    Mornin' everyone!

Weird story about the disappearing gas can, Dave. Did it every show up?

There sure was some waxing of the old philosophical yesterday, wasn't there? But it's all good stuff among friends who are exploring new frontiers in their (our) lives.

Thanks for adding up the miles for us geezer, Mike.

Nice 12-er on the trails in the warmth, and with stomach issues, Enke. I hope Mr. Clooney/20 comes around again soon.

I must admit, TW, that I've never seen that video before...

Congrats on the double-digit run and the pig-sighting, Stumpy!

I'm glad to see you're relishing (not) the taper blues, Evanflein. Soon, soon.

Sounds like a very well-spent day yesterday, Starr. But I'm not buying that 'old geezer' stuff from you!

Nice Garmin-free run and beautiful photos, once again, WC.

    Francesca's doing a 6-Day race!!

Well, I can talk about being slow too, because that is what I was in yesterday's One-Hour Racewalk Championship. The race was on the track at Gloucester (MA) HS. The men's race started at 8:30. By then it was cloudless, sunny, almost breezeless, and warming up to the uppers 70s. At the start, I wanted to keep up with a couple of other guys, and did, but I should have known better. I did my first 4 laps/1 mile in 10:00, which was great, but too fast for me. I backed off a bit, but the damage was done. That quick start and the heat had me thinking at a couple of points that I might wind up as a DNF. But I kept plugging along, being lapped by more walkers than I was passing. It felt like the first half hour took about 40 minutes. I felt a bit more positive once we got into the second half hour. I was focusing on maintaining good form, but I knew my turnover rate was for carp. Because of the heat, I took more water than I usually would, and twice just poured it over my head to try to cool down. At the end of the hour, I had gone 8972 meters (5.57 miles), which was about 2/10 mile shorter than when I last did this race in 2010. I was 12th of 19, and 3rd in my age group. I had gotten one 'warning' (for a suspected bent knee) during the race. I was also very dehydrated, and suffered for a few hours after the race. The winner of the race covered about 7.8 miles in the hour, and was amazing to watch (I got to see him from behind, as he lapped me a few times). It was a tough day, but I was glad that I went; I know what I need to work on before my next race, in a couple of weeks.

    Have a greta Monday!

    Jay

Without ice cream there would be darkness and chaos.

    Dave59

Ran an easy 6.18 this morning.  Hoping for a good productive day at work.

Sounds like a tough race in the heat, Jay.  The fatigue from dehydration can last a couple days.  Hope you are feeling better today.

      Sayhey! MM#130

Good Morning!  (or afternoon or evening...)

Hope everyone enjoyed some part of the super moon.  Gosh, it certainy was bright this morning, wasn't it?

I saw the movie "Hugo" Saturday night.  All day Sunday, I felt as if part of me was still there.  What a spell it cast on me!  I did a little poking around and learned it's based on a true story (about the older film maker).  The novel by Brian Selznik, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, looks just gorgeous, with lots of intricate illustrations.  I really would love to see that book.   Otherswise. I was AWOL this weekend, mostly doing some extra chores/cooking for DH since I'll be away next weekend.  Thought about you all often.

I always love hearing about the college hunting, so keep up the accounts, please Holly.  And what a neat story about DH finding his old school chum.  I'd definitely take up his offer to visit in HA....and you can perhaps do it around the marathon and get in that state, soo.

I was going to quote TomS, tet, tw and Ribs, but Mike wrote such an eloquent tribute, I don't remember my times at Omaha,  Seattle or Dallas, where there were meet-ups I attended, but I do remember rooming with Starr, hanging with Saint & Ribs, Mari and others, running with Tamster, learning about grilling from Erika and her DH, eating with twocat....wow, the list is so long, I am leaving out so much.  Just proves the point the wises ones have made.  Yes, what they all said!

Congrats Mike!  You deserve the dancing banana, for true.

Fingers crossed that #20 is a match, enke.  (There's an old show, the "Match Game."  Remember "box of socks' and "bag of rags?")

Suonds like good aches, Leslie I have to try tailwind soon.

While I broke 21 earlier this year on a 5K, seem to mired of late; ran a 21:21 Saturday.  One of our local runners pushes her daughter (who has CP) at many races; they are very fast, but had a bit of an off day Saturday.  Gave my trophy to the daughter; her smiles are so wonderful and joyful.  She inspired me; as I was running, I was thinking about my morning.  DH and I got up early and went to the race site (scenic spot, you can see the sun rise over the water) to get in some miles before the race.  COmpared that to getting up and getting a child with special needs up, fed, bathed and dressed, transported and then secured in the racing chair, not to mention your ownself.   Some folks just live heroic lives deep inside the ordinary, every day.

So Erika, you are on a good taper!  Way to go.  I am not, but I'm just looking to have fun with old chums in SD, not much else as there's the elevation and the hills, both of which will be challenging to my Floridagirl self.    Also sort of practicing for September, when I have back to back marathons (one each weekend, not 2 in one weekend).  So 19 at 9:15 pace Sunday; friend is hoping to qualify for Boston in early September at Lehigh Valley, in PA.   Thenthis am,  8 out at the park to appreciate the moon to the maximum extent possible!

        Good rest of Monday, everyone,

        grins,

After our LR's yesterday the Saint and I did a 3.4 mile recovery run early this morning.  Kind of awkward though, as I was busy texting with Holly about Mexico.  Did a thorough flexibility workout at the Y afterwards, and now off to work.  Spareribs

Jay - your training walks at j'o'clock probably contributed to the heat/dehydration issue.  but you still out pace many of us!

this morning spent x-training in house cleaning, the stuff no one sees but us - yeach!!!

francesca's awesome - we saw a 6 day race down under years ago before i was even a runner now i'm more in awe.

some of us 'old folks' live in awe of the young folks times - i never had them, but then i started as an old folk - 57!

have a post super moon day!

Gave my trophy to the daughter; her smiles are so wonderful and joyful.

              That is so super-nice aamos.
              .

              I don't remember my times ..

Divechief might but I do know they were good enough for some 100 marathon AG medals so far.

              super-swim under the super-moon, . ..
well, more of a super-splash having fun blowing underwater bubbles
into the underwater moon beams same as I’d been teaching 5-yo GS to do in the pool.
still perfect timing for the next couple of nights in case it's warm where you are too.

              ..
Hoping to hear this week how the big bird is doing.
I hope good enough they’ll let me go see her again.
              .
MY FIRST RA RANT - how’d the word “porn” instead of “candy” get associated with pictures of things we like to do such as trail running, etc. that have nothing to do with those other things,, . . I think.  .  Yuk.  Kinda like DFL that’s “DGL” for those of us lucky enough to have already been at the top of Mt. Fuji before the finish (“go-ru” ) banner is unceremoniously pulled down at 4hr/30min causing runners on the other side to collapse in tears, the 17-hour Ironman cutoffs at midnight, nearly all ultras, etc. <<<(deadgloriouslast)>>>
              .
ps jay - nice to get to watch the speedsters so frequently.
Do they just have the faster cadence or longer strides

of younger runners or is form so different?

Had to top Dave59, so did 6.3 on this muggy Monday morning. Ran with two semi-ailing friends, so it was a bit slower than usual with a few walking breaks. I'm definitely at the point where the social aspect of running means more to me than the speed/distance/training part.

Aamos, I thought of you when I was planning our upcoming road trip where we'll be in the Black Hills & Rapid City area for a couple of days, but then remembered that you're no longer in residence there.

Can't believe that tet has been in this group so long and is just now going on his first rant. I'll have to go back through the archives...

We're taking my MIL out to my friend's summer house on Harsen's Island the next couple of days as the final event in her 90th birthday celebration. Not sure if I'll run while out there, but I'll probably take my bike. Be good while I'm gone.

So true, and a good reminder of the inspirational around us every day.

Jay - tough racing in the heat!

Today was supposed to be a rest day, but I don't know how much running I will get in next weekend (we're going to some boat races in Indiana) so I got out for just a short one - 2.4 easy miles in 74 degrees.

No supermoon here - it was overcast all night.

Life is a headlong rush into the unknown. We can hunker down and hope nothing hits us or we can stand tall, lean into the wind and say, "Bring it on, darlin', and don't be stingy with the jalapenos."

just check for general ones, not counting anything I might have inadvertently said about a certain other senior poster.

Aamos - that was awesomely cool. What a giving heart you have. Oh and that's still a speedy race.

Way to gut it out Jay.

                      How's the productivity Dave?

That tet sure is an eloquent fella. Nicely said yesterday.

Roch - thepath I was mentioning is the Canal TowPath that runs a canal next to the White River in Indy. Basically from Broad Ripple to downtown. Oh and we aren't too huge on canals in Indiana since the Wabash canal bankrupted the state in the late 1800's. That one is still around in  bits and pieces.

Boat races in Indiana Holly. Where?

Ran early this morning just to get the legs up and then had a harder run at lunch. This is a two-a-day schedule I can manage.

I watched Desert Runners yesterday and it got me to thinking. My 50th birthday is about a year and a half away. I would like to do something interesting that includes running. There is a Midwest Grand Slam but those are for 100 milers. 4 in one year. Not sure if I can manage that. I'm open for suggestions since I have some time to train/plan. Oh and DW said not to plan a vacation around a race. We'll do something together that doesn't have running as a focus. Same with kids since both DW and I turn 50 in the same year.

Mike, great showing at the senior games with 1st in 10K.  mari, happy anniversary to you and happy birthday to your son.  That franc is a super running machine.  Holly, neat meet up you had with your husbands school friend.  Jay, way to tough it out in the championship race walk.  Aamos, what a speedy 5K.  Your friend is admirable pushing her daughter in races.  I periodically see parents doing this and I think they are awesome.  marj, I ran my first race at age 56 after starting running in the previous year.

Nice long runs for mari, Mike, wild, fatozzig, The Saint, ribs, enke, stumpy, and wild.

This morning, it was in the mid 60s and there was just a light breeze.  I did 8 miles at an 11:29 pace.

Yesterday's posts confirmed my conviction that this is a remarkably friendly and encouraging group.  Without you people, I don't know if I would have kept going.  Sometimes, it's been your pats on the back and sometimes it's been that I feel I'd better get out and run or else I won't be able to post on the site.  It's sort of like the run is the dues for being part of the group.  I know you'd accept my posts without running but sometimes I need the incentive.

This afternoon, I signed up for the Crim 10 miler.  I've mentioned that my daughter works for the Crim foundation.  A while back she told me they were going to put up a statue of Bobby Crim and they area would have bricks with the names of people who have contributed to the project.  She made a donation in my name so I'll have a brick with my name on it (probably among hundres of bricks).  Today, she texted and told me that they were unveiling the statue the Thursday evening before the Crim.  She suggested that I show up early, get my race packet, and work at the packet pick up beforehand.  I guess I've got a plan.

A good day and good runs for all.

Need a fast half for late fall.  Then I need to actually train for it.

And sir, you are a first class, A number 1 Class Act and as Kevin explained, we all go out there a lot of times and run when we might be thinking about slacking  'cause we are hoping we get a mention and tip of the cap from your honor.

                            grins and a high 5,

Today I am pleased to announce that I tried a workout that was too hard to complete. Smile I think I was dehydrated from the weekend and Monday is a bad day to do 1/2 mile intervals. I got the first three in the zone (looking for 4 @ 3:40 or faster) and hit 3:32, 3:27, and 3:31. I probably should have rested a little more before #4, and wound up stopping to walk after :50. My right hamstring was tightening up and so I bailed on it. Wound up walking 1/8 mile, jogging 1/2 mile, stretching for a few minutes, then jogging the last 3/4 mile back to the building. A little tender right now but not pulled. Tweaked, not injured.

Today I also failed to see pigs, peregrines and people walking dogs.

                                Failing isn't so bad.
