      Ha!

      See you there!

What was the secret, they wanted to know; in a thousand different ways they wanted to know The Secret. And not one of them was prepared, truly prepared to believe that it had not so much to do with chemicals and zippy mental tricks as with that most unprofound and sometimes heart-rending process of removing, molecule by molecule, the very tough rubber that comprised the bottoms of his training shoes. The Trial of Miles; Miles of Trials

Crikey...you came under the radar! Well I suppose I did too as I only emailed Denis on  Wednesday evening

It is going to be a BIG call at Arundel as I am doing a 50km this Saturday so I don't think I will beat my time from last year

Will still be happy with anything under 4:30 I think.

I have just realised that I don't actually know anything about the Doyen....

Does it start from Arundel Castle itself?  IE if I can navigate to the castle, can I easily find the start?

Would love to, but have done 2 Races and been to Twickenham to see the Rugby in the last 2 weeks so had to promise my wife no more events until C2C. However i have dropped the 'thinking of a 100miler next year' into conversation a couple of times and she seems to be less against it once i explained it wouldn't be much more training than L2B .

Have a great run, hopefully wont be as cold as last year, nice cool refreshing dip in the marsh to look forward to........ Although have you not got the 50km as well very soon, big mileage close together Mr Jerry, training must be going well. Are you looking to race hard on the 50k as i think you mentioned you might do so?

                    2011 Goals - Run 2 x 100+ mile races (16+17/04/11 London Mara x 4 - 22hrs8mins)

                    5K: Sub 19 (24/07/11 - Bushy Park 18:55)

                    10K: Sub 41 (19/03/11 40:50 - 2nd 10k of below race)

Half Mara: Sub 1:32 (19/03/11 Dorney Lake 1:26.50)

Mara: Sub 3:15 (on a road course)

I have it on good authority that the Gatliff is very hard as it is in thye heart of the downs and I have a feeling the Surrey Hills will feature large in the event . We are still going to run it as a race but I have been warned don't expect less that 6:30 hours but we will do our best to get in the top 10

                        Best of luck.

On a seperate issue, i know you have a headtorch and i have recently purchased a Tikka Plus 2 headtorch, which makes life a lot easier on my evening runs home from work. Just wondered if it was worth upgrading to XP 2 as i bought the Tikka on the spur of the moment and the XP 2 is now the same price but 20% more lumens and a lens filter. Just wondered if you had any advice.

Mara: Sub 3:15 (on a road course)

I absolutely love my Tikka XP although I wish it had an "overhead" strap instead of just one around the head as it does slip down my forehead so I have to tighten it up when not wearing my Buff.

Unlike your Tikka Plus 2 mine does not have a red filter that does have its benefits especially when reading Garmins and maps.

Tikka XP has a boost button and the diffuser filter is particularly good as its fits the field of vision almost perfectly ( if not somewhat unnervingly)

As an aside I have quickly learnt that during cold weather the condensation from my breath can float into the beam of the light and temporarily obscure my forward view which is quite dangerous on rough or woodland terrain so to counteract the problem I wear my Buff around my neck and then pull it up over my mouth to capture the moisture.

I reckon we have swings and roundabout issue here, you have an excellent lightweight torch with red light capability (excellent for night navigation) where I have a slightly more powerful light with a slightly more reach. If we put it into perspective we really only need 15-20 feet of light in front of us when night running so we can check trip hazards and your light does more than enough with 35 metres on high and 13 metres on low.....I'd spend the money you have saved on a Buff

Good call Jerry, as you say i have more than enough light for my needs and I have been umming and arring about a Buff for a while, think it will go on the Xmas list to Santa.

Best of luck for Gatliff, look forward to reading your race report, which are always very detailed. I never manage to remember that much detail other than starting and finishing, do you take short hand notes on the way round or something???????

One of my favourite quotes I overheard today at the Doyen between a couple of walkers

Woman " They must have to be terribly fit to do it"

Man "More like F&%king mad if you ask me"
