Masters Mardi Gras Monday Runs and Such (Read 523 times)

Slo

Good Morning Master......... I've been busy ! Tough keeping up with you guys. No runs for me to report. Just a story about Snow, wind, Black Ice, New Driver and a Cattle Yard. Originally my Sunday Plans included a casual morning and an early afternoon 4 mile race followed up with some Chili and Beer. That all changed Sat night while at a birthday party for 2 of my nieces back in my home town. My youngest DD talked me into letting her spend the night.......which ment I would have to go back to get her the next day......Race Scrapped...... Rewind to Friday. Friday night and into Sat am we had gotten 4 inches of fresh snow. The temps were low so the snow was light and fluffy. Sat night the North winds picked up blowing the snow creating drifts. By Sunday afternoon the winds died down. You may recall I have a new driver. Since I was going up to Mom and Dads I thought it would be good to get my New Driver some highway experience. I'm happy to report he did very good! But......we turned off the highway.......I grew up in a very small town in Iowa off the beaten track. The road home off the highway is a hilly road with lots of blind corners. A good test for my new driver. Shortly after turning onto the road we started to encounter pacthes of packed snow......Light trails of snow had been snaking across the road from the remaining winds. As cars drove over these it would pack the snow, turning it into a glare of ice. This was pretty easy to spot and my DS was doing a very good job of handleing the corners, the slick patches and the wind. Until.......we crested a hill. On top of this hill was a not so obvious patch of ice. The rear wheels broke loose and sent the rear end of the pickup to the right. It all happened so fast from here. DS took evasive action.....a little late....inexperience......I knew we were headed for the opposite ditch. 50mph.....head first into the ditch, the truck continued on it's wayward path spinning completely around and now we were facing the opposite direction of travel. The pickup, still moving.....up the opposite bank of the ditch......one fence post......two fence post.......three......the truck comes to a rest.......snow is covering the windshield. We're a little shaken....obviously.....but no one is hurt. I get out of the truck to find ourselves smack dab in the middle of a feedlot surrounded by beef cattle.......stareing at us in complete and udder (pun) Awe. Thank goodness for cell phones. We sustained a little damage. We popped the bead on the front tire so it was flat. I've been without a spare tire for about a year. We walked to the farmers house.....the older brother of a High School class mate......informed him about his fence......called my Dad who happens to have the same model and year pickup I have so I was able to use his spare tire. It took us about and hour to change the tire. The ground was frozen thank goodness. Else we would not have been able to to that. We would have been in 8 inches of "$h!t" and the jacks would have just sunk into the ground. Rewind again.....As we were driving down the 4 lane seeing cars in the ditch from the night before I pondered the fact that with all the miles I've traveled in bad weather, all the years I have behind the wheel......I have never been in the ditch. My thoughts then shifted to my spare tire......I've been flirting with being stranded for over a year by driving without a spare tire.....I should get that taken care of soon. It is really funny how these thoughts can be a prelude of things to come ! So I have a little damage to my truck, an invaluable lesson for a new driver and a lifetime memory for Grandpa, Father and Son......although I can think of better ways to aquire these memories ! To add insult to injury.......I was the "On-Call" guy this week. I was down to my final hours....Just 4 to go.....Then 3:00am this morning there's problems at work.......So, shower, throw on some clothes, out the door. Took me 30 mins to get the line back up......Missed my morning swim work out Cry . Nothing that a good run can't cure tonight !
Wow - Slo_Hand, I'm not sure that's the type of "experience" you want your new driver to have! It's really fortunate that neither of you were hurt and there wasn't more serious damage done to your truck. How is your DS handling all this? Did you go home and have a stiff drink?! Intervals this morning. A mile warmup at 9:51 followed by 30 minutes of intervals, treadmill set at 7.2 work and 6.2 rest, alternating 2 minutes of each. Ended with a mile cool down at 9:31 and some inclinded lunges and core work. It felt good to break a good sweat! Big grin I see Slum Dog took most of the Academy Awards. A good movie, but I think there were others that got slighted this year (like Gran Torino - loved Clint Eastwood in that). Have a great start to the new week everyone.
I made it out at 5:30 this morning. 5 easy miles in 43:56. SLO that is quite a story to start a monday. I remember shortly after getting my license I was driving in icy conditions, lost the back end on a curve, tried to correct and ended up in a snowbank. I too grew up in a rural area. Luckily there was a farmer who was plowing his driveway and saw the whole thing. When he finished laughing he pulled me out. I was shaken, but a much more aware winter driver after that. I didn't see any nominated movies yet this year. Maybe over the summer when things come out on video I can get caught up. But I want to say thank you to everyone and it is an honor just to be able to post here.

Jlynne, I'm heading for the bourbon bottle now from just reading the story.... Ahhh, woke up at 4 a.m. with my throat raw from my little cold. Wind was howling, so I scrapped my outdoor run. Gonna crank up the heat at lunchtime and run real slow on the treadmill to sweat out some of this stuff.

          GOALS 2012: UNDECIDED

          GOALS 2011: LIVE!!!

Morning, all! Wow, Steve - glad to hear no one was hurt - not even the cows. ((((((((nonoruns)))))))) - hope you feel better soon! Another 18 miles on the treadmill on Saturday morning. I was scheduled for 20, but I ran out of time. We were supposed to go out on a seal watch cruise. We showed up at the appointed time only to find out that the expedition had been canceled because of "high winds" - funny, the website and the person who made my reservation stressed that they never cancel because of the weather. Oh well......we'll try again on the 7th. 6.5 easy recovery treadmill miles this morning. My condolences to the Maine folks who got the snow that skipped over Connecticut - we're sending the winds behind it as well. I really hate wind........ Good runs to all!

Geez, Slo Hand. That is a scary one. Hope the DS is not too shaken now. No run for me today. I felt tired all afternoon yesterday after the sorta hard 20 miler. Slept 10 hours last night and feeling better this morning. My body is definitely tuned into MP, but the stamina/endurance needs to improve to get that last 10K done. Yesterday's overall marathon winner blazed in so fast that he passed up the escort motorcycles and he had no Tape ready for him. So they had to reenact it for the winner's photo. Of course the time on the clock shows incorrectly as a (very slow for him) 3:10 time. I recall this happened to Jdmom3 in Cleveland a few years back. The temp at the start was a fine 58 degrees, but it got warm and humid later. 2 dozen people were treated for heat related issues. Ahh the joys of running on Florida ... Bill

"Some are the strong, silent type. You can't put your finger on exactly what it is they bring to the table until you run without them and then you realize that their steadiness fills a hole that leaks energy in their absence." - Kristin Armstrong

              Marathon Maniac #957

Yikes, Slo_Hand! Although I do think it might turn out to be a good thing: your new driver’s first accident happened with no injuries, and you were present to help. Now he has a whole new appreciation for the dangers of driving, and that may cause him to drive even more carefully in the future. 2 recovery miles for me on the TM, followed by lateral raises, superman lifts, triceps extensions, lunges, glute raises, hammer curls, push-ups and stability ball crunches. Happy Monday!

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

                i'm lovin' it... MM#1949

Glad that was just a learning experience Slo_. Good story for sure! 3 Magical Healing Miles with Tory in 30:37 (10:12 pace, AHR 134) followed by 5 x 10 sec hill sprints. Legs feel great today!

                  Hill Runner

Good morning everyone, I was busy painting most of the weekend but I did get some abbreviated runs in both Sat & Sun so I"m taking a rest today. We Tivo'd the Oscars last night so we'll watch it tonight sans commercials. I'm glad Slumdog won...really good movie although I also liked Sean Penn in Milk. Good runs to everyone today.

                    Upcoming Races:

Yikes Slo!! That brought back flash backs of my taking my family into the ditch on a very stormy winter's night. I thought for sure I had killed my dad as his head had hit the front window. He was bleeding and had blacked out for a few minutes. Long story short - everyone was okay and the only damage tot he car was a broken tail light. It really shook me up for a long time though. I hope your DS is handling it okay. I'm taking a rest day after the grueling runs I put in over the weekend. For the past two weeks I've been getting in short runs on the treadmill instead of taking a day off. I think it is time for a rest now. Kind of like these two: Happy Monday!

Mardi Gras…on a Monday? Lundi Gras? Confused Erika—tough one yesterday. Brrrrr. Perch—thanks for the encouragement. Interesting site you linked to; I bookmarked it and will poke around when I have more time. Slo-Hand—glad you and your son are okay. I’m a little worried nono is finding excuses to hit the bourbon at 8 in the morning. Wink Sue—18 on a treadmill. That takes grit. Recovery 5.2 miles @ 9:06. Windy out there again today. Seems like we're getting a lot of that lately. Have a good week!

                        Be safe. Be kind.

                        Mariposai

hope you feel better nono. SueT, your training is going to well...I am proud of you girl. PDR, great long run yesterday...you are looking gooddddddddddd. Enkie, please give me a slice of that artisan bread you made the other day. Francesca, are you all recovered after you week in Seattle last week? Hi tramps!!!!!!!!! I had fun night last night as I watched my 16 y/o and his friend cook lasagna and greek salad for their friends who just happened to be girlsWink. I was all teary eyed when I went to the dinning room and saw the table properly set with the best china, napkins, gobbles and candles...yeap...all those years of practice is paying off. New snow around here. 5 easy miles at pre-dawn. Will do some stretching during lunch.

5 recovery paced miles this morning with T...8:26 pace

SLO_HAND a lot more "exciting" than a typical run I must say. Glad to hear nobody was hurt and that you gave some cows a story to relate to each other in the days ahead! As to the spare tire, you might want to check out Tire Rack before buying one at your local retailer. They were a catalog firm and now they are an internet retailer. Anyway, I have found that their prices are often substantially below those you will find locally, even with shipping and all other additional costs taken into account. Jlynne intervals on a TM my worst nightmare! Dead Congratulations on getting them done. Craneium so how much damage? Smile Nothing like teenagers learning to drive in slick conditions! nonoruns you are the only gal I know who drinks bourbon! I can tell we would get along just great! A good bourbon is basically as good as good scotch at half the price in my humble opinion. Oh yes, lots of rain around here yesterday. But since I cannot run feel free to visit us in CT! SueT48 from your post a few days ago, alas you are right I am insanely jealous you all can run and all I can do is couch potato. Nice TM run this morning. Well for a TM run. Yea, I am real sorry the snow skipped us here in CT. Cry Been crying my eyes out all day! Big grin [editor: sarcasm is so unbecoming. Tsk, tsk.] breger1 I read about your attempt to pull a Rosie Ruiz in that marathon! You should join my relay team, "The Rosie Ruiz Fan Club" you would fit right in! Holly S. nice little TM run. evanflein wow 19 miles in some pretty cold temps! The fade could be a combination of the weather, hills, and just one of those days. Mariposai hmm you said Spareribs prescribed 3 recovery miles, not that you did 3 recovery miles . . . enquiring minds want to know. Smile wildchild sounds like you had a fun run yesterday -- dogs, and kids! Next week maybe dogs and kids at the same time? Cool deez4boyz good luck with your version of the Galloway plan. I have used his plan on occasion and I think it is really good. My DW now routinely walks all water stops in a race and finds it is a big help. busiman very nice 21 mile run and on International Long Run Day so very appropriate. Peter NC not quite so nice here in CT. We had rain, rain, rain. Glad you had good weather for your nearly HM run in the hills. Teresadfp ah college visits. I wish I could say I remember them well. My only memory is of visiting Penn and the professor, yes professor, told me it was an elite school for people who had nothing to be elite about. Confused What a sales person! It is true the facilities at larger schools are better. But there is more to college than the physical plant. A small school will mean closer friends going forward in life. Also, the quality of the track team will ultimately not be very important to your kid's lives. For my two cents, I would just find a place where you think they will do as well as possible academically and the track team and facilities will be whatever they are. enkephalin hey, 10 miles is never wimpy! Take that back! Big grin halllar nothing like the great, cold, windy outdoors to help out on a run! hopeful4ever it looks like it is not yet time to put away those Yak Tracks. On my front let me see. My DW went to the gym yesterday to do 3 miles on the TM. A brave and tenacious soul she is. On the medical front: I have dueling doctors with dueling diagnosis. The neurologist thinks the problem is mechanical. The orthopedist that it is neurological. The compromise is to run an EMG on my on Wednesday, and then schedule an MRI if that comes up negative. I did some research the other day and I can see why they are battling. My symptoms do not really match up neatly with what you would expect for either a mechanical or neurological problem. I have not run for over two weeks, which should have resulted in substantial improvement if this is mechanical and it has not. On the other hand, there are several ancillary problems that I should have if this is neurological and I have none of them. Oh well . . . Now on the indirectly really good news front: I am the advisor for a group of students in a security analysis competition. The U.S. contest is run by New York Society of Security Analysts and my kids (err, . . . kids as in 20 somethings) WON! I am so proud of them. Big grin This Friday they get to ring the opening bell for the Nasdaq (yep, it is televised) and at the end of next month head off to London for the international face off across the winning teams from each continent. I give them good odds to win that too!

Live like you are dying not like you are afraid to die.

Perch - I hate to say this, but your running log looks really strange. Tongue Twocat - That is so cool! Way to go "kids". Mariposai - can you teach my DH and son some of these valuable lessons? SLO - scary but surely a good lesson Today is rest day, but I'm itching to run....

"During a marathon, I run about two-thirds of the time. That's plenty." - Margaret Davis, 85 Ed Whitlock regarding his 2:54:48 marathon at age 73, "That was a good day. It was never a struggle."
