Go Far in Fargo
As I expected, last week's tapering and carb loading added on another pound. But overall not bad. I got a new PR for the half marathon of 1:47:27 !!! So, it was worth it. Next week should be better.

    Calorie counting is really doing the trick and just keeps getting easier. Ive been watching my portion size's and eating a lot of fresh fruit and low fat yogurt (thanks Shaunna!). I really cut back on high calorie beverages like milk and juice. Down side is that I am having less energy on my runs . This morning's 6 mile run was tough. I had no breakfast, and hadn't eaten since 4:00 yesterday afternoon. I guess I burned a lot of fat on this run! This week marks the official start of my marathon training. The plan is to do 30 miles this week - M:6, Tu:4, W:7, Th:4, Sa:9.

    Wow, WTG Jeff! Greg, nice PR!! Stephen.. you are my inspiration to stick with this.

    I am still up a 1 pound despite calorie counting ( I am counting everything I swear, I just don't get why I'm gaining) and have been stuck at this number for the past 5 days. I don't really trust the program I was using as it says my BMR is around 2550 calories, so I am going back to fitday and am going to aim for 1700 calories a day regardless of how much I burn with excercise. I think my BMR is around 1700 and AMR is around 2200, so that should be at least a pound a week loss.

    Ok, so I undid some of the "conference damage".
    I ate at the higher range of my calories and only ran one day last week due to the tendon pain/sprain.
    Sooo ... calorie counting it is and I think I can run with careful stretching, warmup and cooldown. Easy run only.

    Hi Shaunna,

    Don’t get discouraged. Fluctuations in your water weight can easily mask fat loss. I have had poor eating habits and been overweight for a very long time, and if I can do it anyone can.

    I ran your numbers, and I think your BMR estimate is high (25 years old, 5’9”, 157 lbs ):

    bmr = 1537 calories (see http://www.fitwatch.com/qkcalc/bmr.html)

    I use sedentary lifestyle for calculation of AMR, and count the exercise separately. For you, this would be:

    amr = 1844 calories (see http://www.fitwatch.com/qkcalc/tdcn.html) (note this is just 1.2 times your BMR)

    I use this number as an upper limit of my calorie intake. So I think 1700 calories for you sounds good.

    Now for the calories-burned side of the energy balance.

    Last week you ran 20.4 miles in 3.5 hours or 5.8 miles/hour.

    calories burned per hour of running (157 lbs @ 5.8 mph) = 689 calories (see http://www.runtheplanet.com/resources/tools/calculators/caloriecounter.asp)

    Plugging these numbers into the formula from my web site, and solving for hours-per-week of running (HPW), assuming a desired 1 pound of loss per week:

    CPD = AMR + (CPH * HPW / 7) - 500 * PPW
    CPD = 1844 + (689 * HPW / 7) – 500 * 1
    CPD = 1344 + 98.4 * HPW
    HPW = (CPD – 1344)/98.4
    HPW = (1700 – 1344)/98.4 = 3.6 hours per week

    So, with an intake of 1700 calories, you will need to run 3.6 hours per week at an average speed of 5.8 miles per hour to lose 1 pound of fat per week. This amounts to running, for example, 5 out of 7 days, for 44 minutes at a pop. Note if your doing other exercise instead of running, you will likely have to exercise more, for most exercises burn less calories than running. You’re not cross-country skiing uphill are you? Smile If you’re doing other things on top of 3.6 hours of running, that’s even better.

    Stick with it a few more weeks, and I’m sure you’ll see results.

    Regards,
    123
