Masters Running

Did my first long run (11 miles) since my last half m. on March 30th. Teresa-not an uncommon problem as everyone has stated. Running increases peristalsis of the intestine.
Congratulations on a nice long run Henry! Okay. Now I am concerned. You see, I don't think runners should have to stop running to defecate. I KNOW that many runners do, uh, doo-doo. But I am unsure about running necessarily increasing peristalsis. And here is my train of thought: I say running puts me in a "fight or flight" sequence. This reaction should increase epinephrine, dilate the pupils, decrease the non-vital systems function. Remember? If that saber tooth tiger is going to attack, you want to bolt so your body sends blood/oxygen to the systems that are going to move you away from the tiger fast. If your stomach is digesting and your colon is moving things along, you are going to run slower and be lunch soon. But, with "fight or flight" reaction, the cardio and pulmonary systems get the good stuff and you can run away. Maybe runners with BM problems are just too relaxed? (snork). Maybe I am too uptight? (if you know me, you'll know that's not true) Maybe I am less evolved? (Okay, that could be) I think coffee is a laxative and if you drink coffee before a run, that will trump the "fight or flight" response. I guess that's the dietary change I would try. This is just my way of thinking. I have no idea if any scientific experiments have been done to prove or disprove my theory. Now I am going to go run because I have already... taken care of business. (Hey! I mean I got all my work done and I off the clock!)

    Marathon Iowa 2014

So last night, Long-Suffering Mrs. PBJ and I went on a date. We met at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut to go to the Van Halen concert. First we had dinner at Big Bubba’s BBQ (the entrée that we split, called the BBQ sampler, had so much food that we both filled ourselves, made a leftover lunch with the pulled pork and beef, and still had a ½ chicken and a rack of ribs for tonight’s dinner). Then it was off to the show. And what a show - it was loud, bright and awesome. Funny thing though, they didn’t play any songs newer than 1984. David Lee Roth was as egocentric as ever (and buff), and Eddie Van Halen looked great. He seems to be clean. We stayed overnight, and were upgraded from a regular room to a suite (no extra charge – a sweet suite). I woke up kinda late this morning – 5 am. I was going to use the workout facility, but they wanted $15 dollars for guest to use the exercise equipment, so I went for a morning run instead. I passed a slow guy with headphones on, and started running up Mohegan Boulevard. A security guy in an SUV pulled over and told me I couldn’t run on that road. He asked me to get in his vehicle. So I did. Then the headphone guy came jogging up, and the security guy asked him to get in. “I have to run for a half an hour.” Headphone guy pleaded, “I can’t stop. Besides, I’m with WFAN, the radio station broadcasting from here.” All the while, he was jogging in place. “Okay, then you can go run in the parking garage.” Headphone guy agreed, and off he went. Then security guy asked me if I wanted to run in the garage. “There’s hills.” “No thanks, I like to run outside. Just drop me off somewhere I can run.” So security guy drove me to the Henny Penny gas station on Route 32 and said, “you can run here.” Route 32 is a four lane major roadway with no sidewalks, minimal breakdown lanes, and a 50 mph speed limit. But it’s not on the Reservation, so it’s cool to run there. Whatever you say, Mr. security guy. I guess that casinos don’t really cater to people trying to stay physically fit on the cheap. Well life is short...so tell me where the next boomer race meeting is and I will get there. East or west, south or north, overseas perhaps? Gotta plan ahead. Tall

I'm in the "didn't sleep well last night" group today as well. Didn't stretch as much as I should have last night after running and didn't shower soon enough (put wash in, duh, so had to wait until it was finished), so I was reallly stiff and chilly by the time I got in the tub. Really thought I had done something disastrous to my right ankle - it woke me up a few times last night and I could barely put weight on it this morning. Feeling better now, but still not exactly right. So I'm skipping running tonight for some serious stretching and stability ball work, and in order to get organized for performances/field trips on Thursday and Friday and start to pack for the weekend. I won't get home from school until around 9 p.m. on Friday, so I want to be ready to head to the shore as soon as I get up on Saturday. I've been secretly gloating over the fact that I can access RA at work, and now we've got "naked running" and a lengthy discussion on bodily functions in the same thread! Something tells me the powers that be at school aren't going to be too keen on that. Teresa - awesome job on the 11 miles! How cool is this - I'm doing VRAA over on Kick, I'm a team captain, and Ileneforward is on my team. Smile Eliz

The Enlyten strips are fairly similar to Succeed caps. But each strip is a MUCH smaller dose. I think that helps as it lets you fine tune while you are running how much you take. In the end though it is essentially a different delivery method. Not only do you not have to take them with water, you should probably take them after you have water. The way you take them is by pulling out some strips from a cartridge, sticking them between your cheek and gum where they dissolve while you run. For a long run I will put two to four strips in my mouth at the start and then more every few miles. They typically take about two or three miles to dissolve. The tick to using them during a race is to not worry about how many you happen to pull out. Each one is a relatively small dose of electrolytes anyway. So popping one, two or four at the same time is not that big a deal. I generally try to yank out at least two at a time.

I am thinking of running the Ironhorse Half Marathon in Simsbury which is a week from Sunday to get a race in under my belt.
Great race. Flat, fast. Well run. Little crowd support... I ran the inaugural 10K last year-said 'Hi' to the 1/2marathoners as we were finishing and they were doing the next loop. I say, go to the race if you can. http://www.coolrunning.com/results/07/ct/Jun3_IronHo_set1.shtml good luck!
Everyone's running so well, or so it seems! I had 6.1 in 52, an 8:37 pace under cloudy skies. Really behind here--reading to stay in touch--I like the idea of future reunion runs! grins, A ps: IT was Tennessee Ernie Ford who used to say "if the Good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise" as to the probability of future events. Add me to the non sleepers.... is it the full moon? End of the year awards ceremonies have kept me busy since Friday! SeeBoyGo and SeeGirlGo are nerdy kids who love school and all of the activities that go along with it...from Student Council to Science Olympiads, TSA and Art. Both kids received a number of awards. Proud Mom moments. SeeBoyGo is now done with middle school and has started high school baseball already. He likes to jump in right away and get to meet everyone. The baseball field has a great trail behind it - I will go run 3 or 4 miles when I pick him up tonight! It is 90 degrees again today - ugh! Way too early for that kind of heat. This weekend is the Bolder Boulder - a zillion people, but lots of fun...hmmmmmmm should I or shouldn't I? Choices choices choices.

Nice placement in the Ironhorse last year dtoce! Look at the link folks! The half-marathon course is mostly flat except for a pretty decent climb at mile 3 or 4 (good 4-5 minutes of uphill) if I remember correctly. You get a nice downhill afterwards and there is also flat paved bike path running in there---just don't be surprised about the hill if you do run it Twocat. I agree as well that it's well organized and lots of fun. CNYrunner
Good running out there. Haller, is that you running a marathon this weekend....good luck. Tall, good luck to you to...leavin' it all out there, no doubt. And to all the other racers this weekend....good racing! Teresa, nice work on your 11 miler. 6 rather easy and warm miles @10:09 pace and 88F. Easy as in slow, but the effort did not feel that easy. I think I'm not aclimated to the heat yet.

1705 IRC 4 good miles followed by a trip to the rec. center with the two older children (the youngest had track practice and the r.s. went out for a bike ride) Did 30 minutes on the bike to nowhere followed by benchpresses and other weight related activity. It would have been a pretty successful day had not lilmissrosie and the manchild tricked me into ordering pizza... and I had THREE pieces. Back to square one.

seemomgo--I love nerdy kids! There was a kids' mile run the day before my race Sunday, when I was at the packet pick up and there was this little guy, about 4, I'd say, in glasses, and just plugging along with a steady pace, focused straight ahead, and I just couldn't stop watching him. So adorable! ran again tonight with my running club, another 6 miles. First 3 slow, last 3 faster (kinda 27 first 3, 24 last 3). Several folks ran Fargo, so we all compared notes. Say, maybe we should pick a race in 2009, enough ahead of schedule so everyone can try and make it there? I'd so love to have a race where as many of us as possible were there! What about fall of '09--that gives us all enough time to train, save, plan, etc. goodnight my chums! A

Hey chum, I think you have a great idea. I am in for a fall 09 get-together. Maybe we can choose a central location to ensure the highest number of boomer's participation. Naked (no gizmos and gadgets) 7 recovering miles in a perfect late afternoon. The moon is promising to be gorgeous tonight. I wish I could get out and run tonight, but I have to be at work early tomorrow morning so I should stay put in my bed and sleep.
