After taking a day off yesterday, Marley and I enjoyed the cool morning air on our early 4 mile trail run.

15 hilly miles in Nashville, TN this morning. Ran 5 miles on rural roads (a bit precarious), then 5 on great trails in a great park (Percy Warner Park), and then the 5 road miles back to the hotel. The roads were tough to run along, jumping into the ditch on the side when a few cars went by. A good longish last run though; hilly, warm and humid.

My shoulder is messed up and hurts a lot every once in a while when I move it wrong. But not enough to stop me from running. Especially now that I am "officially tapering".

DW has two choral concerts this weekend, so I was alone today for a nice long run.  Was planning on 14, but the weather was nice, and I had some trail magic, so I ended up running close to 20.  I met some very nice horsey people along the way and we were deep in the woods.  Talked for a bit and they asked how long I was running.  I told them probably 14 since I didn't take enough water to run longer.  One man reached in his saddle bag and handed me a bottled water.  I thanked them then decided that I had to go longer now to take advantage of the trail magic.

QOTD:  Do you every give or receive "Trail Magic" (I don't know if this is just an Appalachian Trail term, but it involves giving or receiving an unexpected act of kindness.)?

I've given out candy bars and soda to through hikers on the AT.  Today was one of the few days that I was on the receiving end.

11.5 miles up and down the mountain.

put me over 40 for the third consecutive week.

QOTD: I gave away almost all my food at phantom ranch during my R2R2R attempt.

That was a purely selfish act on my part. The thought of carrying all that crap out of the canyon was making cry a little.

Today is the Rothrock Trail Challenge, a 30k run in State College, and my favorite run. I didn't sign up for it since I was planning on just getting back from vacation yesterday. I thought about driving up and just hanging out and watching the runners but decided to fix my basement lights instead. I'll probably put in 7+ miles on the dirt roads around the house later this afternoon.

QOTD: I rarely see anyone so it's rare to help anyone out. Quite a few years ago when I was still doing some mountain biking I met a couple and the woman had put too much ice in her hydration bladder. I gave her a bottle of warmish water to dump in and start melting the ice. She was really appreciative but the man that was with her seemed very pissed that I gave it to her. He wouldn't even talk or look at me.

QOTD: I have never received any while running, but have countless times on bike tours and a few times when backpacking.  I have given it quite a few times.

                Greetings,

I did a big crash and burn on the mt. bike over in the Kettles today. Fucked up my bike a little and drove the handle bar into myself just below the sternum in addition to a few other bumps and scrapes. But I sucked it up and kept riding until I lost my rear brake, probably as a result of the crash. May have wrecked my rear wheel too.  But I'm not pissing any blood so other than I hurt like hell I'm good to go.

Hope I'll be able to get my long run in tomorrow. Might be an issue with where my pain is located.

Brewery tour in Milwaukee tonight at the Lakefront brewery. Alcohol could be my best medicine.

QOTD- Kind of qualifies to a limited degree- today is Wisconsin's free day at the state parks, fishing, trails, etc. so as we're getting ready to head out on the bikes a car pulls in with a couple bikes and they stop at the entry kiosk and were filling out the paper to pay. From a distance I thought they were paying so I rode over telling my friend if they have Illinois tags I'll just let them pay but if they are Wisconsin peeps I'll clue them in. The guy was writing out the check when I told him and was quite appreciative. That's my good deed for awhile.

The pup and I swept the first 13 miles of the SMUT 100k in Pocatello, Idaho this morning. This is a gorgeous race course and we had a great time running through those mountains together. We startled a moose, which kind of startled me but it evidently found its flight, rather than fight instinct.

We're back in Utah and planning some cool trail adventures for tomorrow.

QOTD: Trail Magic is a term that is really specific to the AT, but I guess its applicable anywhere. I have never been the beneficiary of any such thing, despite logging a great many miles on the AT.

QOTD I can't say I ever did, however if someone needs something, I'm happy to help them.

Going out this evening for 8 to 10. Last night during 5 hours of software downtime I created a training plal for a 50k or marathon in early September. I've got to get busy.

I have escorted lost hikers back to their cars, given what I hope were good directions to others, offered water and snacks.

That's what I thought, but DD#1 says she's heard of it while on the PCT, so maybe it's a"long trail" term related to through hiking.  Anyway, it something you don't see with road running.

Busy at work, so no run yet. And when I came home, DD updated my memory that she'll need to be driven to two parties tonight (end of Marching Band, and such), in between DH's BBQ and the kids' night out in the tent, so I'm a bit desperate figuring out how to squeeze a run into that.

8 last night, which was wonderful. I was feeling great (a bit exhausted, still, and slow, but not totally crapped), and I regret not having gone the full 13 mile distance of that loop (for fear of leaving my family alone for too long . I know they wouldn't be happy without me around...

DD1: I just learned that my running buddy Stephen attempted the Rothrock today and badly injured this leg. He might have ruptured his Achilles tendon - on that first very steep stretch up to the Fire Tower.

Are you planning on coming to do the Eager Seeger HM on June 22 (part of the Tussey Teaser Series)?

QOTD: I've heared "Trail Magic" in connection with the PCT (also the term "Trail Angels" - people who leave stuff at the more frequented towns along the trail for other hikers to take).

I have given out a copy of a map once for hikers to use - I know the area so well, I didn't need it, just had it with me from some earlier run. And I've given directions many times, and warned hikers with dogs of porcupines, rattlesnakes and bears when I had encountered them just before.

                          Run for fun.

Dude!!!  Might as well kick the bike to the curb and go find some 100 miler to pace.  I hope you're okay and your bike isn't too fucked up.

Bella and I had a nice walk this morning and now I'm going for a short road ride on the bike where I don't plan on taking a handlebar to my sternum.

QOTD: I also think this a term mostly specific to thru hikers.  We don't have that kind of thing around here, but I hope to experience some trail magic in my life someday, as I would love to hike the entire AT.

                            Running is dumb.

You might want to keep an eye on that one. Often the injury from attempted impaling with the handlebar is just a bruise, but it may affect internal organs, and not just the kidney.

I once fell on a run and punched myself in the right side with my clenched fist - the pain was excruciating. A few months later, I had to have my gallbladder removed. Not sure if the fall/punch was the cause, but it sure hadn't made things any better.

                              Get well soon again!

Thanks Couch, that sure makes me feel better.   I do feel like I bruised things good internally. Basically came done on the end of the hand grip.  Don't ask me how but it must have looked pretty epic. Need to look at some anatomy pictures to refresh my memory on what is where. I tried the rubbing a little dirt on it but to no avail.  Just sucked it up and tried to be non-chalant about it.

When I broke my hand skiing back in Feb I was hoping to just get to my car and boogie as I was in a ton of pain but the place was dead so when I got to the parking lot of the outfitter out he comes as he knows me and he wanted to show me some things in his shed. I had to grit my teeth and pretend all was good. Stupid pride I guess.

I never get any sympathy from DW.
