Ever wondered what it's like to go down a frozen waterfall head first? (Read 59 times)

Faster Than Your Couch!

    Well, wonder no more.

Here's the result. Just don't try this at home!

And I thought winter tights, or a long-sleeve shirt and a thick fleece jacket would have some cushioning effect... Clown

I know trail and ultra running is considered to be an extreme sport by some but running on creeks/rivers with waterfalls? What were you doing? Admiring the waterfall?

Looks like your extremities are intact so you will live to run another day.

My favorite day of the week is RUNday

      Faster Than Your Couch!

I was running downhill on a very steep, rocky, rooty section of the trail which was glazed over with a thick layer (some inches thick) of ice. Above that section, there is a huge snowpatch which is melting during the day, but as temperatures aren't much above freezing, and the ground is still cold (and the section faces north and is under trees), the water freezes again when it runs down that section of the trail and forms a "waterfall".

One of my microspikes got stuck in a root, so I tripped and fell head first onto the ice. I slid down some of this "waterfall section", there was no way of stopping. Eventually, I got stuck in between some giant roots and came to a stop. My handheld made it all the way down.

Now I know why it might not be such a good idea to "bomb down" a hill with lots of roots when wearing spikes... Black eye

        Run for fun.

Looks like your bruises have bruises.

Hope all the joint work, that's the important thing.

            Glad you are alright, FTYC!

That does not look too bad. We need more black and blue and some crusty frozen blood.

              Glad you are ok though!

In dog beers, I've only had one.

Hey Couch, did you enjoy your trip? Big grin

Glad to see "only battered and bruised" and nothing broken. Even your pride is intact.  Probably will feel like you were in a bad car accident tomorrow.  I think you deserve  a rest day and some junk food.

I have "run" waterfalls in a canoe or kayak myself though a few times the results have looked pretty similar. Smile

                Nice trail porn!

                  Ouch! sorry to hear that.

umm, no pictures of the waterfall though?

                  Endless trails

Glad your (relatively) okay, couch. That fall had potential to be worse.

My biggest fear is falling, hitting my head, and being a bloody unconscious mess

on the trail until a coyote finds me and I become part of the food chain.

...You know how I know you are a trail runner?.....

You have a photo album of your injuries sustained while running...

Glad you are OK.  I guess I can cross that particular activity off my bucket list.  I'm satisfied after living vicariously through you.  Hope you heal up fast.

                        Uh oh... now what?

They make these really neato cameras that you can mount on your head, wrist, waist... picture is worth a thousand words... splat?

Glad you are okay... you are okay, right?  Helloooooooooooooo?  Yoohoooooo...

Yes, I'm alright. Just was off taxiing kids between swim and dance lessons, feeding them, and tucking them in. Takes longer than finishing a decent 50k! Big grin

And yes, I am glad that it ended just with bruises and scratches, and no broken joints or bones.

Harrier: Ok, thanks for the info. Now I'm sure kayaking is not exactly the sport for me!

Birdwell: I was too lazy to drag the phone with me, so no camera, and no pic. Perhaps when I'll be there next time, I'll bring the camera, hoping the "waterfall" is still there in all its beauty.

jonfer: My running buddy pulled the head-banger recently. He tripped over a rock and fell onto another rock with his head. He was wearing his hat, plus a hood over it, and still the skin was almost broken from the impact, and a huge bruise appeared immediately. Quite some sharp rocks here in PA! Must have been painful, because he stayed on the ground for a while...

John: A video taken with a head-mounted camera would have been spectacular. Almost like bob racing in an ice channel, just the "wilderness" version of that!

Thanks for all your healing vibes. The elbow is a bit sore and stiff, but surprisingly the knee hardly hurts at all. Tomorrow will be a rest day, so I'll be fine after that.

                                Run for fun.
