I'm finally back above 30 miles for the week and I'm still struggling with a problem that I've had forever - doing my easy runs at a slower pace. I'm deliberately trying to go slower on easy runs, but I end up doing everything at about the same pace, even my long runs. I have to stop this because it’s eventually not going to be good for me because its tough on my legs as time goes by.
I'm also having a problem not swearing at people. I normally do my long runs along a wooded, fairly flat trail called the Bugline Trail. Its great to run on because it goes on for about 16 miles, isn't too hilly and has a soft crushed rock surface. I'm right in the middle of the path, so I can go 8 miles out in either direction. The problem is that the path crosses roads and when I hit a road with traffic I find myself spewing profanities at the drivers if they're in my way. They're not doing anything wrong, but I just hate breaking stride!
This week I plan on bumping up to about 36 miles with my long run of 12.

I'm planning on 38 miles for the week, with a long run of 14 tomorrow. I am LOVIN' this weather, too...lots of days in the 60s. Sure beats running when it's in the 80s and humid.
I hear you on the traffic thing. I HATE having to stop to cross roads. I don't swear out loud, but in my head there are lots of obscenities being tossed around.

I saw that post you made on the Racing forum and the "advice" that someone gave to you about not running the marathon. I didn't say too much there because I don't want to criticize peoples opinion, but he's full of crap. You have a great base in place and all you have to do now is build your long runs and get enough time on your feet and you'll be fine.
When I ran Green Bay I only had one run of 20 miles and a weekly high of 51. You don't have to run 70 mile weeks to finish and enjoy running a marathon. I knew I wasn't going to finish quickly, but I hardly struggled to survive. I just enjoyed the running because I figured that I may never have the opportunity to run a marathon again, so I was going to take in everything. I watched the birds fly around as I ran past the river, laughed at the kids holding signs cheering on their mom or dad and I tried to thank any volunteer that would listen.
There's a lot of people who think you have to run a marathon in under 3:30 to accomplish anything, but don't believe them. Just try to enjoy the whole experience of running, even the training.

Oh, I totally agree. And I knew he was full of shit. If running a marathon were truly a bad idea on a max week of only 50-55 miles, then the vast majority of people who run marathons should probably reconsider.
Funny, I have a little
informal poll
on my blog and I'm right in with the median runners, and this is only my first. Maybe I would try to do 60+ mile weeks in subsequent years. Right now that would take me too long--because I'm no speed demon and I have a kid and a hubby who need bike time, too. As I get faster the miles will come easier.

Hopefully your knee feels better. I'm starting to remember all of the little aches and pains that come (and thank God) go away as you log more and more miles.
When I get back up to about 50 I know I'm going to be sore as hell, but as long as you know what to expect its not so bad.

My knee comes and goes, which is perhaps the most frustrating part. I can go 2-3 days without issue, then it will bother me for a day...then fine for a few more days. It hasn't bothered me at all in days and was perfect on today's run, but an hour or so after I got back it kinda bugged me, again. I don't know what to make of it.
I have a 15k race a week from Sat. and next week is a scale-back week, so I may cut my mileage back a lot more than I had planned and take 2-3 days in a row off from running and concentrate on quad work. At this early stage in the game it shouldn't have too much of an effect on things long-term, I wouldn't think. And better to nip this in the bud now, then have it still nagging me in 4 months.

Week 3: Grandma's marathon. Should be a blast.
I think I shout obscenities 3-4 times per run. Kind of gets the blood pumping.

If I were to ever do a Spring Marathon this is high on my list. Probably my only chance to see the inside of Lambeau. My sister lives a mile or so from the stadium, too, so I would have free lodging.

I would certainly recommend Green Bay, particularly because of running in Lambeau. I just wish it was a little warmer when I ran it because there weren't too many people on the course. It was only in the upper 40's and kind of windy, so I don't blame anyone for not standing around and cheering on the runners.
