Occasional Runner

A little FYI...ultrasignup is now logging your DNF's at the bottom of the list of your race history. I had heard about this a few weeks ago but didn't really bother to look mine up until I was in there yesterday signing up for a couple of races. I discovered a LONG list of DNF's that weren't actually DNF's. Evidently if you DNS and don't alert ultrasignup in advance, it'll be reported as a DNF because your name will appear as an entrant, but you won't have a finish time. Also, I had several races where I elected to drop down to a shorter distance. For example, when I got Lyme disease, I was feeling like shit. Rather than DNS the Finger Lakes 50M, I asked to drop down to the 50K. I ran it, finished it, and have a result in ultrasignup. But because I was originally registered for the 50M, they also show a DNF.

I sent them an email and listed the races that weren't DNF's. I got an immediate response, saying I can change those races to DNS if I sign into my account and follow the prompts. I'm a little irritated that it even has to be listed as a DNS because I actually started and finished those races, just a different distance. (Except the Salt Flats 100. I didn't even bother showing up for that shit show this year)

At any rate, if you're active, or have been active in the ultra scene, you may want to check your results and verify for accuracy.

    Are we there, yet?

Thanks for the alert. I noticed they also began ranking/rating the fixed time races which they didn't used to do. If those percentages mean anything (I have no idea how ultrasignup comes up with them), I feel even better about my first 2 ultras, a couple 12-hour races where I just missed 50 miles.

       2024 Races:

            03/09 - Livingston Oval Ultra 6-Hour, 22.88 miles

            05/11 - D3 50K
            05/25 - What the Duck 12-Hour

            06/17 - 6 Days in the Dome 12-Hour.

No DNFs here, but I do rank 75% of the time. I think my wife would argue with that and state that I rank after most every run.

In dog beers, I've only had one.

that's a nice feature to see. I'm always interested in the drop rate at races.

My one and only DNF was earned.

Thanks for the heads up, I had a race in there that was free to register for down as a DNF, I made the change as well as another. My trail running awesomeness is still mediocre at best.

You can't get hung up on your ranking on that website because it's severely flawed and can definitely be manipulated.

A decent runner that only races local events will always have a higher rank than a runner of the same skill set that runs regional or national level events. This is because your rank in an individual race is determined by your finish time, which is scored against the finish time of the winner. So, if you run races with the best ultra runners in the world, your ranking will suffer. If you're only hitting the races with a bunch weekend warriors, you'll look like a beast on ultrasignup.

When sizing up competition on ultrasignup, I largely ignore the ranking percentage but use it as a guide. I focus on the number of races and then dig deeper by looking at the specific races they've run. That info paints a much clearer picture of a persons ability and performance history.

              Uh oh... now what?

Ha!  I only have one DNF -- Cascade Crest in 2012.  Even in my declining years I can recall several more.  This might be an advantage of old age.  Several of my DNFs were before any RDs felt the need to list more than the number of DNFs.  I am but a number on a well-faded blank page.

I had no DNFs until this year, which has been pretty much everything and is likely to continue in 2014 Smile
