How'd it go? My right knee is being a little bitch intermittently, but not enough to slow me down much (I think the heat is responsible for my slower paces of late--and it's not even THAT hot) or stop me. Ran 42 miles this week--highest mileage week ever. With the exception of pain on my long run (not severe, just increasingly nagging for the last 10 miles), I had a good week.
This week (7) is an easier week for me. I'm planning to be more conservative with these weeks than I had originally planned...at least until the knee improves. I have an appt. with my PCP tomorrow to follow-up on my asthma treatment (which is going pretty well-woot), so I think I'm going to mention the knee thing to him, too. I like the guy because he is so pro-fitness, so I don't imagine that he's going to recommend stopping running, but maybe he'll refer me to a sports med doc. |

| Thanks, Jeff! Were it not for the stupid knee I'd probably hit this week pretty hard, too. Other than that little "issue" I feel really strong. As long as I'm injury-free next time around I think I would only take easier weeks ever 4th week, instead of every 3rd. |

So true. Right now I'm not really setting any time goals. I'd like to finish under 4:30, but if it doesn't happen I'm OK with that. My primary goal is to get there and finish...then I can blast that PR the next time around. |

Crap week. Crap. Crap. Crap.
Over the last couple of weeks I've been having a minor issue with my right heel and now its really starting to bother me. Its something that I never had before and I'm not quite sure what's causing my problems.
I have pain in the back of my heal, not the underside, but the back. It goes away after walking or running for a while, but if I sit for any length of time just standing is tough. At first I thought it may be my shoes, but the two pair that I'm using don't have many miles on them and they're the same size/brand that I always wear.
I also thought it may be plantar fasciitis, but it doesn't seem to be in the right area, even though the symptoms seem to be similar.
I still have a lot of time until the race, so I'm not too worried, but I would like to be pain free for a while. I'm going to Seattle this week for a mini-vacation, which will cut me back on running. Maybe this will be the break I need to let some nagging problems go away. |

I get posterior heal pain as well following some weeks. I have gone to the clinic for it and it has been achilles inflammation (retrocalcaneal bursitis). Beneath the heal pain can be a sign of plantar fasciitis, behind the heal pain is commonly achillies inflammation which can be helped with icing, heel inserts, anti-inflammation and stretching. If you're still concerned, obviously a doctor can help.

I was just gonna say...sounds like achilles. I would think that an easy week and plenty of gentle stretching should help that. Tendon stuff sucks, though. It all takes forever to completely resolve.
Went to my doc today for my asthma follow-up. Mentioned my knee issue and the PA who saw me agreed that working the quads is my best course of action, so I'll continue doing that and hope that eventually my knee tendonitis issues disappear at some point BEFORE the race.
Sheesh, we're getting broken in here and we're not even halfway through training. Bah. |

| Thanks for the advice. I have a funny feeling that is just may achilles inflamation too. I think I'm going to take today off as well and maybe cut back to 5 days a week for a while and see how it goes. I've got a pretty good base in and I'm sure I can get enough miles in between now and October, so I'm not too worried - yet. |

| I'm taking today and the next 4 days off to rest my knee. It got really pissed yesterday and then my outer left foot started complaining--I'm sure I was compensating for the right knee, some. Sucks, but I'm hoping that 5 days off will mean that I'm in good shape to run the full distance in Oct. *fingers-crossed* |

I'm tryin'. Today was day 3 of no running and I am getting weird aches and pains all over...I'm guessing it's things stiffening up from lack of running. It stinks! |

I told the PA at my doc's office about my knee issues and that I was doing quad work to help my knee track better. He said that I was right on track and to keep doing it. I'm not convinced it's just patellofemoral pain, though (even though I have a whole lot of the classic symptoms of that). My hips have been a little tight and sore, so I almost wonder if it could be ITBS or maybe a combination of the two. I'm going to do extra ITB stretching and pick up a foam roller and see if that doesn't help, too. It certainly can't hurt.
Walking doesn't bother me so much...at least not at first. I was running a lot of errands yesterday and eventually my knee started to feel sore. It's not a sharp pain, by any means...just a general, dull ache and some knee popping and weakness (though I have always had knees that pop a lot, it just seems worse lately).
If this keeps up I'm going to see about getting in for an appt. with an actual sports med doctor or orthopedist or something. |
