I used to race against the authors father (Dick Hessler), but only had success once he reached his 50s (and I was in my late 20s). These days he coaches, runs his 60 miles a week, but enters very few races. I knew his son, Peter, was an outstanding runner, but had no idea he wrote for the New Yorker. What a great article!
