Trail Monster
I'm getting ready to start experimenting with lights for Burning River. I have a small Fenix flashlight that I like but dies quickly (4 hours or so). I also have a no-name headlamp I like but I also use it for work and its hard to change the batteries which cost me a lot of time at Oil Creek. So give me some long lasting, easy to change batteries, not super heavy options! Thanks!

4/20 North Coast 24 Hour
7/27 Burning RIver 100M
8/24 Baker 50M
10/5 Oil Creek (distance to be determined)

Uh oh... now what?
Does the Fenix has a power level option? Four hours (or so) seems really
fast. I have several different brands of handheld lights and they are all good
for thirty or forty hours. I rarely put them on high beams, but even that will
last for longer than four hours (10 LEDs, 3 AA batteries).
How old is your headlamp? I did not need one, but there was a sale on at
REI when we were there so..... now I have a new headlamp. Wow!!!
Bright, much brighter and a set of batteries (on high beam) is supposed
to be around thirty hours. I'll go find it ... and post name/model.

Thanks! I think my Fenix is a screw up. I can't find an adjustment knob.
Black Diamond Spot is a winner. Has low beams and high beam.
3-AAA batteries. Has a good long life and a battery indicator to show how much juice you have.
never give up elevation until you have to
Awesome! Thanks!
Something to consider also is the type of battery - lithiums generally last a lot longer than alkaline, and perform better in the cold.
I've got a BD Spot (new version last year, iirc, which is much better than the older version, which I also have) and BD Storm that I'm using. The Storm's high power is better than the Spot's high power, but it's low beam seems more appropriate for use in camp, I think, while the Spot's low beam is still a somewhat useful for running on snow. I think that's consistent with specs. But over time, I reserve the right to change my mind.
Storm is more rugged with a screw closure for the battery compartment (4AAA). I don't think I'd want to change batteries in either one of them at -18F in the dark, even with having a spare light to use for the change. For me, those compartments don't open easily even with bare fingers. When it's warm, we generally don't need lights for long (61N latitude).

I also have a newer BD Spot, nice light lamp w/ adjustable output, easy to change batteries and very good output on the high end (90 lumens)
I agree that the extra $ spent on lithiums is worth it, especially w/ colder conditions
I recent bought a BD Sprinter to keep in my truck, it's rechargeable w/ a USB port (which amazingly new vehicles come w/ ) only burns 6 hours at high, but that's sufficient for it's intentions

I saw the new Fenix handheld with the 740 lumen XM-L LED last night.
Holy. Shit.
Thanks all! I think I'll pick up a BD spot and a second Fenix for my night playtime!

I have the Petzl Myo RXP and it's pretty awesome. I have a Fenix LD-20 handheld and it too is pretty awesome.

What the hell would you do with 740 lumens?!
I also have the Fenix LD-20 and keeping it on high (180 lumens or something) while pacing Scrapster all night at Sawtooth made me nauseous to have a light that bright. I ended up turning it down to low or medium in combination with my headlamp and it worked perfectly.
Running is dumb.
How about comfort? Granted I have a cheap coleman headlamp but it's not very comfortable on my forehead after about 10 minutes.
I may be slow but I never quit.
Weld !!

What she said. what is the ideal clunk to lumes ratio.
Never run, if you want to never run, don't start because you'll never stop.
Why the hell are you welding on the trail, fatty?!
