Even though I am miserable with my busted/bruised big toe I have just received an email from Smiling Sid. It appears my application has been accepted and so has Purdey's (after poor ol' Sid had to collect it) So resting up now, just soaked my toe in ice, had a hot bath to open the capillaries and now icing it again.

Great news. Shit news about your toe. I will have to buy Smiler a beer - bloody Royal Mail and their letter sizes! Jerry - we will have to chat about our support strategy - do you know if Smiler has lap counters or do we have to provide our own? Pam Storey has volunteered to do mine.... told her I'd let her know. I am definitely going for the course record. I think that 40 is achievable for me - but I'm still uncertain about "that hill".

I think he has a team that will count for multiple individuals. When Pam offered to "do me" she said she is also counting for her beau, Gil.

Tom, here is the route (my guess) Faversham Ultra Do you know if there will be change in direction at any stage? Clockwise or anti-clockwise? You can see that there is a "hump" in the southern section away from the sports field, steeper near the bowls club so it could eat away at the old legs more if anti-clockwise.

Confirmed. Hurrah. Haven't checked out all of the other competitor yet! I see that Robin Gardner is doing the marathon not the 6hr - that is a relief - he is the chap who almost beat me at Crawley. I think you should place quite well in this race Jerry! Smile

I have heard rumours that another member from my club is a late entry, I don't know him personally but he specialises in ultras so he may be a dark horse as I don't know his experience. I am taking this one reasonably serious and was discussing strategy last night, mainly food, pace and clothing. I will be unsupported so will be writing a big list and clipboarding it on my own table. When I think about this I am pretty well fired up and 8 weeks will be more than enough time to really knuckle down especially after my recent marathon time.

Me too. I am going to race this one fairly hard. I am actually considering dropping from the Ridgeway, or only running it for fun, as it is just 6 weeks from my goal race. I certainly won't be going out that hard but it would be nice to try and go for a reasonably good marathon time but don't want to bugger up my later splits. So I am erring towards the tortoise approach and plod at a set pace. I have just knocked up a quick excel sheet and if you "blat" out at 8:00 min pace you are projected to be in at 45 miles (obviously not vectoring in rest and walking breaks) In my heart of hearts and if I am totally truthful I would like to get very close to 40 miles by the end but that would mean me doing an average 9:00 min/mile which will have to be more 8:30-8:45 pace....we'll see

Realistically starting at 8:00 pace will probably mean I get about 40 - 42 miles if I factor in walking breaks and slowing down etc. 42 is my goal. If I were fitter I would love to have a crack at 50 in 6hrs - but this is a long way beyond me at the moment.

Hi Jerry / Purdey / Celtic Tiger This looks interesting, are entries still available. Was scheduling to rest in June/July but this looks good fun. As you said Jerry, i need to stop doing those road mara's and get back to the Ultras. Hope everyone is in good health, got a little HM in Wokingham on Sunday and then South Downs Mara 13th June (yes i know its 'only' a Mara but it is off road). So could just carry on from there with the training. David

2011 Goals - Run 2 x 100+ mile races (16+17/04/11 London Mara x 4 - 22hrs8mins)

5K: Sub 19 (24/07/11 - Bushy Park 18:55)

10K: Sub 41 (19/03/11 40:50 - 2nd 10k of below race)

Half Mara: Sub 1:32 (19/03/11 Dorney Lake 1:26.50)

Mara: Sub 3:15 (on a road course)

Hi David I should imagine there is a waiting list now but you could make a phone call to "Smiling" Sid Details here (PDF) There were 4 places free as of yesterday on the ultra and I know one of those has been taken up by one of my club guys (unbeknownst to me) Good luck, it would great to see you again, Celtic Tiger is doing the South Downs as his Birthday "Treat" Roll eyes
