Age at First Marathon (Read 491 times)

One day at a time

I thought it would be interesting to see how old folks were when they ran their first marathon. Now that I'm training for my first half marathon in September, I am surprised to find the thought of running a full marathon keeps popping up! Then I think, shoot, I'm a 45-year-old turtle, am I crazy? DH thinks I'm stretching things just to do a half! Thanks in advance! Teresa
My first marathon was in the fall of 2003, at age 49. I qualified for Boston and ran it just after my 50th. Tell the DH Tongue (with a grin) from me! Big grin Big grin Big grin, Amy

I started running when I was 47, and ran my first marathon when I was 48. It took me almost 5 1/2 hours! I am now 54, and trainning for my 13th. The past couple of years they have all been BQ's. So you are not crazy! You are never too old or too slow to start running marathons!

I ran my first and only at 46. I forecast many more in my future....
I ran my first and only marathon at age 62. It wasn't fast, 4:45, but I did it. I'm not sure exactly when I started running, but it was in my mid 50s with my first race (5K) at age 56. Teresa, it looks like you can dismiss your youthful 45 as a reason to not consider a marathon. Good luck. TomS
First marathon in 2005 at age 49. BQ'd on #5 (finally) last fall. You're no more crazy than the rest of us!

I ran my first and only marathon last year at age 44. I won't be running another until at least next year, but I will eventually do it again. Someday I just have to get to Boston.

                      Not at it at all.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

Ran my first marathon (New York) in '92 when I was 31. I ran that in 3:38, and now, at the lovely age of 47 and 12 marathons later (none of them faster than the first), I'm hoping to beat that before long. Maybe. We'll see. No guarantees. Longshot. Evil grin
