Experimenting with foods (Read 444 times)

Do you guys ever experiment with food and testing? I love fresh corn on the cob and when it comes in season like it is now in Southern Ontario I used to like to make a meal out of it exclusively. I thought that because it is a medium glycemic food that I could get away with it. No Sir! I had six cobs on Saturday with nothing else. tested b4 at 5.5 and one hour after at 9. I like to stay between 4.5 and 8 at all times. I trie it again today with the additon of lean protein and got 5.4 b4 and 8.2 after. I just remembered you Americans are probably wondering what these numbers are? We are celcius here in Canada so you need to multiply my numbers by 18 or divide your numbers by 18 to go the other way -American to Canadian. any way my 1st test was 97.2 b4 and 162(shocking to me) after. The 2nd test was 97.2 b4 and 147.6 (better) after the lean meat Corn combo. So the lean meat combo helped but still a little higher than I would like to see. Normal for me is 81 fasting or b4 meals and 125 after a meal. I did a similar experiment with watermellon and got the same results. So I now know I cannot eat these foods on their own or in too large a portion. Do you guys have any other foods that give you trouble. I generally stay away from high glycemic foods so I have never tested them. I heard we can eat M&Ms with nuts as the nuts slow down the sugar effect. (nuts being low glycemic) Have not tried it yet as the high calories will not help when you are trying to lose weight. I read somewhere that Mars bars are ok too?
    WHO FARTLEK"D ?
I don't know about Mars bars but I have learned my lesson with corn on the cob as well. It is a starchy veggie, with high glycemic factor. We love it here too in western New York. Starflight...I've seen some of that Hoosier corn!!! With a meal, one cob of corn is my limit unless I cut back carbs elsewhere and/or go for a good walk afterwards. I eat lots of green vegatables. Green beans, peas and broccoli with no problems.

Corn, corn on the cob and sweet corn all show a factor of between 50 - 55 on my sources and that should make it a moderate glycemic rating; Thats why it surprised me with the result I got. Watermellon is rated high so I wasn"t surprised. Although most low calorie foods are low glycemic. Watermellon is one of the exceptions. I have yet to understand potatoes. If you eat new potatoes boiled or microwaved they are better for you than Baked, Mashed or French Fried? The only thing I can figure is baking and frying heats them higher and maybe brings out the starch. I also heard a slightly green banana (the way I prefer them anyway) is better than a ripe or over ripe banana? I don't have too much trouble with fruit but then I usually eat them with breakfast of whole grain or high fibre smoothies.(with ground flax seed) I really enjoy Cherries . Strawberries and blueberries (all low GI) however Apples are the only fruit I can eat alone with no effect on my BG.
        WHO FARTLEK"D ?
Wow - You were right about walking it off. (or running in my case) I just did my 2k (1.6mi) by myseif and checked my BG. It went down from 147.6 to 73 after my run. That's kind of borderline low for me (maybe I should eat some more corn lol) That's the first time I have seen exersize bring my BG down in such a short time. Thanks for the tip.You would have laughed if you saw me running tonight as I had to keep one hand on my waistband as my shorts kept falling down. I've been pulling old running clothes out and I guess I am a little slimmer that when I used to run. Oh well, more clothes to the Salvation Army I guess.

And the Hoosier corn is great. Although I seem to have problems growing any. Had 14 truck loads of shredded/chipped trees brought in and when that is composted down I may have better luck! Got great tomatoes though. I can eat corn but limit the amount and my wife makes potatoes that have little effect on the BG. No idea why that is, but I'll take it. Now potatos from a resteraunt? BAD BAD BAD!! There was a Donatos Pizza in town that I could eat if I had fish (high protein) with it and didn't eat too much. Then they closed and I attemped that same trick with Dominos HUGE MISTAKE!!!!! Ran 2.1 miles AFTER that meal and was still 177. Under the ADA guide lines for the max but but well ove what the CDE wants me at (no more than 140 after a meal)

I have a tough time with potatoes in general. I eat them, but only enough to get a good taste and savor the moment!

I had two cobs tonight with chicken breast and a salad and only got a 122. Much better! By the way - what the heck is hoosier corn? Corn for basketball players lol
                WHO FARTLEK"D ?
Starflight would be better to answer your question here. Indiana (Starflight's home) is known as the Hoosier State. The corn grows good and tall there. I'm not even sure just what a hoosier is.

I don't think anyone really knows what hoosier is. And I am a transplant here. My wife was born here. Me? I was born and rasied in The People's Socialist Republic of Kalifornia. I DON'T miss it!!! Well............OK I miss prospecting on weekends, but that is it. OH and the ground here doesn't move! Indiana grows corn and soy beans with some winter wheat thrown in. I had mashed potatos, ham and cantalope for dinner. BG @2 hours was 135. Running i.3 miles sure helped!!! BTW I ran it faster tonight as it took more running to bust the 80% limit and my heart recoverd faster than the night before, so I spent more time running.

Hey Starflight. Your log is starting to look real good and you are sounding more encouraged with each post! You already logged more than half of July's mileage in just the first 9 days of August. Just be careful. Don't get cocky. At our age the old injury troll can sneak up and bite just when you thought you crossed the bridge.

Sure making the attempt not too get cocky!! Last night I finished my mile and was feeling good all around so I ran my cool down and added it to the run. It is .3 miles an ALL dwon hill. Drops 24 feet in .3 miles Another reason there is more mileage so far is that I am really wroking hard to run 6 days a week, whereas last month was more hit and miss. My problem now is when I have pain or soreness, is it because I over did it or is it my body getting used to running?

Starflight It sounds like you are doing great! Obviously, You are improving if you have to run more to keep your pulse rate where you want it. I remember the Hoosier name from an old basketball movie. I think Gene Hackman starred. Sounds like Southern Ontario has a similar soil to yours as we grow all the produce you do plus tobacco. Tobacco is starting to be replaced by Soybeans and Flax. A word of caution. Don"t do too much downhill. Even though it feels easier, it's very jarring on the joints, exposing yourself to injury. We used to do hill work b4 races. We would run up the hill and then walk down. Dave
                          WHO FARTLEK"D ?
Maybe I should add the mileage at the flatter end of course?

That would be safer. It's the steep downhills that are the most concern. The ones where you have to fight from going too fast. Dave
                              WHO FARTLEK"D ?
Not that steep! It looks it but I find it no problem to have a nice easy jog without picking up the pace. Disappointed today as I can't run. The rain doesn't really bother me (spent a full rainy season in Thailand once) but running in a T Storm Warning is NOT a healthy way to run
