Lake Tahoe Vacation? (Read 34 times)

DW turns 50 and DD#2 turn 21 this summer, so looking to meet our Pacific NW kids for a vacation.  DW suggested Lake Tahoe.

So I knew there a re a few on this forum that live near or at least vacation in the area (Sue, etc.).  Where is good area to stay, where would we fly into (Reno?), any suggestions for real estate companies or VRBO.  Looking to get at least a 5 BR house since we'll have all the kids and their significant others.

Kings beach area was recommended to us, but I know 0% about the area.

I have a superstition about Lake Tahoe.  Everyone I know who has gone there has ended up sick, or has had someone in their party get sick.  I'm not a superstitious person, but I won't go to Tahoe because of this.  If you go, stay healthy!

I am more familiar with the Truckee area since we normally go in winter; however, a number of friends have homes up there and spend a lot of the summer up in Tahoe so I can ask around.

Kings Beach can be busy so a number of our friends rent in Incline Village (get a rental with beach access). Truckee with the town, Squaw and Northstar villages have lots of activity as well.

Yes , fly to Reno .

Incline Village ( Nevada ) is very pretty and very low key , less carnival like has a supermarket  . State Park with public access to the Lake , this is the area with the iconic pictures of rocks in the Lake at Sand Harbor .

Stateline/ S. Lake Tahoe are the biggest cities with casinos and all the usual tourist stuff as well as stuff you would find in regular towns ( supermarkets etc...) . Public Beaches

Kings Beach to Tahoe City , West Shore area - can be crazy busy and hard to get around . Does have public beaches .

Just do a search for Lake Tahoe rentals you should be able to come up with lots of choices .

Anywhere area you choose will be exceptionally pretty . Do most of your supply shopping in Reno or Carson City . All areas have access to trails either instant or a short drive .

Thanks for the input.  This will be fun trying to coordinate the family and boy/girlfriends coming from different directions.

Living in Gettysburg, we tend to go for low key vs tourist traps.

Try Incline Village first then the East Shore - Cave Rock , Zephyr Cove . These will be more low key . Incline does have 1 casino and nice places to eat but no fast food at all . On the West Shore low key would be Tahoma no supermarkets or fast food  . The whole area can be crazy in the summer . Reno is 35 minutes from Incline Village,  the West Shore and S. Lake Tahoe areas 1 hour .

Tahoe is very pretty, have a great trip.  My experience there won't be any help since I slept in my car at a couple different trail heads. and never got a room or even a campsite.

What I know about Lake Tahoe I saw from the rim trail.  We did start a run at Echo Lake and their was a lodge there; http://echochalet.com/

It would be a great place to stay as it is right on the PCT and Rim Trail.  These trails head into desolation wilderness which was one of my favorite runs on the rim trail.  Even if you do not stay at Echo Lake you must do a hike into Desolation to Velma Lakes...there's a trail head in a campground that is across the road from the vista point at emerald bay.  As Valerie stated Sand Harbor is a very cool beach so that is a must for the day trip.  It's a very popular place in the summer (too many people for me) but also very beautiful!

If you want to hit Tahoe and somewhere else I would suggest Gold Lake http://www.goldlakelodge.com/ very pretty place to explore.  Maybe after the kids leave.  You could drive the 89, 49 to 20 loop.  That would take you through Sierraville, Downieville, Nevada City (where I would take you on my favorite trail for a run ) and Donner Lake.
