I went through my running logs, which I have since 2005, and I added up the year's total for each. It was interesting to see what I was doing, how far I was going, and how often I was running. It's strange, because it seems like i'm doing just as much running now as I used to do, but .... well, you'll see: 2007 (projected) - >2,000 (preferably 2007 miles, since that would be cool) 2006 - 1,486 2005 - 709 and for 2008? lets try for >2500. If I get 3000, that's cool too. Bill, do you still have running logs from a long time ago? -Jacob
Jacob, Yeah, I have training logs from my running since 1980. For the most part I've documented everything. There was a small period of time, I think in 1987 that I didn't put mileage into the log, but what can you do. That's why it's good to write something down, if even on a calendar, cuz you just may want it for a trivial reason later. I'll post my yearly totals, but approx. are: I remember that I started at around 1000 to 1500 a year in high school, and then in 1982, when college kicked in, I was up close to 3000. Then it was typically 3100 to 3400 per year through 1987. From then, it went to about 2000 to 3000 a year until about year 2000, then I've been hitting around 800 to 1200 a year. This year looks to be around the 1200 mile mark as well. I know that I'll have around 67,000 miles documented since then. That's kind of a cool figure to throw out there. One thing is for sure. The higher the mileage, the faster my races were. There is a definate connection there. Not that quality doesn't count, but it seems like if the mileage is there, the quality is easier to handle. I'll post the figures tonight. Bill
        Okay, you asked for it: 1980 1079.5 miles 1981 2208 miles 1982 3020 miles 1983 3695 miles 1984 3466 miles 1985 3700.5 miles 1986 3709.5 miles 1987 1845 miles 1988 1913* miles (*undocumented mileage not counted) 1989 2589.5 miles 1990 2918 miles 1991 2928.5 miles 1992 2370 miles 1993 2974.5 miles 1994 3319 miles 1995 3036.5 miles 1996 1343.5 miles 1997 1671.5 miles 1998 2264 miles 1999 1992 miles 2000 693 miles* 2001 1600 miles 2002 3405.5 miles 2003 2578 miles 2004 829.5 miles 2005 1190.5 miles 2006 1354 miles total: 63693 miles (documented)

Wow. That's mighty impressive. 3700 miles in a year is a little over 70 miles/week. that's hardcore. did you just write all this down on a calendar? I hope i didn't make you sit down an add up mileage all afternoon...
I have training logs. One for each year. At the end of each year I put the totals in a 3 ring binder and that's were I have the totals where I can see them at a glance. Why? you may ask. Because sometimes I may want a little motivation. It's all about every angle you can use to find the motivation. Every reason to get out there and run, all add up. That's the key to performance and consistancy. One day at a time, one run at a time. Tomorrow will be four weeks in a row. Then, it's aiming for a fifth. Cool!
