Hey all! Debbie - to answer your question - it had to get worse before it got better. I had a complete meltdown yesterday... called my husband crying on the phone on my lunch hour. So, I guess it turns out I was completely overwhelmed by life - made a pan of brownies last night & really thought about eating the whole thing Shocked but I didn't.... had 3 or 4.. totally needed the chocolate fix. But then I realized how close I'm coming to just forgetting about the weight I lost... have only gained 3 pounds the last 3 months of basically no exercise (well a little, but not very much)... I've come so far & don't want that to happen, so I went to the gym today. Yes you heard me right - not my treadmill at home, I actually went to the gym!! So... no I didn't go swimming... I got on the treadmill, put it on 20 minutes fat burn mode & slowly increased the walking as the breathing allowed. I actually ended up walking at 3.8 - which the bronchials haven't allowed for a couple of years - or maybe 3 since the asthma started. So.... guess I really was paying attention to the body & the bronchs have been getting better - yay! 5 minute cooldown on the TM (25 minutes & 1.3 miles total). Then, I actually did the weight machines!! Something I've been threatening for months & actually did it today Smile woohoo! Jem - as Debbie well knows & me too - its that pushing it thing thats the problem for both of us... huh, Debbie? Good for DD! Just walking in the door is so scary.. I remember the first time I did that, its so hard.. hope she gets on the TM soon. Okay gotta go pick up DD at a bday party! cyl

I've been reading everyone's posts, cheering all of you on, all the while sitting on the couch for the last couple of weeks "thinking" about getting on the treadmill again. It's been too cold here to run outside, neighborhood roads are slick and icy, and the treadmill has gotten boring. ANYway, today for breakfast I met some former colleagues at a local restaurant (I'm a retired teacher), and they asked me if I were still running. Slick as anything, I smiled and said "mostly" and added that I've also signed up for the 5K part of the Indy mini-marathon (which is true). Wow - they were impressed and since it's televised here, they said they'd watch for me. I told them to watch the END of the race as that's where I'll be running. Wink So, my "confession" to friends has re-motivated me and I'll run almost daily now, even outside when it gets a tad warmer. And telling all of you holds me accountable too. Huffing and puffing, Roberta

lswife, what a nice post! There's nothing like putting your goals out there for everyone to hear about to make yourself accountable. May I make a suggestion? Log your training here, and make your log viewable so we can really follow your progress. Smile Good luck!

Roberta, I'm just home from dinner with a group of current colleagues. (I'm still teaching, even though I really want to be retired!) There was much discussion among the young'uns (the 30-somethings) about running Broad Street, a 10-mile race in Philly in May. Before I could self-edit, I went public with my plan to run Broad Street. And big-mouth me, even though I'd had only one glass of wine, couldn't stop there. Noooooo, I had to add that I'm going to run the Atlantic City HM in October. YIKES!!!!! At least one course is a slight downhill all the way and the other is flat! My 2-year "runniversary" is coming up soon, and I've sort of been thinking that it's time to set some new goals. Now I'm off to the Runners' World web site to figure out a training plan. Yes, just another exciting Saturday night . . . . Eliz

I was really sore when I woke up this morning... & I thought I took it easy on the weights Roll eyes so did my yoga dvd - 1 hour this morning... aww feels much better. Roberta - confessions are good for the soul. Glad to hear you're ready to get on the treadmill now Smile
I must have missed something. BTB, did I miss an introduction? Linda, where do you live? Is it location that gives your lungs problems or does it happen everywhere? L'swife, I know you told us once before but where do you live too? Wondering where it is thats cold. Eliz, way to go!Atlantic City sounds like the perfect place to run a HM. Did any of them agree to join you? Mike, could your foot thing be shoe related? Did I ask you this before? Am I losing my mind? Deb, does the eliptical hurt your hamstring more than the treadmill? Eliptical was the only exercise I could do without pain for a long time. Is it the stair stepped eliptical (eliptical on a hill) or the regular flat one that you use? I do use the pull bouy. Its the only way I can swim without pain. Jem, Sounds like you are ready to start training for the HM. Just pick one and go for it. Sounds simple huh. I can honestly and straight faced say I am a runner. Today it was absolutely beautiful. A rare thing here in New England in winter. The skies were cloudless and I wanted to be out in it. So I did a very slow 3 mile run around my neighborhood. 30 mins. No walking. Not much pain. Hamstring hurts a little now. Not too bad. I've had worse. I might be ready to start adding miles in a week or so. Wow. It feels so good to run again. Now the bad news. I gained 10 pounds not running. Ugh! And I think I might have asthma. The last 4 or so runs outside have ended with me weezing lacking air. So today I used DD's inhaler and felt great within minutes. Seeing a different PTist in March. Was referred to her since she specializes in feet and is a runner and triathlete. Hopefully she can offer some help on my feet/shoe issue. Laurie

Shamrock marathon March 2016. Burlington full or relay if I can find a partner May 2016. Wine and Dine half Nov. And a tri or two thrown in just for the hell of it.

Jem, now that makes sense. I'd thought you were targeting a fall marathon, & wondered why you were training now for it. slipping a half in there too, huh? Smile. I understand perfectly about your DD. you know, after this hamstring pull, going to a gym was a big deal for me. started by going to look at them. just sort of slid in... I hope it works out for her. yes, I did run. thanks. I'm still doing eod, & just adding a little on each time, but it's really slow. still a walk run mix, increasing the running. not pain free. but I'm working on it, & like you said, sometimes you just have to. sorry I didn't mention 'lore of running' to you before with your achilles. It really bothers me that yours still hurts. According to my swiss cheese memory I don't think that's good. do you think that chronic is just another way of saying get a little better, then get a little worse? I do agree that a tight calf doesn't help. but I hope you can figure this out soon & really get it healed properly. Linda, woohoo!!! well, at least for the gym part. I'm glad the yoga helped. Otherwise, I hope you're feeling a little better. give yourself some tlc. take care of yourself like you would someone else. did somebody say chocolate? uh, yep. you're right about that pushing thing being a problem for us. and a nice tactful reminder, thank you very much. roberta & eliz, good for both of you! I think it's likely you're both going to inspire somebody else to give it a try. Laurie, btb I don't think gave an introduction, but he's a sweetheart of a guy & I'm glad he pops in. btw, he is no newbie! we're going to have to do a brain tap. and we're going to have a clopping coconut race, aren't we btb? re the elliptical, right after I pulled this, I tried one at the first gym I went to & just about gasped out loud. (as in, it really hurt) A couple of weeks later, I was able to use an arc trainer, (have you tried that?)& shortly after that I could use an elliptical pretty well. You're right, thye're usually easier on the hammies than the treadmill. The thing is, the ellipticals at the gym I joined are precors that are not adjustable, so for me it's like they're on a bit of an incline. though I don't think that's what you were describing.. I'm not sure if I know what that is. I used them ok but not comfortably a few times, but I think they (along with pt) were a factor in my getting worse again a couple of months into this. Went from doing them for over an hour to where I couldn't even do 10 minutes without pain. they were supposed to get new ones but hadn't last time I went. how do you like using the pull buoys? I hope you don't have asthma! hope your new PT helps. glad you had a nice run. be careful. hi Mike. What kind of planks are you doing? (besides "fun")
                btb1490

laddoms- I'm sorry for just barging in. I hope you don't mind. I kinda wander around aimlessly and crosspost in different groups. You are a nice bunch of people here, and newbies or not, I like to hang around nice people. As an aside, I'm from NY, and I agree, today was just glorious out, wasn't it? I'm glad you were able to get out and enjoy it! For your asthma, have you heard of Advair? It's more of a preventative maintenance inhaler, taken once a day regardless. Hopefully what you have is just seasonal. dg- I actually had a dream about having a coconut race! How bad is that? For those of you wondering what the heck we're talking about, you have to watch the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. btw dg, what... is your favorite color? Wink
Btb, no of course we dont mind. We like company. I just thought I missed an introduction where back in the old posts. So tell us about yourself. I like the coconut run. Been a huge monty python fan since i was a kid. Even had a silly walk. I collect the movies and saw Spamalot. Too funny. Shall we call it the Holy Grail Trail 5k? Coconuts instead of t shirts? Deb, yes my Y has arc trainers. They look painful. So I avoid them. I guess I am a bit of a chicken. Have you run yet? Or are you just sticking with the gym? I actually swim better with the pull bouy. They make you more bouyant. If you just put it in your legs and forget you have legs then its easier. Does your PTist have you using a foam roller? The foam roller makes the world of difference to me. I saw Spirit of the Marathon in the theater last week. It was interesting but not worth the $30 I paid for me and the kids to see it. I recommend waiting until its on tv. It was more like one of those athlete highlights you see tons of during the olympics. Laurie

maybe we should call this the weekly newbies and monty python thread? Wink Laurie- I'm with you on the foam roller and the pull bouys. I guess styrofoam is our friend in many ways. Interesting review of the SOTM movie. I haven't seen it yet. Somewhere I got an email of the DVD release, this summer I think. Was Spamalot good? I actually had a chance to go see it and passed. Does that disqualify me from the club? Geez, I don't know what to say about myself that you'd be interested in. My name is Bob. I live in NY, on the eastern end of Long Island. I work in the IT department of a privately owned company. Ran in high school and college, then on and off again till 2001 when I ran my first marathon. Been running mostly just marathons since then. My next marathon will be Boston in April. dg- sorry about tossing you off the bridge. Hopefully all you suffered was a slight flesh wound. Let's see, I mentioned I was running Boston in April, is that the race you are referring to that I have coming up? In a couple of weeks I have a 15k tune up race for that. Regarding my marathon training plan, it's something I made up and is based on this article. It's a good read if you have the time. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244-255-9215-0,00.html Specifically, the plan I came up with is here, if you are interested: http://vteamcalendar.bravehost.com/Training/Boston08.htm I have a friend in Seattle who I'm running it with. He has been trying to break 3 hours all his life, and has come up just short many times. His last attempt was this past fall in Portland, he ran a 3:04, and said that was it, he was done trying. I told him not to give up on his dream, I'd run Boston with him and together we'd break 3 hours. He agreed and so far has been training really hard for this. I'm excited to do the race with him! Getting going again after a layoff can be tough, especially this time of year when many of us are stuck inside. Just remember how good it felt at the end of a really good workout, the pleasant tiredness, the feeling of accomplishment. Not every workout has to be this huge monsterous thing, sometimes a 2 mile walk can give you as good a feeling as a nice long run, it all depends on your attitude and perspective. Start slowly, but at least START! Then after a few weeks, look where you are vs. where you started, then keep it going for a few more weeks. Wash, rinse, repeat.

                        Me

Good afternoon everyone, still no running for me. My achilles hasn't hurt in a couple of days, so I'm thinking that an easy 4 miler might be in order later this week. You won't believe what I just did over lunch. The director of the office that I work in has been hearing about Monty Python, so he brought in search for the Holy Grail and we just watched it over lunch. My sides hurt. I think I laughed more in anticipation of what was going to happen than when it happened. Anyway, I'm off in search of a shrubbery. Cheers Mike

Hello everyone! I'm new both to running and the forum. I'm starting the c25k and was informed of this group. You folks are so cool. Monty Python. NEVER saw it but have recently toyed with the idea of going to the campus on a Friday at midnight to watch it. I've led a sheltered life huh? Wink I was interested to read that some of you also have asthma. I've had allergy issues as long as I can remember but about 20 years ago realized I had asthma. I take Singulair (pill) daily to keep it under control. I'm pretty lucky because I don't experience problems normally. A little about me: I live in a suburb of Columbus Ohio named Galloway. I started walking with friends about 3 years ago in the same year I received a bicycle for my birthday. That year I walked in 5 5k events with the goal of improving my time in each event. I was successful. The next year I rode my bike mostly. I walked in 2 or 3 5k events and wondered what it would be like to RUN a 5k. It was a goal last year but I gave up when my hip joints started protesting. I upgraded my bike to a road bike a year ago and LOVE it. I ride a 25 mile ride from home once a week in BIKING weather. Smile I recently purchased a trainer for my bike but it's so boring riding in the garage. Two weeks ago I started using the membership I've had for a year at a local YMCA. I started the c25k and was feeling great. Last week I experienced a lot of shin pain so I went back to week one. I also had a huge lack of motivation. For someone who has never in their life been physically active until 3 years ago I think I'm doing ok. But I WANT to run. It is my goal to run a 5k this year, the year I turn 50. I'm going to see if I can get my nephew to run with me. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Nancy PS. For some reason I have two logon id's. I'm usually LancesMom (Lance is a dog not an actual kid)

Hi Mike, I can't believe the timing of your movie! Hmmm, are you sure your director isn't reading this forum? Save your shrubbery search for when you can run and look for it, which hopefully will be soon.

                              Trails are hard!

for a moment, I thought we had a celebrity mom joining us....Lance, a bike, Lance Armstrong...get it? Wink Oh well, welcome Nancy. always room for another member of our not so exclusive club. And you're an actual newbie!! Some of our member's miles are beginning to stretch the definition of newbie (Jem and teresa, you know who you are Smile ) deb--glad to see you're both posting again and recovering slowly. So all we need to bring you out of lurkdom was a Monty Python reference? have to remember that for next time. btb--how do you have time to run with your exhaustive posts? Of course I have to watch myself--these forums are a lot more interesting than work. No, I haven't been icing the shins after a run. by the time I'm out of the shower, they don't hurt any more and I sort of forget. Do shin splints come and go that quickly? never had anything like this before. Roberta--glad to see you're working on getting back on the road. And signing up for a race, too. I did the same with my Disney 10K. Now all I have to do is get rid of of my shin tightness so I can start running 10k at a time. Linda--way to stick with it. hope the weghts and yoga continue to help (and not hurt so much) Hi to everyone else--works been over for about 20 minutes, so I better head home. Maybe the next poster could start a new thread? this one's getting long. Kevin

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.
