| Kristen, are you trying to run slower? (Read 165 times) |

I have to admit, I was being a little nosey and took a peak at your training log (I have to keep track of my competition for the race ) and noticed that you are trying to do easy runs. I'm actually trying to do the same thing, but I'm having a heck of a hard time. I always find myself running too quickly and end up trying to force myself to run slowly.
I've always just gone out and ran and ended up pushing myself too hard. I think I'm getting paranoid about training too hard.

Yep...though all the snow helps...can't help but run slow on that garbage, LOL!
I do want to really follow the advice of some of the more experienced runners and make my easy runs EASY, that way I will have lots of power and strength in my legs to do my hard runs hard without burning out. The school of thought on making easy runs as easy as possible is that fast runs and races will actually be faster. I think I have seen it said that there should be at least 1.5-2 minutes pace difference between easy and tempo runs, so I try to keep that in mind. It's hard, though. My slow/easy pace feels so pokey. I'm paranoid that people who see me running are thinking "jogger." |

I find it so hard to add the extra minute or two to my pace. I'm certainly not as good of a runner as many of the people here and I can't pound out a seven minute mile anytime I want, but I can't seem to do an easy run. If I'm outside I start slow, but before I even realize I'm doing it, my speed picks back up (what would I do without the Garmin to keep me in line). If I'm on a treadmill I always end up bumping up the speed. I keep looking at the people next to me and have to be sure to run faster.
I'm glad to know that I'm not the only person who finds it hard to keep up the "easy" pace.
Not that I'm counting or anything, but just 221 days until the Lakefront Marathon! |

And I just registered this AM...
My Garmin really is a good tool. I need to start making use of the virtual partner to beep at me when I go too fast, I think. |

He could be a spy from another marathon site trying to get pointers.....I hope he doesn't try to get any tips from me because I may not be the best source.
I ran the first 12 miles of my long run today purposely very slow and my knees were just killing me. I pick up the pace the last 3 and felt just fine. Go figure. |

Sometimes running slow does hurt...seems completely counterintuitive, doesn't it?
Heh...ooh, a marathon spy. I have yet to run one, so I could give all sorts of lame advice, I'll bet! |

I'm trying the running slower thing too, but it isn't working out well. I do what I think is a slow, easy run & find I'm still a minute faster than I was this time last year. I'm going to do a short, tempo run tomorrow, so I'll see what my pace is for that. If it is the same or just 15 sec faster, then I need to find a way to slow myself down. Maybe you'll have to run w/ me Kirsten & step on the backs of my shoes!! |

Eryn...you really should not be doing "tempo" runs yet. Seriously...don't say I didn't tell you so when you're back on the bench, girly. Long (at easy pace) and easy should be it. Go ask the peeps in the Swamp if you don't believe me. If you end up benched for the better part of another year (again) I'm gonna come hurt you... |

Hi Eryn,
I agree with what Kristen said about the tempo runs. It's best to have a solid base and start ramping up miles slowly (distance and pace) before you worry too much about speed. I've had problems in the past where I would try to do every run at a fast pace and ended up with any injury. Although it's hard to go slow sometimes, and I'm living proof, try to pace yourself the best you can. |

Eryn and I run races neck-and-neck...yet I run my training runs about a full minute slower than she does. She's killing herself in training and battling injury after injury. Coincidence?
Easy runs easy, hard runs hard. There shouldn't be any hard runs in her training for at least a few months. I know the experienced runners generally say a good base of 25-30 miles/week for a few months before even thinking about throwing in any speed work. So far, so good for me. |

Amen, Sister!!!
Like I mentioned, I've hurt myself enough times now to be almost know better. |
