Power Outages, Clam Festival 5 Mile Road Race & our 9 Grandkids (Read 244 times)

Wow what a very hectic weekend it was! It all started with a tremendous string of thunderstorms (which are ongoing even today). I had gotten home Friday afternoon and completed my run and was relaxing as my DW was preparing a nice pasta dinner when the phone rang at about 6:30...it was work and they had been slammed and all power was out at the PD as our emergency generator was not up to task. Confused This is something we have been working on and of course with budgets the way they are a new one had been placed on the back burner (front and center now). Anyways to make a long story short I had to drive down to York and didn't get home until about 11:30 Friday night. I couldn't eat dinner that late so I ended up going to bed without supper...I wasn't even bad!! I woke up at about 5:06 Saturday morning and jumped out of bed to prepare to head off to the yarmouth Clam Festival 5 Mile Road Race after meeting with a few friends of course. As I headed out of my nicely air conditioned room and took a look at our little weather station I could see that it was already 70 degrees with 98 % humidity...this didn't bode well for the race. Oh well after arriving at the race we got our bib numbers, chips and shirts and then did a little 1.74 mile warm up and knew right off this was going to be a tough one with the heat and humidity. Fashion Report - Black Aidida running shorts, NYPD Singlet, Asics DS Trainers and my old Garmin Cry - Short and sweet - 33:18 (6:40) not even close to what I was hoping for...10/91 AG - 125/932 OA We had a great gathering after the race at Joel's camp...until the next round of thunderstorms and heavy rain forced us all inside and then we ended up going our separate ways. Sunday my DW & I had planned a nice outing at our house on the river with all the our kids and all nine grandchildren to be there all at once...not an easy task anymore. Well the rain came in the late morning and we were left with 9 kids and 11 adults inside for the day...a little hectic (once again thank God for AC) but very enjoyable. I'll try to post a few photos of the grandchildren: All 9 grankids: Brandon - 5 months Brandon & Ava (she's 10 weeks) Matthew - 2 1/2 Joshua - 3 1/2 Kaylee - 8 Candice - 2 Parker - 8 Shane - 6 Cassidy - 12

What a beautiful family Bob! Great pics. And 6:40's in the heat is nothing to complain about. It's summer you know. Very well done. Spareribs
maine, that was a tough race with the heat and humidity. On top of that, a long day and short night preceding it don't help. At least, the thunderstorms missed the race itself. You sure were speedy by any standards, let alone under the circumstances you had. I enjoyed the pictures of all those good looking grandkids. TomS

Considering the heat & humidity plus the power outages at the dept., lack of dinner, and all the stress you went through, I think your time was fabulous...only 35 seconds off of last year, top 10 in your AG, and no telling how many of the younger runners you polished off. Also loved all the grandkids' pics, especially Brandon flexing. DickyG

Bob, you did very well. We ran Marathon Sports 5 miler on Thursday and the humidity was just as bad, but we were much s-l-o-w-e-r. Great pics of the grandkids. We had a similar gathering last week and really enjoyed having them all here. Congrats and don't let our wierd New England weather get you down.
Fabulous photos and what gorgeous kids! That Brandon looks like he is directing the group! Nice race too given all the frenzy of your weekend and less than ideal temps and humidity. You'll still get your original goal, I am sure of it. You also have almost two cross-country teams with the grandkids. Tell folks to get busy so you can have an even 10. Thanks for the report and sharing all the photos. I am grinning now. Well run race too Smile Karin/CNYrunner
I guess the weather was "Clammy" at the Clam festival 5 miler. Big grin Way to tough it out on a rough weather day. 91 in your AG ! Wow for a 5 miler to boot. Are all your races that big or was this just a popular event? Great job anyway and nice family pics. Larry

Hi Bob, Greta race under tough circumstances, especially when you factor in the night before. You hit 6:40s on a tough day, when I couldn't hit them on my best day! Thanks for the wonderful shots of your beautiful grandkids. You can see each of their personalities in their expressions and their eyes. You're one lucky grandpa! Jay

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

They are adorable! You are indeed blessed... Oh, and great racing in the heat, too... Smile

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

                      One day at a time

Mainerunnah, good job in the heat. If we'd been in town, I would have signed up for the race. Our house is fewer than 4 miles from the start line (we're off of North Road in North Yarmouth), so I run in that area a lot. I've run the course for fun before. I can't believe it was so hot! It was much better where we were, in New York and Ontario. I hope I can run it next year! It probably won't be that hot two years in a row, right?? You have a bunch of beautiful grandchildren! Thanks for posting their photos.
There is actually a summer up there? hahaha. Youre so lucky to have grandkids. I am jealous. Laurie

Shamrock marathon March 2016. Burlington full or relay if I can find a partner May 2016. Wine and Dine half Nov. And a tri or two thrown in just for the hell of it.

Darn weather!!! It does sound like a great race. Your time is very good. Spending time with family is the best!!! Thanks for the RR

Well speedy, save me some food at Portland, should you stick around long enough for the mid-packers to finish! Wow, great race in that heat. I'm partial to the kiddo in the red shirt Cool. grins, A ps: I'm so envious--you have enough family to have a baseball game between yourselves, well, in a few years when those short ones can make it to the plate.....
