Here's a blurb off of the website regarding restrictions during the race. The important quote for me is "Radio headphones are discouraged."
Discouraged doesn't mean prohibited!! It's gonna be iPod city for me.
Restrictions
: Absolutely no support vehicles, animals, bicycles, baby joggers, skateboards, roller skates, in-line skates, roller skis or other wheeled vehicles (except wheelchairs) will be permitted on the race course. Runners receiving aid from any of the aforementioned vehicles will be subject to disqualification.
Radio headphones are discouraged
. Marathon officials reserve the right to disqualify any runner for inappropriate action or behavior – including littering.

Hmmm...It's a USATF sanctioned race, right? Wonder if the officials are simply not planning to enforce the iPod ban. While I don't really mind not having my iPod during races, I know there are always points doing a long race where I appreciate having my tunes--especially if I am in a section of the course with not a lot of people to be social with. My PR'd HM was with my iPod. The HM I did 4-5 weeks later was a USATF race and I didn't bring my iPod...and my time was several minutes slower.
The right playlist definitely makes me run harder and not feel like I'm working as hard--I've seen studies that find the same thing, so it's not just me.

I'm sure it's one of those deals where they just happen to be looking the other way as you run by singing to the song on your iPod. I'm not sure if the music helps me run more quickly, but I'll be out there for about 4 hours and that's a long time to have nothing but my own thoughts for entertainment!

Yeah...my thoughts and my asthmatic wheezing for ~4.5 hours doesn't sound like much fun.

I've done the Lakefront Marathon a handful of times and would really discourage using headphones. After the first 10 miles, there are enough people cheering and people to run and chat with that headphones aren't needed. Plus the scenery and the lake should be enough to distract you from the pain of the last few miles. Besides, in my experience, the fun of doing the marathon is in the people you meet and talk to randomly on your way to the finish.

That's kind of what I've been thinking, Josh. During smaller local races around here my iPod is nice, since I am often alone for a long while, but I would think this race is large enough that I'd never be all alone.

Judging from your pace Kirsten, you will certainly not be alone. Plus, if you wore headphones, you'd never hear the accordion player around mile 3 or 4.

Accordians?! Awesome!!! I am really looking forward to a race in my old home state.

I was born in Appleton, but spent most of my formative years in Door Co. Moved to MI when I was 20, so I have been on this side of the lake for almost 15 years.
