    Mornin' everyone.

In the middle of everything else we were doing, we kept going outside to the back deck to check on the progress of the eclipse last night. We could see it through our living room window, but it seemed wrong not to be outside. What an impressive sight. We were also imagining how scary that would be to someone who had no idea what an eclipse was, such as primitive man.

Sorry you're not healed up, Twocat. Congrats on having the wisdom to back off again until you really have recovered. I keep thinking back to Rib's column on injuries from a few weeks ago...

Econo, how'd you like the electric bike? I don't know anything about them, so I can't offer any advice.

Evanflein, I'm glad you all are taking time to remember and talk about Midnight. It is difficult to let go of a pet that has been family, but talking about him makes it a little easier.

Holly, please feel welcome to rant as needed; we all know it can help at times. I also think you should call your dad and tell him there was a miscommunication. What happened is unfortunate, but perhaps you can still mend that fence. What a shame, too, about your crown. Those things never happen at a good time, do they?

Leslie, how good of you to work side-by-side with the hub on Saturday! Nice work on the MacKay yesterday. And great story about the letter your dad sent that the woman has kept.

Wildchild, the only reason I don't do 100K's is so I won't have to sing the Big Red Bar Blues. Yeah, right...  Nice work, Milktruck.

Nice shots of sunset and the monster in the water, Steve.

Monday is my SRD, so no workout this morning. Just as well - I have a busy day ahead.

    Have a greta Monday!

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

Thanks for that recap, Jay. I stayed up past bedtime to watch the beginning of the eclipse, but sadly had to get to sleep before it was over.

Holly, I hope this week goes better for you.

After resting yesterday, I did 3 super easy miles this morning. Of course, since my race is on Saturday, today my hip hurts a little. I am hoping it's just a taper-ache and will be all better by tomorrow.

      Good day to all!

        Hiya,

Sorry for loss of your cat, Erika, and the tough weekend, Holly.

We had cloudy skies so the eclipse was obscured.    Any photos out there??

We did have a spectacular sunrise yesterday morning, before the clouds took over the skies.  Lots of folks training for different races, Chicago, MCM, NYC, so long runs seem to be on everyone's schedule.    We have a joke about the "toga parties' we put on in the parking lot.  After our runs, most of us have bath towels (to um, wipe off the humidity that accumulates on one after running in SW FL and/or to protect one's car seats for the ride home) and being goofy runners, some have taken to fashioning them into toga-wear.  And then the FB photo posters just fuel this behavior, of course.

While I continue to post slow runs, I am feeling stronger.  Maybe this is still part of recovering from my blown ankle last November?  I find as the anniversary of the injury approaches, I think more about it.  And run slower.

Made a yeast bread yesterday while monitoring the games.  Fig and Black Pepper.  The pepper complements the sweetness of the figs.  And I'm hoping the moistness of the figs will help maintain the bread's freshness.

Got some capers for in my salads b/c I had a hankering.  Where else do you use capers?

Capering off to get some work finished.

        grins,

        A

Holly, I would begin the phone call by telling him how sorry you are that he didn't come to your home, because you were so hoping to see him.  Then let him explain what the reason was for his non-attendance, which will give you the opportunity to explain the truth. But of course you should call. Sorry this happened.

Well, with the youngest off to college, we don't have the full family dinners any more, but yesterday the two older ones came, Spare Tire and Prime Rib, and we had a blast.  Then after they left the Saint and I went out and watched the eclipse.  Fortunately we had very little cloudiness so we got a great look at it.  Amazing.

Time to write today's DMN running column, the title of which is a Yogi-ism, "You can observe a lot just by watching," about the stuff you learn about running by paying more careful attention and using reasoning.  Yogi was in no way a dumb man.  Spareribs

            +11!!!  as to Yogi, Ribs.

Say, forgot to note Bob Hearn's super finish at the Spartathlon, a 153 mile run from the Acropolis to Sparta.  His time of 29:35 made him the 28th overall and first US male.  And he's a masters runner.

The women's side was won by Katalin Nagy, from the US!  (In 25:07)

Thanks for the link, Amy.  I'll be reading that later.  And as for capers:  chop up some white onion real small, then put a layer cream cheese, white onion, capers, and smoke salmon on just about anything (I usually use a really good cracker) and enjoy.  Also, saute onions, garlic, and sun dried tomatoes in a little olive oil, at the end throw in some capers, toss with some pasta, top it off with a good parmesan cheese . . . .  I'm getting hungry.

              SteveP - Beautiful pics.

We watched some of the eclipse, but needed to get to bed.  I woke up again around 11:00 and it was over, but around 5:30, the moon was so bright, it was like someone was shining a flashlight in our bedroom window.

              SRD day for me.

Have a good week, friends ~~

Holly S. I hope you patch things up with your dad.  I will toss in my 2 cents and agree you should call to straighten out with him what happened.

Another day of couch potatoing.  Yesterday I started getting the Halloween decorations up!  Scarecrow planting done!  Next up will be wraith hanging.  Then light stringing (bats and skulls).  Somewhere in all that will be Halloween tree moving from the garage to the family room.

Since fatozzig brought up food.  With pumpkin season here I have started roasting sugar pumpkins.  My first creation with the results was a a pumpkin risotto with spinach and feta.  It is really good.  I wish I could say it was my creation but I stole if from Allrecipies.

Holly, I feel so bad about the situation with your dad.  After you made a little progress at the funeral and then to have it derailed through no fault of yours, has to be devastating.  I hope you can remedy the situation.  Also, I'm so sorry to hear about your tooth.  I've felt bad about my wife's tooth troubles but you've got her beat in a contest no one wants to be in.

Nice long runs for MIke, DrRobin, Holly, fatozzig, wild, and evan.

This morning, it was in the mid 60s and there was a light wind.  I got in 5 miles at an 11:22 pace.

A good day and good runs for all.

                    TomS

Holly, I hope the miscommunication all gets sorted out.

And the tooth, shoot that stinks!

I did go to a hiway overpass that had a clear view east last night with BE and DS to watch the eclipse.  It wasn't as exciting as I had hoped, but kind of neat.

                      Love capers.....

                      Salmon, cream cheese, red onion

                      Or on pizza?

That pumpkin risotto sounds great too.  I'm going to go to the cabin in two weeks and will spend hours just cooking all my favourite fall foods - Borscht, apple and pumpkin pie etc.

I ran yesterday, but forgot to post.  5 hilly miles.  I have a 5 K race next Sunday, but I don't feel like I can PR it.  I tried one mile fast yesterday, and was disappointed I couldn't get the pace under 9:00, although it was pretty hilly (both up and down).  I jogged for awhile, then I tried 1/2 mile fast, and was also disappointed the pace was only 8:44, as there was only a short gentle uphill for part of it.  My 5K PR pace is 8:43, and I don't see how I am going to beat that, unless I get sproinkier as the week goes on.  But, who knows?

                      Trails are hard!

Holly--you had things started, just hope that no one is too stubborn to continue.  Give it a try and good luck.

Managed 4.6 and 5.9 mile runs in Maine over the weekend.  IRC both days--high 40's and sunny.  better speed (relative) than expected after a week layoff.  Need to do better this week.

Moon was pretty neat.  I didn't make it to the end, either.  The Oatmeal had this to say about it.

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.

...I missed this Eclipse, but marked my calendar for 18-years from now for the next one.......

                          Me, too.

I tried to call my dad, but he didn't pick up.  I didn't leave a voicemail, but will try again tomorrow.  On the plus side, I am getting acquainted with my little brother (half-brother, stepmom's only born child), which was difficult when she was alive, and finding that he is a pretty cool guy.  He said he will try to make opportunities for us to get together with Dad in a casual way soon.

Another (BIG) plus - the dentist was able to glue the crown, broken tooth, post and all, back in.  It won't hold forever, but if it will give me a couple of years more, I can delay that financial hardship to another day.

Also, I am REALLY looking forward to seeing Erika in WV on the 9th and 10th - I miss that lady!

                          Things are looking up.

No run today, but 35 minutes or so of weights and core.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

My (now) usual Monday 30" - very nice after-work

The eclipse was spectacular and I am enjoying the photos that various folks took - Amy I am seeing them on FB

Fig and Pepper bread - sounds delicious!

                              Hello everybody!

                              All good news, Holly!

I had a pretty good workout, tonight.  2 mile warm up in 15:32--2 miles in 12:52--.25 mile recovery in 3:51--2 miles in 12:42--.25 mile recovery in 3:53--2  miles in 12:46--1 mile cool down in 7:58.  The good thing about it is the effort I put into it...it just never felt hard.  I was actually smiling as I was cruising down a small hill in the last mile.

I hate to say this, because I'm afraid of jinxing things, but the weather has been fantastic the last couple weeks.  Even when I ran in the rain, it was just a light drizzle that really helped my run.  As much as I complain about the crappy weather we have, I feel like I should say something when the weather is this nice.

                              Okay--gotta go!  See ya.

                                Howdie friends.

Great way to end the work day, La Tortuga, with a nice 30'.

Enkie, how was the relay experience for you?

Holly, I am proud of you for making that phone call.

I did not see the eclipse, but I did enjoy a lovely pre-dawn run with my rather chatty RP. Getting back to normal life after three weeks vacation is hard.

Twocat, please heal up soon. Have fun with the decorations.
