Doyen of the Downs? (Read 104 times)

"Race Across The Sky"

    Anyone doing it this year?

    Jerry?

    Should I do it?

What should I expect?  Jerry - I think you had an elevation profile at some point?

My "coach" has recently moved back from Northern Ireland to England and has mentioned that he is going to do it as part of his plan to get back into ultras.  (He has previously run a 2:50 50km, which was the World Record at the time).  It would be good to run it with him (read: behind him!) and meet him at last.

What was the secret, they wanted to know; in a thousand different ways they wanted to know The Secret. And not one of them was prepared, truly prepared to believe that it had not so much to do with chemicals and zippy mental tricks as with that most unprofound and sometimes heart-rending process of removing, molecule by molecule, the very tough rubber that comprised the bottoms of his training shoes. The Trial of Miles; Miles of Trials

Doyen of the Downs....my first ever run past 26.2 miles and it was glorious but only because the weather was with us i.e not raining.

It is a tough race, lots of hill, some very hard and very enjoyable, beware the marshes. I and others have written a lot about the run...see here

I am not sure what you want out of a race Tom but there are places where it is nigh on impossible to run as you are on muddy river banks, marshes, it is not marshalled (use of arrows) CP's are basic (not a problem if you are expecting it) which have bananas, biscuits and cold water.

The jury is out if I am to do it this year I am finding it hard to justify the continual expenditure of my runs and at £36 it is moving to the expensive end of the market and that doesn't include petrol and day expense.

I only have one more challenge on my cards between now and the New Year and that is  the Gatliff 50 km (£7.00) which is entry on the day. I will be seeing George tomorrow and will have a chat as we haven't chatted properly for 3 weeks and see what our plans may be.

In conclusion, a lovely run but there are cheaper ones out there

      "Race Across The Sky"

        I have entered.

        Sounds right up my street.

What do I want from the run?  I guess.... a hard XC race.  Aim will be for sub 4.  Will be happy with anything under 4:30.

I was a bit surprised that the price was so high.

The 24hr race (with the enormous logistical and support burden for the organiser) was only £27 to enter....

Extreme Running are a tad expensive but their runs are superb, I have run with Dennis and Mark one Sunday and they are really brilliant blokes and love their sport.

I am going to see how Beachy goes tomorrow to get an indicative time as we took DotD very carefully last year being our first. The marshes are an absolute blast just don't fall in
