Fire on the Mountain Fridailies (Read 40 times)

dpc3

Morning Folks, hope all is well. We officially have started of the Wildfire season here in NM and initial evidence suggests it was intentionally set, sweet right!  We are drier then a popcorn fart and some idiot wants a fire. Anyway they have water drops going and I am sure hand crews are on the scene but I think I am going to avoid the high country this weekend, was planning on going up Pino Canyon, oh well. The fire was started around the trail head of Albuquerque's famous La Luz trail head.  Enough of me how you doin?

I got caught reading a funny Cross-fit rant and comments this morning posted by Snowdenrun so I am planning on a lunch time run of some undisclosed distance.

Morning Trailers.  ^ sorry to hear that, I hiked in the Gila several years ago and from what I understand, last years fires have totally devasted that area Sad

Just got back from our annual inservice training and am proud to say that our region took home the traveling shooting trophy- we had a three years running where it stayed at our headquarters, but the last three years we ended up in second place to three different regions- now it's "home"!

We also took the new this year fitness trophy- a timed obstacle course w/ times averaged for each region- we were nearly 20 seconds ahead of the second place region (helps that I have a bunch of young guys Big grin)

      strength training this evening

qotd: do you find your water consumption less the longer you've been running?  my 20 oz bottle used to last me on average (obviously temps impact this usage) a little over an hour, now it's closer to two- body now making more efficient use of water?????

I'm glad I'm not the only one who got sucked into those comments...they are WAY better than the article itself! I just lost about an hour of my morning haha.

Today I'll probably do a couple easy miles after work. Still taking it pretty easy from last Saturday's marathon. Hiking/camping on the AT this weekend and it's going to be FABULOUSLY gorgeous all weekend.

AT Runner - I think I'll be out near your neck of the woods *by that I mean general western area of the AT in PA*  You anywhere near Clark Valley?

QOTD: No, because I developed asthma last spring, and I've been running for about 5 years. Water tends to help prevent/stop asthma attacks, especially in the heat, so I think I tend to drink more because of that. When it's not hot or humid, I would say I probably drink less water than I used to.

dpc3, Thanks for the GD link.  My musician son and non-musician oldest DD are huge Dead fans.  They travel all over to see Phish and Further concerts.  I think I even saw the Dead play in 1978.

Now as far as running, SRD today for me.  B2B long runs planned for this weekend.  I feel 100% now, finally.

QOTD:  My water consumption changes with the temperature and my sweat.  Yesterday I drank more than I have been since temps were around 70 degrees and I was sweating a lot.

          “Paralysis-to-50k” training plan is underway!

The pooch and I had a great 8 mile trail run on some tough trails. The weather was once again perfect.

QOTD: I don't take water on my run unless it will be over 3 hours unless it is very hot.  I used to take water for shorter runs, so I guess the answer is yes.

dpc3- darn fire getting in the way of a beautiful planned run. Your more then welcome to move to the east coast and get away from all that! Enjoy the run anyway.

mt- congrats on bringing the 'ship back to your office. Enjoy the XT

TnC- jealous of your weekend plans. Sounds like a blast. Have a great time

AT- glad your feeling 100% enjoy the B2B this weekend

One last SRD for me. My toenail-less feet are finally feeling good. They are almost all dried up. I'm taking one last SRD. I'll get some miles in this weekend.

              TGIF!

qotd: I have no idea. I just drink when I'm thirsty, never really kept track.

                Morning all, Happy Friday!

I got out for 4 miles yesterday, followed by 4 on the bike.  Too beautiful outside to be indoors.  Today, I brought my trail shoes to work and I'll do a nice easy 9 mile loop to celebrate my weekend freedom.  I might even sneak away early.

QOTD: I have been guilty of being "that guy" running with a 22oz handheld at the local 5k.  I like having water with me.  I've done runs over 1.5 hours with nothing, but I generally prefer to carry water.  I'm sure I drink less (water) than I used to, but I don't like to be thirsty.

Clarks Valley is closer to boyjame.  I'm an hour or so south of that near the MD line..  You'll be on a very nice part of the AT near the Susquehanna River with some great vistas.  Troegs Brewery is in Hershey, PA if you are looking for some fluid replacement.  Have a great time.

What shelter are you staying at overnight?

Here is the shelter at Rausch Gap.

Ah I see. There's about 8 of us, and we're kind of cheating by parking one car halfway through so we can leave all of our stuff in the car (not TRUE backpacking....) We're gonna camp in a clearing instead of a shelter so we can leave plenty of room in the shelters for thru/section hikers.

Tomorrow's Miwok Fun starts at 3:00 am as I meet my runner at the park and ride.  The morning is forecast to be 48 degrees then hit a high of 74 in Mill Valley at noon.  Then drop to 68 at 6pm.

I'd say being on the coast tomorrow is about the best place in California to run.

QOTD:  Yes my water intake does decrease as I find my endurance improving.

3.25 miles this morning.  I am so close to calling a specialist (podiatrist).  I am not sure why I am hesitating.  I just need to do it.

TnC - Clarks Valley is fairly close to me.  I do some running in through there.  There are some nice climbs (and downhill) on side trails in the area of Rt 325.  That portion of the AT is fairly rocky - well ok most of the AT in PA is rocky so I guess that is not saying much.  Let me know if you have any questions about that area.  Have fun.  Looks like a perfect weather weekend for it all.

QOTD: I have noticed that I don't need as much water.  Either my body really doesn't need it or it's a mental thing.

Have a great weekend everyone! (anyone racing?)

Did 4 miles this morning.   We're having a cool front today and tomorrow, great running weather for around here.  It was 48* this morning and tomorrow it'll be a bit cooler (good for my long run tomorow) !!!!  I think both days will set low temp records for the month of May in TX.

dpc3: totally sucks about intentionally set fires.  WTF !!!

qotd: I would say that I am about the same or perhaps a bit less.  But down here in TX if you go too light on the fluids you'll feel it late in long runs by light headedness or cramping...

Thanks for the tips, Boyjame!  I've done a few sections of PA and NJ this spring, and yes, they all seem to be pretty rocky thus far Smile

Today light biking and strength training. Yesterday San Francisco's 14 most beautiful miles: Golden Gate park, college beach bods on the sunny beaches, Golden Gate park, and Presidio.

I was worried about heel and lower back soreness, but my only pain is sunburn on my bald spot. I didn't put sunscreen there because I planned to run with a hat. When I couldn't find the hat I went for the 80's look: sunglasses and headband. Unfortunately I forgot to spray up on top after that shift. All in all, yesterday was fantastic and very motivating.

EDIT: QOTD: I feel the need to drink less, and I'm becoming less tolerant to sloshing in my stomach. However, I believe I still need as much water. It look me quite a long time to re-hydrate after yesterday's run in the heat.

                                Happy Friday all!

Stupid fires(and fire starters)! We need rain badly! Could be a long summer if they close down the forest due to the high fire danger, makes it tough for a trail runner.... I was looking forward to possibly heading up the mountain this weekend after way to long in the flats, but looks like it will depend on the fire now. Sounds like they are getting it under control, but could get ugly if the wind kicks up.

5 miles along the river trail for the dog and I last night, pushing DS in the stroller. Calf got a little tight towards the end but feels fine today, so I think its time to start kicking up the mileage a bit.

QOTD: Haven't really noticed a trend. I like to have plenty of water along most of the time since it is so dry here in the desert. I typically don't need a lot unless its hot but its nice to keep the mouth and throat moist.
