts and a loaf of pound cake (that's going to the office).  Having everything all assembled made cooking a breeze, and it turned out better than I was expecting.

Still being prudent, last night did 8 at an 8:40 pace.  Our group leader always takes a photo and posts it on FB, a little tradition, with a comment.  Last night's was how it was 94 degrees when we started out at 6:30 pm.  The upside of that is this morning felt super; it was just 76!  Since I ran last night, just held a 9:15 pace this am, however, appreciating the sunrise...which is getting noticably later.

        HAppy Weekend,

        grins,

Good morning Tramps, misread your post (forgive me) and agree that draft on a stove is important - don't you just love wood heat?

TomS - Have a good visit with your family and extended family as well.

Bill - Nice to here that you are enjoying retirement. Sounds like some fun projects that you have been working on. I have not been too active posting here either until recently.

Glad you popped in here BTY - feel free to give us an update anytime.

Dave and Amy - nice runs early in the morning.

Just have some power walk miles scheduled for this evening. Have a great weekend all.

            Hey all,

Been spotty in here for a while. Too busy with work and stuff. I guess things will slow down sometime so I can catch up.

I noticed its Friday Amy. However it was during my fifth conference call this morning. Only three more to go and I can actually get to work.

We have an Earth Fare in town and I absolutely love their meat and fish section. All free range, hormone free and you can really tell the difference. It costs a little more but it's worth it to us.

Miles are starting to come back but who knows. 5k with my son this weekend. Perhaps I can stay close to him this time.

            Happy racing and running folks.

            Cheers.

Happy August everyone!  My son has been looking forward to August all summer because it's the start of pre-season football.

leaving a week from today for our quick trip to Seattle to see a couple of Mariner's games. Looking forward to the trip (but not the drive - 8 hrs) and about 20 degrees cooler in temps. I've lived in So. Oregon for 13 yrs now and this is the hottest/driest I recall. Several wildfires going on right now due to approximately 3000 lightening strikes a couple nights ago. the one closest to my home (15 miles) seems to be under control and relatively small at 240 or so acres. it's in tough terrain to attack so the fact that it only grew to a bit over 200 acres is miraculous. Other fires in the mountains outside of Ashland are growing much more rapidly right now.

Not much planned for my wknd really - dog training tomorrow (my dogs) and rafting with friends on Sunday. 100+ degrees will be a perfect day to float down the river.

                Team?  what's that mean?

the word is never used by announcers here in Seattle.

It's always the "organization," that is when they have t\ime to fit in anything about baseball in the more than 100 commercializing interruptions between the top-and-bottom half of every inning and, more-and-more, after each batter too.  Unfortunately, I got hooked on baseball in little league days and by Vin Scully announcing the World Series when Gillette was the only diversion from the game.  oh well.

                .

ps tammy - let us know if you find a convenient local fun run when you're in Seattle so maybe divechief and enke and I can meet-up too. I'll be sticking around most of the month and only have the annual triathlon on the books for now.

As long as I get in a good hard run to start the day I think I will be ok.

                  I agree!

                  Amy - that sounds yummy!

Up at 5 with DH even though I work a half-day from home on Fridays now, but I am loving getting my LR in before I start.  Last night's weight training class taught me that I have not been working hard enough at home.  Only a 45 minute class, but we worked it!  At 5am, 10 hours after the class, the soreness hadn't really set in yet, but as the morning has gone on, my hamstrings and glutes are getting more and more stiff, letting me know that they got a workout.

Met my friend Carissa at 5:30 and we ran 16 lovely miles together along the river, then split as she went on to do 26 miles (training for a 50-mile race).  Two more miles home, then two more on the TM makes 20 miles for me today.

                  Couples golf league tonight!

                  Happy Friday!

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

I'm in the same boat as C-R - not able to keep up around here like I wish I could.  But I see Byll's back!

Holly - Did you friend end up doing that 50k that was going to be so close to the 50 miler?  I can't remember when the races were.

Wednesday I did an EZ 5 miles, yesterday I did an hour of core/ST, and this morning was 4 miles.

Yesterday was a stressful day at work as we were working out butts off the get some pleadings served before the end of the day (Amy and Tammy can sympathize.)  A HUGE amount of documents had be sorted through, scanned, then bate-stamped.  Luckily, we have a computer system that does automatic bate-stamping or we would've been screwed.  I've been working as a legal secretary for close to 20 years, and I still don't understand why attorneys wait 'til the very last minute to get things done.  Drives me nuts.

Today is my and The Hub's 27th anniversary (I was a child bride).  Celebrating by going to the Crabs baseball game with my work compadres tonight.  It'll be fun.

Enjoy your Friday and have a great weekend ~

Firewood Porn... ha! Love it. Good way to use up the results of the storm.

Amy, no big distance this weekend. I'm sorta tapering.   Have a half marathon tomorrow that's looking like it'll be a drippy muddy mess (again?) and maybe 10 or 11 or so on Sunday, depending on how I feel. Just a little over 2 weeks to Denver.

Holly, I'm so out of shape from no strength training I'd probably be crippled after a 45 minute class! I keep telling myself I'll get back to it soon, after whatever is coming up passes, but there's always something else it seems. Usually it's a winter thing I do when running cuts back, but last winter I ran more than ever and hardly ever went to the gym.

Happy Anniversary, Leslie and Shorty! Child bride and all!

More rain here! Sure wish I could send it to anyone else who needs it. Worst. Summah. Evah. And August is usually our rainiest month. Oh goodie!

                        BTY

                          Good first Friday all;

D'jever notice how some days you got it and some days you don't?   I have to confess that I have been having more have days than don't have days lately, and I am not always thankful enough for them.  Two years of struggling with right hip, hip flexor, quad, and ITB and left Achilles issues has taught me to be thankful for the good days, but now I have begun taking them for granted.

What a greta run today!  I started out with the usual mile warmup and 4:00 of stretching (which includes making my shoelaces tight enough - don't ask, it's a personality disorder I think) and began what was then supposed to be a 20:00 recovery jog with maybe some strides thrown in near the end.  So I forgot to start the watch for the first 1/4 - no biggie, I just started it at the 1/4 mile mark; ran the first timed 1/4 in 2:08;  next 1/4 in 2:03. next one in 2:03, next one in 2:05, so my recovery jog had quickly morphed into a fast-end-of-Easy run.   The next mile was in 8:00 even; next one in 8:03.   Final 1/4 mile, I cruised in, in 2:08.

So yesterday was supposed to be a tempo day and I had to cut the tempo short after 2.5 miles, 1/2 mile short of goal, as I was slowing down quickly and not holding pace.  Today was just the opposite, and I had to keep reminding myself not to run "hard" two days in a row.  The run just kept coming to me and I enjoyed every minute of it, pain free.

Now to start working on my doowops .

Oh no!  I have firewood envy!!

Great to see Byll pop in yesterday, and BTY.  Byll, sounds like you are very much enjoying retirement!

#19 - Date report (last night):   you know, I almost cancelled on this guy, and I have never done that before.  I just had this weird feeling "the actor" was going to be arrogant, stuffy and full of himself.  And some other issues I thought about....   Anyway, I was so wrong, he was a sweetheart and just lovely!  I liked him and had a really nice time.  Not sure about another date with him though, it's possible if he is interested, however he is at the very outer edge of my age range preference, and looks it (or older).  Interesting story, which I have heard a number of times now in other situations.....his wife left him for another woman, to whom she is now legally married.  Poor guy.  Being a drama major, he clearly has an artistic side, and style (whereas I have none!)

                            Oh running....

I am planning on doing the 10.5 mile club run tomorrow.  Kind of hoping Door#18 shows up.  Wouldn't mind seeing him again...

And Tammy, if you are in town soon and have time to meet up with the local RA runners....I'd be all for that!

"During a marathon, I run about two-thirds of the time. That's plenty." - Margaret Davis, 85 Ed Whitlock regarding his 2:54:48 marathon at age 73, "That was a good day. It was never a struggle."

                            Sayhey! MM#130

Oooopps, enke, so it was a pre-weekend date.  Glad it was fun.  What's in a number (age)?  Give 'im one more chance, I say.

O Leslie, when I first got to SD, I worked as a paralegal and I was the WORST at bates stamping, ever.  HATED it, too.  (BTW, I do not leave things until the last minute, usually.  Don't like the pressure!)    Happy Anniversary!

How much golfing tonight, Holly?  That's one active day you're having there.  Sounds like a super run.  Hope mine goes half as well tomorrow.  Thanks for your schedule, Erika.  I'm doing one same time you are and haven't figured out what I'm doing until then.

Science Friday is on Ultra marathons today.  So far: "training is important."

Sad Amy.   There is now, after my lunch, only one-half slice of the 1.5  lb. loaf of sourdough bread I toted home (happily!) from San Francisco.    It was so good, so good, so good.  (I got a lot more of those 'so goods' to use up )

                              grins,

Leslie - not sure which race you mean.  I ran a 50K in June, but did not run one I would have liked to run 3 weeks later because of DD's slumber party. I am, however, running a certain 50K in Vermont at the end of September, while my braver friends are running the 50-mile option.

Erika - you are so right, I have been slacking, doing only light workouts.  I think I will go to this class every Tuesday and Thursday if I can, especially because it is my friend Renee who is giving the class, but also because I need it.

Enke - you could be his "young hottie."

Amy - just 9 holes of golf tonight.  Not like Ribs, who used to knock out 18 holes walking and carrying his bag after a 20-mile run.  THAT is a workout. And I LOVE a good sourdough bread.
