Help: stop writing "have ran"! (Read 87 times)

DigDug2

I would like to make a humble appeal for people to stop writing "have ran", "had ran", etc.

    • I run every day.
    • I ran that race last year.
    • I have run that race every year since it started.

I will concede that no one likes a pedantic grammar scold, and that nitpicking people's usage, especially in online forums, is annoying and probably a waste of time.  Since my point relates exclusively to the one verb that brings us all together, however, I hope there may be some sympathy out there.

    Flame away...

    Uh oh... now what?

I don't know about scolding, but I do like it when people take the time to send

a personal message sort of thing to me about any errors--grammatical, data

reference, chronological, geographical--I am (fantasy world) a mathematical

sort and scribble with no real idea of what the rules are.

My writing, like my running, probably best serves as a horrible example.

I just realized how hypocritical the personal message part is since I

sometimes use the strike-through feature to correct spelling errors on the

forum post.  It is usually done to a word that made the sentence humorous,

but, still, I need to be more sensitive.

        Hey pedantic man...

        me run far.

        me post in caveman speak.

me no run that way though.

In dog beers, I've only had one.

Later today I will have jog 3 miles.

J/K, I'm with you.  Grammar and spelling count.

I'm Holden McGruyen. Would you like to join me?

            Me fail English?  That's unpossible!

            Running is dumb.

Thank you.  I was beginning to think I have been wrong all along about using run instead of ran.   "I run, therefore I am"

Not guilty of that one, but certainly lacking perfect English and language skills on occasion, as I'm one of those ESL people... I think of reading through not-perfect (and admittedly hard to read) posts as brain teasers, keeps you young and happy. But on a more serious note, I have often noticed that it is easier for multi-lingual people to put sentences in the right context and understand "wrong" phrases just because we are used to interpreting and improvising and trying to find the right meaning of written or spoken, misspelled information so often.

                Run for fun.

My grandma scolded me about using the word "got" too frequently as a child. Now I am stuck on "have". Sorry. Got to run, er, have to run.

                    I think it's "I ran, therefore I am" Jamie.

                    It's cool, dig dug. I have the same feeling when I hear people use the word;

                    "irregardless"

FTYC - you're english is excellent...I never would have guessed that you are not a native speaker.

I liked FTYC's comments about non-english speakers.  I spent a month in Mexico mangling the spanish language, but people still understood what I meant most of the time.  I had a teacher tell me "word's are only as important as the message they convey".  Words are our slaves not our masters so I gave up on caring how other people use words...except "Literally".  If you use the word literally incorrectly then you mean figuratively, which is the complete opposite.  I still can't get past that one.

I have ran irregardless of what you think.

TT, isn't it "thank", like, "I have ran irregardless of what you thank", I mean, literally?

So hard to understand all you people that can't use the English language correct.
