Masters Running

4 miles for me today. No long run, but I did include a hill of about 1/2 mile in length going up 150 feet in elevation, no idea what the incline was. It approximates the big hill in the May 12K though, so I thought it would be good practice. It actually felt more comfortable than running on the flat and  I  thought about adding on a mile or 2, but at the end of 4 my  hamstrings were just so tight that I thought it wiser to keep it short. I spent a lot of time massaging them before and after running.

Supposed to be a long run for me today.  As you will notice, it is now almost noon and I have not yet made it out of the house.  For several reasons.  we are in the midst of a very impressive Nor'easter.  Max the dog doesn't like big storms.  Max needed comforting during the night.  Lost an hour to DST.  Spent the day at Mom's house doing computer training and then drove home 2 hours in said Nor'easter.  Woke up after 11am new time and then got sucked into the computer for longer than I should have.  So I need to gather my gear and head out.  Pretty sure it will be to the gym.  Driving rain and 40º just doesn't cut it for me.

      back later.

Happy--smart choice.  do you have a foam roller?  works nicely on my tight hammies and calves.

Next?  Could there be 26.2 somewhere???

      I can dream, can't I?

Hi Kev! I've been sucked into computerland for the last TWO hours. *&!&%#!  I'm now going to follow your lead and go running.  I do have a foam roller and assorted massage tools and put them to good use yesterday - need to do that more. I read someone's tip about warming up the muscles with heat before the warmup exercises and then running. So I'm on a heating pad now and we'll see if that helps too. You had quite the night. Poor Max - he's lucky to have you. Enjoy your run!

Hey all!  Good news,  I ran 2 miles on the treadmill today with no twinges or pain in the AT area.  Calf & Hammy still tight in that leg, but loose enough to let me run a bit.  Thought I'd stop at 2 to slowly get back there.. no regrets about missing the race.  It was the smart thing to do. Amazing I could realize that though. Wink

Foam Roller?  I have this wannabe Stick - called the Tiger Tail and oy! it felt like it made the muscles worse.. or maybe it did loosen them up and they were just really, really bad?  I don't know.  I am going to get in a stretching routine for sure.

I made it to the gym not long after my last post.  actually had a decent workout.  2.75 miles on the TM in 32:00 including wu/cd.  then 4 sets of arm exercises.  15 minutes on the eliptiacl and then another 4 sets of arms.   feel a little sore at the moment.

Next?  Could there be 26.2 somewhere???

            I can dream, can't I?

              Good afternoon everyone,

Kevin, I keep thinking that I need to find a gym to go to.  I'm glad that it seems to be working out for you.  I know what you mean about getting sucked into the computer.  When I moved to Tennessee, I decided not to get cable so that i won't get sucked into the TV.  However, now I get sucked into the computer instead.  I don't know which is worse.

HappyFeat, I agree that it was probably wiser to keep your run short rather than risk injuring yourself.

I don't have any roller toys.

Yesterday I hiked the trail that I'll be running in two weeks for my first ever trail race.  I guess I'm a little paranoid that I'll get lost, that there will be a huge hill that I won't be ready for, that I'll just plain suck . . . It's a little over 3 miles out and then doubles back on itself to the finish.  One things for sure, even if I suck really bad, I'll have some breathtaking views of the Tennessee river gorge.

3 miles for me this morning. (Yes, only 3 miles).  There was a train blocking (stopped across) every rail crossing in town this morning

              Cheers,

              Mike

What! no roller toys at all, Mike?? I guess that says something good for you in that you must not need them. I've always had a problem with tight muscles and it seems like whenever I work out or run more, they get lots of knots in them. So I've accumulated a variety of balls and rollers. The problem is that it's actually an UNpleasant activity because it hurts and so I don't do it as much as I should to keep problems at bay. I'm turning over a new leaf though and hope to see a difference soon.

For anyone else who might be interested in this same endeavor, on Saturday I discovered a YouTube video series with "follow-along" videos for athletes to work on your legs, etc. I spent most of Saturday morning doing the videos. It was great because it got me to DO it. The website is   http://www.selfmassageforathletes.com/Videos.html and I recommend taking a look at it. His main prop is a tennis ball and a chair - very user friendly.

Mike, you'll do GREAT in your trail race and you'll LOVE it!

Quick check in here. I raced my SO across a store parking lot and reinjured the leg. Been in pain since Sat. Stupid thing to do. Ah $hit. No runs or workouts since. But I did get a 4 hour hike in yesterday at night. Guess that counts for something. Got chased uphill in the dark by a skunk.

                  Good luck racers!

So how was the hiking? Any soreness with that?

Linda, yay!!!   how are you now?

Laurie, oh that stinks.   wish we could get anti-stupid shots.  well, how are you now?

                      Mike, good luck!!!

Happyfeat what a great link, thanks!

I am in favor of roller toys.

Hi Kevin pick another race yet?    looks like I won't make it this Sunday, don't you think?  so I'm looking too.

6 miles this morning.  did a few striders & seemed to be ok with them so that makes me happy.

I hope not being ready for race day doesnt become the norm around here.

                        Deb, Roller toys?

Leg is better. Stupidity gone. Well at least for now. Hardwood floor project almost done. Looks like I am going to go back to being a runner on Monday. Wish me luck.

                        Happy runs everyone.

                        Manchester Road Race in November.

Well it's Saturday morning and I'm supposed to be getting ready to go running with 3 other women in less an hour! I'm kinda nervous about it because I'm afraid they will all be faster than me or that I'll have some kind of problem. One (who I already know slightly) invited me to join her and 2 of her friends (that I've never met) this morning. The plan is to run for an hour and a half.  It's been a few weeks since I ran that long and I'll need to take it slow.  I've always been a lone runner, but have been wishing for some kind of company for some of my runs, so this is exciting too. It could be the start of something wonderful - IF it goes well.

Happy Feat - good luck on the run with the others Smile  I'm a lone runner too..   I worry about going slow compared to others, and not hurting myself.

I feel like a slug Sad  I think allergies have been kicking my rear this week.. and/or DST.  I have not run at all, was so tired this week after work, couldn't wake up early either.  So dropped off my scripts from the allergy doc yesterday, will pick up today.  Maybe if these headaches go away, won't be so tired and will feel like running.   I really want to run!! lol  plus have a 5K in 3 weeks, so better get busy.  Not sure where I'm at after a couple of weeks or so of rest.

DST has really brought me down this past week too, Linda. I was so looking forward to the extra daylight after work, but I've been too tired by then to really enjoy it. Barely get to work on time; then spend all afternoon yawning. Hope we get adjusted soon.

My group run went really well and I enjoyed it alot. Turned out to be just 2 others - one who I already know (and she's a fast runner) and the other who turns out to run my current speed. We did 7 miles at about 11 mpm and chatted most of the way. The weather and the scenery were gorgeous.

My left ham is still limiting me a little; but if I keep it slow and focus on using my glutes more, the ham eases. I think I've that lately I haven't been using my glutes like I should  and so my hamstrings and low back have been overloaded.  I'm trying to correct that and boy are my butt muscles tired and wimpy. I'm encouraged by the improvement so far though.

Laurie, I'm relieved to hear you recovered so quickly. Hope you have a good run on Monday.

I've slacked off on my weight work-outs. I need to follow Kevin's lead again and get back to it. I think today's the day.

HF - good to hear the run went well!

I finally did it!  got out there and ran Smile  Did 3 mile in the sprinkling rain this morning & it felt great.. well the hammy & calf on my right leg still pretty tight.  So, I did sttretches after.  Maybe part of it this week was really my subconcious telling me I wasn't ready...  okay so I'm going with that! lol
