MikeE, this story made me all teary eyed. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Troy, I always enjoy reading your posts. I always learn something new from you. BTW, you can whine as much as you want here.

Holly, that is one great HM time!!! Congrats.

Bregarcito, 2AG!!! A huge congrats to you too!!!

Spareribs, what a great photo of the cousins. Your son is as handsome as you.

Stumpy! that must be tough to be away from home for 2 long weeks like that. Thanks for taking the time to say hello here.

Twocat, have fun  in Amsterdam with your DW and friends. Still not running?

Well, the end of the garden season is here and I need another day off to do all the things I want to get done. The rain is still not here, so I decided to go out for a slow 6 miler this afternoon to break away from the canning. The autumn leaves are still breathtaking. During the run i saw two big packs of sand-hill crane going south. Snow is just around the corner from us.

...What a Truly Great Story mikeE///........one of those Smile to Yourself  Moments after you read it

      that remind

us what Running is all about.

      thanks for sharing

..nothing takes the place of persistence.....

What a great thing, Mike!  I was smiling about his sons coming to run with him, then you got to the part about the race officials.  So very cool.

I've been incommunicado since Friday.  Went over to Weaverville and ran the inaugural Weaver Basin 50k yesterday.  First class race, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.  Came in 2nd to last in 8:03:30, but got 3rd female!  (Of course, there were only 3 women, but I'll take a placement whenever I can get it!)  The guy who won, finished in 3:48:12 - Shocked

4597 feet of elevation gain/loss, with a significant chunk of that in the 2nd half of the run.  Two-hour drive home and yard work today, and I'm pooped.

Hope everyone else is doing well -

I have to tell you, I have never felt LESS like going to a race.

Absolutely no mojo - I have no idea why.  .

Holly - maybe you’ve been to too many boomer reunions.
Afterwards, it’s just not the same running by yourself.
          However, very nice racing.

          ..
Nice try Troy but, after those photos of Redoubt, Illiamna, et al, you're not going get us to feel sorry for your weather up there, . . . especially compared to erika. Smile
          .
          That’s really powerful, Mike.
          Good luck to your friend.

          .

I can see it's too late now for Tribregger,  you are a triathlete.

IMH note: while Tribee was swimming 5 miles yesterday, it was 2.4 miles in the swim leg for nearly 2,000 triathletes who had variously qualified for the 2012 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii (IMH). Unfortunately, after a stop sign hiding in front of the Hawaiian sunset jumped up and totaled his bike on Friday and dislocated his shoulder, my now 81-yo Ironman mentor was watching from the sidelines for the first time since 1985.  Sister Madonna (82), who’s been doing ‘em since 1985 too, had trouble at mile 90 of the 112 cycle course and DNF’ed. Having other kind of issues, Lance Armstrong, a teen-age triathetic phenom in the eighties who was planning to IMH this year, DNS'ed.

RCG, how neat you got to shake the president's hand.  mari, nice job in your 10K with 2nd in AG.  Tammy, good for you and your son, you in the 10K and your son 2nd AG in the 5K.  Holly, way to go fighting the wind in your half.  breger, congrats on 2nd in AG in your sprint tri.  Mike, what a neat thing you, your friend's son's, and the race people did for your friend.  ribs, great picture of the "kids".  fatozzig, congrats on your 50K.

Nice long runs for RCG and Jay.

This morning, we had the 60ish weather roch mentioned but it was raining and there were threats of thunder and lightning.  I did 3 miles on the TM, averaging 10:20/mile.

A good day and good runs for all.

Look at the grouse! Look at the grouse!!

Stumpy, can you use drop off laundry service? Unless you're bored I guess.

              Rock on Breger.

Before I forget--Jay--everytime you tell us about seeing a skunk, I always want to tell you that in all my life I have never seen a live skunk. I've seen plenty of dead ones on the roads and I've smelled many more, but I've never seen one.  Well, last Wednesday, I saw one!  I was running along and spotted it up ahead...he spotted me and rasied his tail...I got my tail out of there as quick as I could.  Anyway--I thought of you, right away.

So, yesterday, I was eating breakfast with the high school cross country team after running with them and I get a phone call from the mom of one of the guys on Ryan's cross country team.  She told me about how her husband just found out this week that he has testicular cancer.  He's having surgery on Monday and will be starting chemo treatments right after.  He was signed up for a half marathon in 2 weeks and, since he knows he won't be able to do it then, he decided that he was going to run the course on Sunday--which is today.  She was telling me this because she was trying to get as many people as she could to come to the finish line and cheer for him as he finished.  Well, I went ahead and ran it with him.  His son from my son's cross country team drove home and surprised him, this morning.  So, I joined him and his two sons on the run.  (By the way--I made sure it was okay that I ran with them--I didn't want to go if he would have rather just run with his sons)  Anyway...last year he did this race in 1:43.  This year, we finished it in 1:33:13.  Okay--here's the really cool part--somehow, the race officials found out about it and came to the finish line with a banner and presented him with his medal and finishers' jacket.  It was really a very cool scene to watch as his family and friends surrounded him with so much love and support.

I love this sport!!!!!! The skunk can spray about 6'...Give them 30' clearance just in case.

              Proud parents rock, Ribs.

              Sweet Holly.

Lucky Veta. Tag's been ice cream free all weekend and he's being a pest about it.

Holy Sh** Leslie. In another life I'd like to be your twin something.

I had a volunteer shift at the Lighthouse Half Marathon. It's been raining all weekend and most things are soaked to the core. I got there at 6:00 AM (!st one on duty, when will I learn?) and set up the med tent and cots. Thank goodness I had a small flashlight. Then went and put tables up in the food tent. That's when the rest of the crew showed up. Mostly a local cross country team, teachers and parents. By 7:00 all the food was out and most of the crew was trying to avoid the down pour. . Chips..Soda ("pop" if you're 100% Yank), bananas and water. For the entry fee, I was a little confused and there was some grousing. When I looked at the truck's trailer, I saw it had refrigeration. I looked in the back and asked them guy inside if he looked in the doors. Lots of bagels, muffins and cookies!! After everything was cut, stocked and loaded, the crew waited under the getting smaller tent. A few of us helped get cases of water to the finish shoot. There were 500 registered runners and nearly 600 bottles of water at the finish. As it was still raining and 52F, I suggested that overheating may not be an issue. We'd only have to carry the extra back. The box truck with the drop bags showed up, so I went to help unload that. That was pretty well organized.

Then the runners started coming in! I parked myself at the finish shoot and played gofer. 1st female was a kid I've known since moving here. Very kewl. Very wet! I looked for Dave59, but didn't see him. Sad When people came down the shoot and looked rough, I'd offer to get their drop bag while escorting them to the food tent. Only one person wound up at the med tent in the time I was there.

I brought two changes of clothing and was still wet and cold when I left for Church. It was really hard to leave. Thank goodness the RD gave me a swag shirt. I normally won't wear a race shirt unless I was in the race, however, I was starting to shake and have back spasms. What I thought was my second pair of shoes were really slippers. I had the nicest slippers in Church though.

Lots of good stories today. Forgot how nice this forum is.

Well done on the racing folks.

Good to see the PT might be working TW.

Amsterdam sounds nice when awake. Enjoy TC

                Very nice Mike. Very nice.

Slow day here with a 6 am run with some really sore legs from yesterday. Getting back into condition is going to be a chore. Watched my boys play a very good soccer match today but they had some poor luck and lost. We still had DQ. Mostly because I wanted a dipped cone but it was nice to sit and talk about the game and have some quiet time. I get more of that with the new job and it is priceless.

Tough sports weekend with a great ND game yesterday and an epic beat down for the Colts. The highs and lows of being a fan.

                Cheers.

Agreed!  I'm impressed with Holly, Byll, and Leslie's racing!  And what a great story, Mike.

Yesterday we had snow flurries all day, and I took the dogs out for 4 miles around the neighborhood. I put off my long run till today, and the weather was  perfect!   Mid 50's, sunny, and breezy.  I ran 22.22 trail miles - I admit I ran around the parking lot at the end to make that total come out...  Wink

I hammered down the trail, passing rocks and trees like they were standing still.
