I have never had an MRI or even an x-ray (aside from teeth). What does the MRI involve? I've had a mammogram...it's the same sort of technology, right (aside from the boobie squishing)?

you pretty much lay completely still inside a tube for a half-hour or so. The ones I've had normally go through 3 separate passes of 10-15 minutes, then you can move a little. I don't know about the mammogram. Don't think I'll have to, but the prostate exam coming up sure sounds fun...

Mammogram is a piece o' cake. I'm glad I don't have a prostate to check (though the girly exams really blow...speculum...*shudder*).

jon, where exactly in your knee does it hurt? off the top of my head, it kind of sounds like runners knee to me. i would take it easy for 3-5 days and RICE it to see if it helps.

kirsten, i had an MRI done for my stress fracture. it depends on whether or not its an OPEN or CLOSED mri. mine was open and only my lower leg went in. it took about 45 mins and the most important thing is to lie as still as possible. there is no squishing of anything.. they take several images of the injured part and when the image is taken, there is a whole bunch of noise and racket similar to a jack hammer. i was given headphones and had music playing through them and to me, the noise was sort of soothing so i almost dozed off.

anyhow. long and winded answer, yes, it is similar to an x-ray. good luck and please keep us posted! are you still running this week? whats the plan?

but see, a wee can of whoop ass sounds so benign. i'm not sure people would mind having that opened on them, y'know?!???

i'll start with frickin' huge and go from there Evil grin

I will definitely still do the remainder of my runs for the rest of the week. Short runs don't seem to bother my knee much at all. Today the knee even feels pretty good--that's the strangest thing...the pain comes and goes. Stiffness is always present, but not pain.

does anyone else bribe themselves through long runs with yummy treats? if so, what kind? for me:

*coldstones' ice cream
*brownies
*pizza
*cheesecake
*a yummy ice blended coffee drink of some sort
*McDonalds big breakfast

admittedly, i eat most of these things whenever i feel like it but i'll focus on one to get me through a long, sweltering run Big grin

Salty snacks are my weakness. Chips, cheese corn - mmmmmmm. Anything with a lot of salt and grease!

Kirsten, MRI's aren't so bad, especially on lower extremities. It's noisy, but you listen to music on headphones & you can nap, as long as you are still. You just lie there. MRI's of the head & neck are way noisier & if you are claustrophobic, they suck. I'm not claustrophobic & I thought it sucked! Big grin

Jon, welcome to the group. We welcome your complaints with open arms!

I don't have any complaints really. My training has been going exceedingly wonderful, which is unusual. There is an island named Injuria & I have always been the Queen! But I seemed to have passed the title along to my nearest & dearest friend zoom-zoom, damn her knee anyways. My only complaint is one that has went on for 3+ years. After long runs (or anything over 11-12 miles really), I have this pain that I can only describe as...My crotch hurts! Not in the "go see your GYN" sense though. Roll eyes It is more like pain at the pubic symphysis. I'm not sure what it is, why it happens or what to do about it. It hurts after my long runs & the next day, then it is better until the next long run. I did 10.6 tonight with no problem. One more mile & I would have been in pain tonight & barely able to lift my leg to walk up the stairs tomorrow. Other than that, it has been clear sailing so far. *Leans over to knock on wood*

Best & healthy wishes to all on your training.

mmmmm. I feel as though doing a long run on a Saturday gives me license to eat anything I want. I guess I don't use it as the motivation for the run as much as a celebration for the rest of the day (or two).

Chipotle
and
Ice cream

These are my favorite rewards.

Wendy's shakes (and I'm lactose intolerant). makes for a lot of fun, but it's worth it.

Ha, I discovered I was LT after my long runs...I would always make a glass of Carnation Instant Breakfast with a scoop of protein powder and I would always have intestinal "issues" for the remainder of the day...I thought it was my long runs. Then it occurred to me that maybe it was the milk...switched to lactose-free milk and never had any more issues. Bingo!

I tend to tell myself I can have some beers...or pig out after a long run. This is bad, though--I started running 2+ years ago to lose weight and have not lost a single blasted pound! Blush
