The high expectations shouldn’t be a surprise when looking at the Black Knights’ youthful roster. The squad returns two of its top five finishers from its fifth place finish in the Patriot League Championships last season, including one All-Conference athlete. Leading the charge this season for the Black Knights will be junior Meghan Curran. Curran earned first-team All-Patriot League honors last season with her seventh place finish in the championships. Senior captain Megan Howell will assume the leadership responsibilities this season with the graduation of Kathryn Walker. Howell was the eighth Army finisher in last season’s Patriot League Championship meet and will use her experience to guide the young squad this year. Junior Kristina Heinecke suffered an injury last fall that kept her out of post-season races but bounced back strong during last spring’s outdoor track season when she set personal bests in the 1,500 meters every time she stepped on the track. Heinecke looks to be in the best shape of her career entering the 2007 cross country season. Also returning this year is junior Margaret Kim, the only other upperclassman with post-season experience. Kim finished 82nd in the Patriot League meet in 2006. A talented sophomore class could be the key to success for the squad this season. The foursome of Andrea Filozof, Ashley Morgan, Toni Oestmann and Stephanie Schoeneman has turned heads over the past year. All four women finished in the top 65 at the Patriot League Championships as freshmen. Ashley Morgan led the group with a 32nd place performance followed by Filozof in 56th, Oestmann in 64th and Schoeneman in 65th, respectively. Joining the Black Knights’ squad for the first time this season will be freshmen Courtney Clement, Anne Danczyk, Jessica Davis and Anne Nagy. These four women have impressed the coaching staff throughout preseason camp and will look to move into the scoring positions on the squad. Among the goals for the Army women this season is returning to victory over Navy. “We had a great run of five consecutive wins going,” said head coach Laura Kirchgraber. “Our number one goal this season is to return to that form.” The Black Knights suffered their first loss to Navy in the last six years in 2006. Along with beating Navy, Kirchgraber would like to see the young squad improve on its fifth place finish in the Patriot League. “I think we have the talent to jump into the top three this season,” she says. Kirchgarber would also like to see the Army women return to a top-10 ranking in the Northeast Region. The Black Knights finished 19th in the 37 team field at the NCAA Regionals last season.
