Hey all - I thought I'd start a new thread before Kevin has to request a new thread Big grin Jem - glad to hear you are going to the doc. Let us know what happens. Teresa - Congratulations on your 5K!! Sounds like a great time to me. Smile My fastest was 31:59 in those days - ahhh how I'd love to get back there. BTB - Thanks! yes my doc is great Smile I actually had a similar one, but a pulmonologist when I lived in L.A. He helped me get up to running 5 miles at a time.. hoping this one can do the same. I know some of the older members of this thread know about my dad.. but you remind me that not everyone does. So, I'll explain. It seems I wrote a history ... probably more than you want to know. Anyway, here it is: My dad is a long-term Type 1 (juvenile) diabetic - longterm as in 42-43 years.. he was diagnosed when I was a toddler. Its been a hard road watching him go from a very active person to deteriorate into barely living. Right now, he is almost blind, he has hemolytic anema (used to be intermittent) which causes retaining lots of water, and severely low hemoglobin levels, he has severe neuropathy - about 2 years ago he was admitted to the hospital for amputation surgery & ended up in & out of hospital all year with surgeries & infections. He had many docs tell him they needed to cut above his right leg, but he didn't believe them. He finally found one that tries to save limbs & really cares - instead of trying to avoid malpractice. So, he ended up with leg bypass surgery, and 6 of his toes amputated.. which is really amazing considering. It took his right foot until this January to heal, and now he's getting diabetic ulcers on this fingers. He has already been told that the solution to the pain he's in is amputation... however, he didn't like that answer. So, he went back to his orthopedic surgeon who has ordered hyperbaric treatments & put him on a medicine that is suppose to open his blood vessels to allow more blood to his fingers. To me, his fingers look very similar to what his toes looked like 2 years ago. Sad He just completed 14 straight days of treatments, and who knows how many more he'll do. I've also been told that its unusual for diabetics to get this far. Usually their organs give out before the ulcers show up on the hands/fingers. So, I know the end is near... just how near is the question. He's just not ready to give up yet. He's only 69 - but yet he looks so much older. & yeah, this is the person I learned "never give up" from.
Hi All, I've got two web windows open so I can reply to the new thread and not forget about the old posts. Evryday, welcome and tell us about yourself. Mike, a mountain bike shouldnt be too bad on your back. I road bike could strain it a bit since you are in a bent over position while riding. I have a feeling you didnt lose too much cardio fitness during your running break. Start out with the bike, gym equipment, slow runs. I think you will be back up to speed shortly. Linda, 50 crunches?! I think I could do 5 maybe. How does your abs feel when you are done? I am seeing my doctor tomorrow for the exercise induced asthma I believe I have. I get it every time I exercise outside in the cold air. Bad too. Sometimes I can barely get air in. My old friend and first running partner (remember last winter) and I went to a Celtics game last week. We ran up 5 flights of stairs to get to the car. I was struggling to get air in when we got there. I doesnt happen when I exercise in warm air. Theresa, congrats on your PR. Your son is amazing. Do you read runners world? It has articles nearly every month about how to get your speed up for a race. Long and slow is good but you have to add speed workouts if you want to race well. Heres a sample of what Kim and I do. We run about 2 trails miles in a park. When we get to the soccer fields we do this speed drill... ...Run the perimeter of the field 4 times. First lap sprint one leg of it, jog 3, 2nd lap sprint 2 legs, jog 2, 3rd lap sprint 3 legs, 4th lap spring the whole thing. Then we get back onto the trails and resume our trail run. Bob, youre a giver not a taker. hehe. You offered advice to nearly the whole board but only gave a short sentence about how you are doing. My kids and I have Apr 21st off, which is my only day off that week since I have overtime. I was considering taking them to the marathon. Do you want a few more fans there? It would be weather permitting though as you know Boston can be iffy. Kim was one of the few that sliced through the wind. How she does it, I have no idea. The wind killed me. I managed to do 30 mins of treadmill last night. Ugh. Some treadmills differ than others. I was on this one that had slats in the conveyor part. It was hard to run on it and my perceived effort was difficult. Then I moved over to one with a regular soft conveyor and run with ease on it. Eliz, hang in there. Kayaking time is just around the corner. I am looking for a kayak to buy now. Kim and I might get up the nerve to do the Deerfield river this year. Laurie (still frozen in new england)

Shamrock marathon March 2016. Burlington full or relay if I can find a partner May 2016. Wine and Dine half Nov. And a tri or two thrown in just for the hell of it.

Laurie - uhh, yeah they were burning.. Cold dry air is really bad for me, that's why I'm confined to the treadmill right now. You would probably benefit from an albuterol inhaler, you could use it before you run & it'd help you breathe better. Also, for exercised induced asthma, warming up is crucial & cooling down too. My doc told me last week that I should be warming up 20-30 minutes... the last couple of days I did 15 minutes warmup. The way I warmup is like this: I start out slow walking increasing the speed as my breathing improves - then when I feel ready, I run. That might help too. Let us know what the doc says. This morning I went to the gym & did my 3/3 walk run for the start of the 2nd week. Well, it didn't go so well... but I think peakflows were low this morning in hindsight.. I was struggling with bronchiospasms in the running parts, & needed to us my meds when I got home. But, this is how the doc has instructed me to handle things. So, its ok. Next time will be better.

        One day at a time

Thanks, Rindaroo and Laurie! Laurie, I will try your speed workout once we have a clear track or field here in Maine! Our mail is still not being delivered because our road is so icy. I managed 4.1 miles Monday and about 4.5 miles yesterday (my Garmin wouldn't pick up the satellite signal for the first time since I've had it! Bummer.). Rest day today - good thing since we're going to get more snow and rain! Have a great day! Teresa
Hey kids! Went to the doc, who agreed that it was AT, and gave me a referral for physical therapy. Unfortunately, with my insurance, I have to use a facility that is inconveniently located about 40 minutes away. With this being Holy Week, this isn't going to happen this week. But I'll call tomorrow and make an appt. Doc also x-rayed my ankle, for no reason, really, but wanted to rule out any bone problem. Meanwhile, Bob, thanks so much for the link. That is exactly the exercise that I printed out and lost a while back. I'm going to start this today. I do believe it can't hurt and sounds like it's likely to help. My AT can't be too bad, compared to those in the article who experienced some pretty intense pain while running. Bob, Boston - ! My sister lives there and loves to watch the marathon every year. She's a runner, but more in the 5 mile range. But she so loves the marathon, and has a dear friend who's a fabulous marathoner. Someday I'll go to cheer you all on. Theresa, congrat's on your race and PR!!! Did you post a race report? You should if you haven't. You'll get some wonderful feedback. Smile Laurie and Theresa, can't believe that New England weather! You know I'm from Massachusetts, and went to college in NH. Then lived in Chicagoland for 15 years, now no. VA. I'm not missing those interminable winters. Cool Debbie, just give us a little hello so we know you're still with us. Smile Mike, Kevin, Eliz, Roberta, Evry, hope all is well. Linda, I'm so sorry about your dad. He's not a quitter. I'll say a prayer for him. I caught a cold from my children so I'm being very lazy today. Just printed out a recipe for accordion potatoes that I'll make with our Easter ham. I saw the recipe in a magazine while waiting in the doctor's office and found it online. It looks delicious. Here's a link: http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/recipefinder/accordion-potatoes-ghk1207 We'll also have our traditional hot cross buns (from scratch) and home-made cheesecake that contains a bit of lemon rind, really delicious. Can you tell I haven't had a lot of dessert this lent? Stashed in the garage are 7 Dove chocolate bunnies, robin's eggs, peeps, etc. But what I'm really looking forward to is some ice cream. Jem
I'm an idiot! I just posted an even lengthier than usual post on the old thread before I even noticed this one. Clearly, I'm not as rested as I thought, even after five days away from school. I think the only remedy is to spend the rest of this evening drinking wine and watching cheesy re-runs on TV. I'll catch up with everyone when I have completely found my mind again. Eliz

Eliz, I found your other post and wanted to answer this while I have my turn here at the computer - lots of competition from the kids. This chair never cools off. I really do like my nordictrack. You could probably get one at a garage sale or on freecycle or Craig's list. I've had mine for a long time. It is a simple machine and will probably never wear out. You can get a really good upper and lower body workout with it. Also, it's lightweight and easy to move around, unlike a treadmill. This, along with walking, is what I did for cardio for about a year before I started running. I was strong enough from that that I transitioned into running pretty smoothly. But I can't use the NT without music to propel me along. It has to be up-tempo to keep me going. ETA: NIce 5 mile run!! Jem
Teresa - they're not delivering your mail?!? What happened to "neither rain, nor snow, . . . . . .?" It's cool to think, every time you mention Route 1 in a post, that I live about 4 miles from the same Route 1. Of course, when I go north on Route 1 to go to work every day, I'd much rather be going south - all the way to the Florida Keys! (I have a photo of a sign for Route 1 in Key West on my desk at work.) Or maybe north all the way to Maine again some day, but definitely not until summer! Eliz

Just a quick reply. Eliz, I am too lazy to find your long post. Can you find it and paste it here. I too would much rather be on route 1 in Florida! Saw the primary care physician today. He agreed that I have exercise induced asthma and gave me an inhaler like Ali's. 2 miles fast on the treadmill. Boring. Rain all miserable day in new england. Yuck! I need to get outside to run! Argh! Theresa, how do you stand it up there? Laurie

test post. Trying to get the pic of Kim and me to work.

                        One more test. sorry guys.

                        Trails are hard!

Laurie, guess testing works Wink finishing up a short trip to Apex, NC for yet another plant survey. this one was a lot simpler, so ended up only one day. it will take up most of the day to get home tomorrow anyway. I'll have some serious work to do to get rid of the eating I did today. Lunch was at a little seafood place and had a fish "sandwich" in which the piece of fish was twice the size of the bun! of course it came with hushpuppies and coleslaw and since i didn't want to go hungry, a cup of gumbo. At 7, for unknown reasons i was hungry again, so we went to a barbeque place that the guys at the plant recommended and ate entirely too much once again. the guy that I was with was going to order what i got (BBQ and fried shrimp combo) and wanted to know if they were decent portions. the waitress said "it comes on two plates, think that'll be enough?" it was more than enough by a long shot. I threw away 1/3 of the shrimp and 9 of the 12 hushpuppies. Eliz--I read your post, even if it's on the old thread. that's the glory of having the last post show up. Smile some of us might call that a senior moment, but I don't think you're quite to that age yet. Smile Linda--thanks for the new thread. am I really that picky about long threads? best wishes to you and your dad. sounds really tough to be going through. but that is a serious no giving up attitude. good night to everyone else--time for bed. Kevin

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.

Scary thing is that I seem to be having more and more of them lately. Was blaming it on job stress and lack of sleep. Not sure what my excuse is this week! Guess it's a sign to keep the running mileage up so that those endorphins keep flowing through my system. Eliz

Kevin - I was only teasing. I always am thinking that its time for a new thread just about the time you mention it Smile Laurie - Good luck with the inhaler. Let us know how it goes. I made it to the gym this morning & did much better today - 3/3 run walk & some weights.

All of you seem to be doing well, running outside when the weather cooperates, and getting on with life. I'm "still on the couch" and read your posts to keep me motivated to run again. Actually, I can hardly wait. After a week of foot pain bad enough to stop me from running at all, a trip to the doc and getting 6 days of strong anti-inflammatory meds, strict orders not to run at least one if not two weeks, I still have heel pain. I went back to the doc Thursday, got a different kind of anti-inflammatory med, and now have an appt with a foot specialist. Dr. Scholl's gel pack for heels also isn't working. It's not PF as there's no pain if I stay completely off my foot, and that's what puzzles the doc. Only after being on my foot for 30 minutes or so, does the side of my heel hurt. I'm taking it easy until Monday and will try running again. I enjoyed a year of running and really don't want to be permanently sidelined. Rindaroo - sorry to hear about your dad and his condition. Yes, at 69, he's still young. I'm type 2, age 60, and know that my regular exercise could help slow down complications. Roberta
