Morning folks!!
I must be loving this swimming thing. It was a night of little sleep, 4 hours.
It's 7am with a "feels like" of -15F and i'm off to the pool!
Our good friend from here at home, who has been training in our local temps, finished in
3:17:04 and 115th OVERALL at Miami ING Marathon yesterday!!! Go James!!!!!!!
Have a good one! BBL!!
meh
Good morning! I have 8 w/5x600m @5K pace on the schedule today but I'm probably going to swap that run with the 12 scheduled for tomorrow. I'm at home today and in the office tomorrow and finding time for a 12 mile run on Tuesdays is always tough.
Beth - Enjoy your swim and congrats to your zippy fast friend!

Marine Corps Marathon (10/27) - Goal: ?
This girl is on fire.
Good morning! Bring on February!
We have freezing rain this morning and the roads/sidewalks might get bad. I'm scheduled to do 9 miles with 6x600 @ 5K pace but I'm not sure I want to run that outside if it's slippery. I'm also not sure about doing it on the treadmill - intervals are a little annoying on the machines at my gym since I would have to repeatedly push the "up" and "down" buttons rather than being able to enter the desired speed. I might do one of my medium runs instead. I don't feel that tired from Saturday and I got pretty good sleep last night, so it seems doable.
Just B.S., Enjoy the pool. When does it tend to warm up (above freezing) for you all?
Scott, That's my workout, too. I'm debating switching it around, too...

Damaris Runs with Asthma
Beth...You little fish! Have a great swim. That's a great effort by your friend dealing with that kind of temperature difference.
Scott...Glad you got a little help figuring out dad's age! Both of those runs look like good ones...I think they'll work on a Mon. or Tue.
Julia...January has a few more miles to be laid down...don't steal them from me yet! That's a tough workout you have if it's slippery. I always try to find somewhere that I don't have to make any turns so I at least can reduce the chance of falling. Whichever one you did, hope it was good.
Docket...Aww, another rest day? haha. Teasing. I think you deserve a month of rest. Too bad you have a marathon in two weeks!
I'm looking at 6 recovery miles today around lunch. We had an ice storm earlier and now it's raining, so I didn't want to mess with that. I'm not worried about the miles because I'm going to end up running twice both Tuesday and Wednesday. The temps are warming up for a few days, and we'll actually get into the 50s Tue/Wed before it takes a dive back to the teens. Exciting!
PRs: Marathon (2:56xx; '13) Half (1:25xx; '12) 10k (40:26; '11) 5mi (29:23; '13) 5k (18:31; '11)
Ok, catching up since Friday.
Saturday 5k came in at 25:48.9. Fastest in the last several years. My time keeps dropping. Came in 3/21 in age group, but didn't hang around for the trophy. I would have just thrown it away anyway. Plus it takes a long time to get down to my age group. The nbr 2 guy finished 3.3 seconds in front of me. Race only had around 1000 entrants, down about 50% from last year. It turns out there was a competing race this year in downtown Atlanta.
Saturday was 3wu+10@MP+3cd. Held the MP OK, but then kept it up for the 3cd since that was downhill anyway. It turns out that the average for the entire 16 was under MP. This is also the best I've done in about three years. Definitely liking this Hanson plan.
Regarding running with music ---- I use the music as a metronome. I run listening to PODRunner music which I've modified to be at a certain cadence. For example, for the 5k I was listening to electro music with a cadence of 91 strides per minute (or 182 steps per minute). It keeps my pace regular. Without that I find that my cadence graph looks like a San Francisco seismograph during an earthquake. I find that keeping a steady cadence uses less energy.
For my 16 miler yesterday I was using a cadence of 88 strides per minute (or 176 steps per minute). For the three warmup miles I just ignored the beat, but after the 3wu I started running in step with the beat. As I become more fit and my pace gets faster I expect this will increase to 90/180.
This morning was just 8 easy miles with 8 strides. Seemed chillier than it should have been for 42F, but we are supposed to get a nice warmup for a few days.
I was MIA yesterday and took a day off after 23 straight. Did go see Lincoln. I thought it was good. Not sure about Best Picture material, but I guess so with all the other crap that's out there. DW enjoyed it, but being the expert on that era did find a few things questionable about it.
WC below zero again, so back to the TM for another fast 10. I ran it at near goal MP which is sub 7. I need to stop that! Getting slammed at work.
Julia--Although I have been working longer hours with the temp promotion, I am basically Monday-Friday. It's been easier because all of my runs on the weekdays are in the early mornings. Before the bump up, I worked some evenings and weekends. I can sleep late on the weekends, knowing that I can go later when it warms up. The mileage is there and the TM has been good to get up to MP which I don't achieve on the roads.
Hey all! I've got a spinning workout on my trainer today. That's good since the kids are home from school. It's an in teacher work day. I can't wait for my Monday's to be mine again. I wanted to go to the LRS today for some trail shoes but not sure I feel like dragging the kiddo's along with me. My swim yesterday was great. I'm so glad I went. It was one of those swims where it felt easy. 1700 yards total with 850 yards consistent. The rest consisted of drills and whatnot. My shoulder didn't bother me at all and in fact, it felt good. I think it stretched some muscles out.
Scott - Lol about dad's age. My mom's birthday is tomorrow and I think she'll be 65 but I'm not positive. I'm afraid to ask.
Beth - Great job on keeping up the swimming! Your consistency is going to pay off. Congrats to your friend.
Julia - I say switch away on the workout. Sometimes you have to do what's best given the circumstances. Funny how we're all different though. I like doing intervals on the tm because the constant speed/incline changes keep me distracted from the fact I'm on the darn tm.
Damaris - Good luck at the asthma docotr. Hope it's good news.
SIAR - Careful out there in that weather. You've been doing a lot of those doubles lately, haven't you?
RVD - Congrats on the AG win in your 5K and the dropping finish time. That's great! Although, gasp, you would throw the award away! I cherish my AG awards because they are so few and far between. lol
Marco - I think you deserved a day of rest. I heard Lincoln was good. It must be interesting seeing films about history with your dw.
Okay, hello to all that follow! I need to workout and decide if I'm braving the LRS with kids in tow.

6.44 miles done on the slow end of easy pace. It's funny, all last week I ran in single digit temps, often in snow and high winds, and I was thrilled to do it. Today, you give me 41 degrees and mist and I can barely bring myself to get out there. The moral of the story is...I hate running in the wet!
RVD...Great job at your 5k! Decreasing times are always exciting to see. Those are some killer miles and workouts you're getting in. With all that good work the race times should continue to drop. As for the music...I suppose beats per minute would work for someone that has any kind of a musical ear.
Marco...Glad you finally made it to see Lincoln. I could see how your wife would be able to spot some inaccuracies in the movie. Killer MP miles on the TM for you.
Pressing...I'm very impressed with your swimming. You'll be doing an olympic distance before you know it! I think I've probably been doing one double a week for the last 2 months. I am considering adding a second one now. Tomorrow is just a second run to get some miles in with a friend I haven't seen in a while though, and they'll be nice and easy for me. Did you make it to the LRS? It's amazing the progress that trail shoes have made from even a few years back - lots of good options out there.
Julia...Those conditions sound scary. Glad you were able to get back on the mill and get it done in time before work.
D...Three, right! Feel better.
B.S.: Glad you're enjoying the swimming!
Scott: Hope you had a nice 12.
RVD: Great job in your 5K! Congrats on your AG 3rd.
marco: Wow, that was a fast 10 on the TM.
Julia: Great job getting the run in on the TM--I can understand being sick of it.
Pressing: Glad you're getting some good swimming, too. Hope you enjoyed the spinning.
Docket: That's a bummer about the reflux.
SIAR: Great job with your easy 6+. Glad you had a great run yesterday.
I got in a short (<4 mi) recovery run this morning. Legs are not feeling too bad, but they need to rest up before harder workouts start again midweek (SRD tomorrow).
Here's a link to a pic of me in the 5K last week (I was trying to catch the guy in the jacket, did not make it!):

Damaris - Sounds like a rest day is what you need. Hope you feel better.
RVD - Awesome job on the 5K and the MP miles on Sunday!
Marco - I'm glad you got out to see the movie. Good job getting the TM miles in. I know what you mean about pushing the pace on the treadmill. For me I keep knocking the speed up so I can get off the damn thing sooner!
Pressing - Happy 65th(ish) birthday to your Mom! Don't you just love those teacher training days? I bet THEY love em a lot!
SIAR - I don't mind cold and I don't mind wet but I really don't like running in the cold AND wet together. 6.44 is usually just a warm up for you!
I ended up running the 12 but I guess the LR on Saturday took more out of me than I realized. I struggled right out of the gate. Running up the big hill that starts every run in my neighborhood was tough and it took about 4 miles before I finally felt warmed up. From there it went OK but I had lots of negative thoughts and considered cutting it short several times.
I'm supposed to have a RD on Wednesday but I think I'm going to switch it around and take a RD tomorrow. Temps in my neck of the woods are supposed to be in the 60's that day so I can take advantage of that and I won't have to try and run 8 miles at work tomorrow.
Have a good night all!
ETA - Great pic NTS! Enjoy your SRD tomorrow. :-)
