All Winter long I maintained weekly long runs of 10-11 miles...no sweat (literally and figuratively...wait, I was sweating, just under eleventy layers of clothes, heh). My last 2 long runs (13 and 14 miles) have kicked my ass, though. Sheesh, last Fall I was running these distances without much issue, but my body really got used to stopping at 10-11 miles and that's about where I'm running out of gas. Gah, how in the heck will I run twice that far?! Tongue

I'm not too different from you in terms of my marathoning experience - I've only run one and that was three years ago before the first number in my age started with a 4 (yikes!). I was very under trained for the race and had to stop running for months to recover and heal.

This time I planned my buildup months in advance (actually 6) and when I planned my long runs, the high mileage it seemed pretty crazy. I didn't really understand how I would go that far, but I just figured it would all work out. The winter was so rotten this year, I did A LOT of running on treadmills and on indoor tracks in the winter and I was very nervous about doing my long runs outside.

Then something odd happened last weekend when I did an 18.5 mile long run - I ran the distance and it wasn't that hard. I was tired, no doubt about it, but I still could have gone farther. I think this was the first time since I started training that I actually believed that I could run the stupid race. I won't qualify for Boston and will probably be passed by a several 70 year old women, but I'm pretty sure I can finish.

When you start to build up miles pounding out an 18-20 miler will be easier than you think. The key (at least for me) was to bump up my total weekly mileage and build a base. That's what everyone on the message boards (who's opinions I respect) says and I believe it's true.

So I wouldn't be concerned at all because you still have a long way to go and you're already half way there!!
