wk 7, or WHAT HURTS (Read 113 times)

missy1102
my leg continues to improve and i'm trying my best to be patient and not ramp up my miles too quickly. i have a measly 38 miles planned this week.. hoping to continue to rehab and move into base building soon.

i can't really say anything hurts this week...yet. fingers crossed. Clowning around

your turn. kristen? jeff? kessler? bueller?

Eh...my right knee is still pissed, but I'm pretty sure I can do my planned 42 this week (had a nice 5 this AM...first mile felt so awkward and stiff after 5 days completely off). I had planned to do a few more than that, originally, but for now I am going to see how doing a long run only every-other week and substituting some biking on those lower mileage weeks treats me. And still continuing to do lots of quad work--at least 4-5 days/week. If I can shake this knee deal in a few weeks I will go back to my regularly planned schedule.

Your 38 may seem measly, but I'll bet you could still kick my ass and probably will. Big grin

I don't have any complaints. got some new shoes today (what a relief) and if it wasn't for this stupid swamp drinking challenge I would probably be in good health. I wish you all the best health and weather!
Hello all,

I'm Jon. Lakefront will be my second marathon. My first was Twincities a couple years ago with my wife and a good friend. This time I am going at it alone so I though I would see if anyone else is out there. Best of luck training all and I am looking forward to complaining to (I mean sharing with) all of you.

Ha, hi, Jon! I hope your complaining training goes well! Big grin

see, i think its all a matter of perspective. since you're planning about 42 miles, if you were forced to cut that in half and run 21 but feel like you could run 42, 21 would feel measly as well.

the only ass kicking i'll do is if you start getting lazy/losing motivation. then you can be sure i'll open a can of whoop-ass Wink

jon, welcome to our group. hope your training is going well!
Still having some "issues" with the achilles tendon and I've shut down for a bit. I'm planning on running tomorrow and I'll see how things go from there. I'm not too worried at this point because I'm feeling better and I still have time befor October rolls around.

I have a feeling that the insoles I tried may have had something to do with my injury. When I started to run more miles at the beginning of June I tried the Superfeet Green insole and all of my problems began then. I had heard a lot of good things about them and the guy at the running store also recommended them, so I tried them. That's really the only thing that changed because I was using the same shoes (with only about 150 miles) and was running less than I had before. I'm going back to my old insoles and hoping for the best. I'm going to try to drop 5 pounds or so to see if that helps.

I was in Washington state last week and did lots and lots of walking around, so I didn't rest enough, but I think the time off of running helped.

It is true. Right now I am planning to scale back my original plan of peaking at ~50 and 3 20 mile long runs (with maybe one of those a 22) to Higdon's Intermediate I plan...which peaks at 42 and only has 2 20 milers. It sucks, since I KNOW that gradually working up to a 50 mile week would have been perfectly reasonable for me--before I f'd up my knee. It's my own dumb fault for doing too much the week after my 25k in May and then trying to ignore my knee when it started talking. I got overly confident, since I have never been injury-prone since I started running. Live and learn. I'll not make that mistake again! Tongue

I have had knee trouble as well. Here is the oddity that is my knee issue:
I can go a short distance with no knee trouble.
If I run at a slower pace, my knee starts to hurt at about 4.5 miles.
If I run at a more brisk pace (for me anyway) then I can get away without experiencing much pain. The trouble with that plan--I can't keep up a pace fast enough to alleviate the knee issue.
Maybe it is all in my head!

I am working off of Higdon's Novice 1 schedule and today I focussed on trying to have a good stride and today I made it 6.6 without any knee pain. Lovely!

Jon, good luck with your own knees. Today I am going to see if I can get a referral to a sports med. doc. It's apparent that nothing in my arsenal (RICE, quad work, more RICE) is doing any good.

Ok, have an appt. with my PCP on Monday...they will likely schedule an x-ray or MRI and then we'll go from there. Man, I wish I could get in earlier than that. I want answers TODAY. Tongue

I have never had an MRI or even an x-ray (aside from teeth). What does the MRI involve? I've had a mammogram...it's the same sort of technology, right (aside from the boobie squishing)?
