New skirt in town

OM, I'm so glad you made a decision you are happy with!  I'm sorry that there was so much waffling and your emotions must be whiplashed at this point!  I'll be thinking of you next week!

So far, I like what Ribs has said the best.

I do wonder though, how holding the marathon would have detracted from any relief efforts, and not just broiught more people into the area to donate money and time to help.  So, basically, I think they should have gone ahead with the marathon, but asked runners to help in some way, whether through monetary donations or actual work.  I know runners would have accepted that honour.  But now there will be nothing.

Did a nice 5 mile run, breaking my sloth-streak I had going of not running since Sunday.  It felt good.  One of only a few times too in several weeks that it wasn't raining, an extra bonus.

        tires aired up fine,

every thing works............................now, if I just don't kill myself on it.

Trying to talk myself out the door...still blowing like a banshee from the frigid north at 15 gusting 25, though at 20 degrees I should be able to handle that if I can just get my hind end out the door (and presumably the rest of me as well...).

They were bringing in generators into Central Park to power the timing clocks and other equipment. Send those generators to Staten Island where people still have no power. That's enough of an example of how the priorities have not been set straight this week.

Last I heard, a grass-roots "run anyway" marathon will be held in Central Park tomorrow: run 4 loops of the Park to make the 26.2 miles, then donate to the Mayor's Relief Fund. Being in NJ, my running club will be doing something similar. We have a group run scheduled tomorrow morning, various distances and paces to accommodate all who are interested, and then we can all make personal donations, either monetary or clothing and supplies needed for the storm victims. And the buzz I'm seeing on FB is that runs like this are popping up everywhere. The NYC Marathon course was to go right through the disaster areas affected by the storm. Run somewhere else, ANYWHERE else, that's totally fine.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and support.

I think the decision to cancel the marathon was the right one. Just wish it would have come sooner.
OM, I'm glad to hear you have adjusted your plans and very glad to hear about the support and relief runs popping up everywhere.

About 5 miles for me on the hills.
Our friends' band is playing at a bar tonight but I don't feel like going alone (DH took off for Switzerland and Germany), so I'm going to stay home and read and sew and maybe get my foil out for practice.

Sorry, I don't buy this, that bringing in a few generators would have had an effect on the relief efforts already underway.

I perceive cancelling the marathon as an emotional decision, more than anything else, and that is totally the right thing to do, if it is what the people of NYC want.

Somehow I posted and lost this, so trying again....

So with a half tomorrow I thought I would go out to the park and walk a mile and run a mile, with some pickups thrown in, but when I got there I saw they were holding a race, so I jumped in to volunteer.  Manned a turnaround on the course and got to run a half mile or so with a woman I know from local races.  So I had fun, got my work in and got to volunteer.

I think this is wonderful, how you jump right in to help.  I need to volunteer more often...

Perhaps I could text you a viagra ad, just to make you feel better....Wink

C-R - great job pacing a friend to a PR!

I didn't end up getting in any workout today.  Took DD to buy a winter coat and stop at the grocery, and seems like cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus washing dishes and kitchen clean up took my whole day....Roll eyes...now I will take down the Halloween decorations and perhaps drag out the bins that hold the Christmas stuff, just to get them out from under the stairs.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

opie, I was glad to read your job report the othe day.  OM, it's a bummer about NYC cancellation messing with your plans but you have a good plan.  I trust it will work out well for you.  My thoughts continue to be with the people who are suffering as a result of the storm.  C-R, nice half, helping your friend break 2 hours.  Woods Lady, it's good to hear from you and know you are recovering from your back problems.

Nice long runs for holly and Dave.

This morning, I did a small, local, 5K Turkey Trot.  I hoped to run a little faster than I did, but it was what it was.  My time was just over 29 minutes for a 9:06 pace (according to my Garmin).  I was 2/2 in my AG (60+) and think I was 11/15 OA.  A mile warmup and .9 mile cool down gave me 5 miles for the day.  After the 5K, there was a 2K family fun run/walk.  At the end, there was a sprint for the first place position between the 70 year old who won my AG in the 5K and a young boy about 10 years old.  The 70 year old just squeaked out the kid but he was sure sucking wind.  I know the 70 year old from other races and know the kid and his family from church and around our little community.  It was a neat finish to see.

A good day and good runs for all.

OM - I'm so sorry.  It was too late to know but there were some 40 gratis entries left over in today's In Unity We Run Marathon that has been held annally to commemorate the otherwise doomed 2001 NYC MArathon.  It was very special today though.  A nmber of my fellow members of the Japan 100-Marathon Joyful Running Club are in NYC too.  They're used to weather cancellations from typhoons and tsunami too.

FYI, the RD of the Light-in-the-end-of-the-Tunnel MArathon next July has okayed me giving you a gratis entry if you can figure out a way to get ot here for what-will-be Mariposai's super reunion with her family and as many of us as possible.

ps - it's flat through a two mile tunnel at Snoqalmie Pass followed by a 2% grade down to the valley floor finish line. Too late for this year but 2011 was mari's BQ and for dozens of other runners too.

                      .

Although I didn't break six hours today, I'm kind elateded about our NYC commemorative run as it was almost four hours faster than the marathon distance took in last week's Carkeek 12-hour Run. Carkeek's advertized as the "toughest 12 hour out there. PERIOD!"  I believe it.

plus I saw dove.  She looks like she's waltzing she's such a smooth runner, and having so much fun too.

No wonder I love running so much.

plus, plus - unlike last week's rainathon, it didn't rain a drop.   yippee.

So nice to read about everyone. Dropped in to see how everyone is. Miss you guys and the camarederie of posting everyday. My health is so-so therefore my running is very limited. Life has had it's ups and downs for me, but I am again firmly in control (-:ry

I will try to post every once in a while when I get out for a little run.

Good luck OM - definitely lemonade!

Our 65+ running club had its annual 5K today.  we gave out the shirts and it was fun to see all the families running.  I was surprised that most of the kids wanted a kid-sized shirt and not a larger one - our grandkids only like XL!  We both did ok - I was about 30 seconds slower then last yr and henrun had one of his better runs this year - far better than his race 4 months ago.  They also gave out age-graded results to the top 12 men & women.  the top woman is 68 and ran a 21 minute race and the top male also ran a 21 minute race, at the young age of 75.  these two are my heroes!

kudos to all the runners and racers today and happy biking to tw

Good job marj. And those are some amazing heroes!

It is so great to see Tallrunner here! Do post when able even when you are not running.

Tetsujin, you lucky guy. Got to run a marathon and saw Dove!

Well, after a lazy morning I joined my DH on his volunteer work up the ski hill. The plan was for him to do some silviculturist work and me run trails, but the weather was just awful that it did not allow him to do any work.  Very foggy, and low visibility... that we decided to drive back to lower ground for me to run my beloved trails. DH joined me for a run and he actually ran 8 miles with me Surprised. His longest training run in history! We both had a great time. Since my plan was to run 12, he dropped me off a few miles from home and I ran back home for a 13 miler for the day.

Then I came home and cooked some TLC food: paraguayan food. Life is grand!!!

Is Erika in Seattle now? Praying for your papa as he goes thru his surgery!

Ohh, btw, I did get a text from Hally today. She is doing well. Still at a friend's house, but well.

                              Jlynne, how are you?

Enkephalin, glad to see you went out for a 5 miler sans rain! When will your DH start his new job?

a turkey trot already Tselbs? wow, that's early! nice pace on your 5K!

I, too, wished they would have made the decision to cancel sooner than they did to avoid the inconvenience and $$ loss to so many, but I think it was the right decision. it was becoming too much of a hot divisive issue.  and with other sport events being changed - like NFL - i guess it just seemed wrong to run a marathon in or near areas were there was still much work to be done. not that NOT holding it is going to change much in the course of the day, but I think it's the message that it sends that's bad timing.   But I think it was the visual of these large generators, just sitting there for the marathon, that bothered me the most. I don't know the power of these generators, but I do believe they are ones that would generate enough power for several homes, not just one or two - but more like a whole street. that is what bothered me - that these generators could supply power to several homes but were being reserved for a sporting event. I can only imagine how I would feel if I was a staten island resident with no power, cold, trying to just get by with as little as possible, and there was a whole extracurricular event taking place with all the amenities that something of that magnitude requires. yeah, i'd be a bit peeved. it's just one of those no win-no win situations really.

attended an all day gardening symposium today. some good info, some useless info in the seminars I got in to. I am energized and motivated to get my greenhouse built so I can start my garden in March. I have lots of good info on making my blueberry bushes better and more prolific. learned about a few things i'm doing wrong. and i'm frustrated with how GMO's have permeated our lives and how there's little we can realistically do to change or reverse damage that's been done.  But I'll focus on what I can do and that is growing as much organic food as I can, preserving it, try to grow more year round and reduce our reliance on commercially grown foods.

tomorrow will be a long run for me. I'll take each dog for a run and then get in some extra miles on my own to get in a 10 mile run.
