David

I will be running with 2 other guys from our club we have not "agreed" a pace at the moment but I have a feeling the 90-120 min pace will prevail

Your kit seems sensible but as we have a a plethora of support we are planning to go light all the way. I will be carrying

  • enough gels/chew bars/jaffa cakes to a max of 450 calories per stage
  • phone
  • map and compass
  • 2 x 500 ml bottles
  • Mini first aid kit with space blanket
  • Phone
  • Icecream money

The calories are based on 300 cals/hour

This week is indeed the last and longest mile week but I will be away for the weekend so will be doing my last long run on Monday and will be going to run for about 4 hours, no route, no fixed distance just run and enjoy it. After that there is a lovely 3 week taper which will all about TLC to my legs and wounds.

Maybe we should meet up and we could go through stage 2 together, stage 1 is a piece of piss as it is all road. Let me get my diary together and I will PM you with some dates.

Hi Jerry

Sounds great, next week is very difficult so if we could look at w/c 7th Sept that would be great.

Hi Purdey

Thanks for the reply.

Socks i use have so far (upto 5hrs off road) not given me any major blisters so i may be able to ditch these, probably more psychological than physical benefit, ditto the t-shirt.

Gels - You are probably right, 10+hrs at minimum of 2 gels per hour = lots of gels

I know everyone is different but in your opinion is the rest of the kit list about right then?

Thanks for the advice. I also took stock of your advice when i suggested a 40mile training run, i have instead concentrated on doing a higher weekly mileage (which is something advocated by Scott Weber - Ultra Endurance Coach), which, touch wood seems to be going well.

How are things going with you, i believe you have the 24hrs soon.

David,

The rest of it looks spot on - especially if you are unsupported.  Glad to see some solid foods in there - aim to eat these fairly eary (about 1/2 way ish) as your body may not tolerate solids later on.

Yes - things going ok for me, despite some achilles problems which have lingered, several 100mi + weeks on the trot now.  24hr race is 17/18 Oct - so just a few hard weeks left and then a 2 wk taper.

Await reports from Brighton from you and Jerry with eager anticipation.

Happy running.

Nothing to say at the moment.

I have a fixation in my mind that I want to eat a bowl of Shreddies at about 20 miles just to get some solids in me but may just stick to my trusty my Sainsbury ready made banana milkshake but I am definitely going to have some corned beef sandwiches without the crusts at CP3, about 27 miles in but won't fall foul of the "Compton 40 Cheesy Baked Potato" incident again

How is the taper going Jerry? Doing some flying 50m sprints last night on my easy run and managed to overextend my right leg. Result was a slight twinge in the upper thigh/groin area which feels 90% ok to-day so only an easyish 10k tonight, think i might stop any fast stuff now until after L2B .

What sort of distance will your longest run be this week, i had planned a 10 to 11miler. Don't think we will get round to meeting up before the race as previously planned, but maybe we can swap mobile no's on the day and plan some runs in prep for Country to Capital. I assume you will be wearing your usual Buff next sunday?

Hi David

I have had a really shitty day today so may pop out for a run up to the woods and back (about 5 miles) just to get some wind in my hair and then repeat that tomorrow. Then my "long" run on Sunday which has been discussed will be for 90 minutes. We will only wear watches, no Garmins and run for the fun of it at a very easy pace.

Last run on Tuesday next week (10km)

As for the Buff, I will be wearing my trusty Union Flag and have my newer St George's Flag Buff somewhere on me.

I'll PM you with my Mobile

Great.

Saw your post on your Blog, 45bpm!!!!! Were you in a medically induced coma / had 10pints of cider?

A few years ago when i broke my ankle playing rugby, while in hospital they put a thing on my finger to measure

my pulse and the alarm kept going off whenever i was just dosing off because my resting heart rate was

going below the setting. Lucky i didn't fall asleep and suddenly wake up having had the paddles on my chest

and 20,000volts put through me!

How is the taper going? I see you have been hunting down poor unsuspecting runners of late. I had a funny 8m run last night in that i couldn't get into a comfortable rhythm, bloody tapering obviously interferes with my elite

levels of efficency (if only).

I must have been very, very relaxed at that point or my wife's kit was faulty

As for tapering, here are my thoughts

I was off on a 12 mile run up to Blackheath and back last night just to check out the start and then run up the horrible drag up to the South Circular...did a 1 mile warm up and then a storming 10 mile run with a 1 mile cool down.

Offto the Dogs at Crayford tonight, (first time ever) so no running for me until Sunday when I will pop up to my sisters and give them a Supporter's Briefing.

How is your's going?

Ok, the usual twinges and aches and the worry that i have not done enough training and that i am getting unfit during these easy weeks, when in fact i am re-cuperating and healing.

Night off as well this evening (watch a DVD and eat chocolates on the sofa with the wife), then 10ish miles Sat and and easy 8m on Sunday, which will leave just 2 very easy short runs for next week no more than 5k each.

Still need to sort out my taxi for getting to the start (4.30am pick up ) which will be a few quid, and decide on exact kit and food, gels etc but this will be later in the week, probably as usual the night before.

I don't which bit I am dreading more the idea of getting up at 3.50am to open the door for Mike and George at 4.15 so we can leave at 4.30 am by Taxi or the actual run

My resting heart rate hovers around the 42 mark. Has done for ages. Smile

Good luck with the tapering guys. I feel your pain.
