I don't like headlamps, either.  Like Aamos, I sometimes carry a small flashlight and use it at will.  Many of the streets I run on have streetlights, but the pools of darkness in between could use some extra lighting.  However, on those rare occasions when I get up early enough to get out on the bike path in the dark, a headlamp is good to have.  I like those knuckle lights, though - that looks like a preferable option.
