anyone run this series, or any of the races in it, before? was considering it as a way to assure i keep running through the winter but at the same time i've found i really don't like running races that take longer to get to/from than it does to run. 4k? really?
meh
Yes. 4k.
My 5k time is now 3'19" faster. I got stuck in the "crowd" on the downhill from Hogan's fountain, and finally broke free on the flat/first uphill.
The "giveaway" for the 4k was a crappy ornament [and you needed to bring a toy to save $10].
For the 4 miler, it was a cheap pair of cotton running gloves [which I still occasionally use]
The February 5k had a decent L/S technical shirt.
You got a crappy pre-shrunk cotton tee for finishing [registering for] all three.
Also, 3rd Saturday in December and January seem to have fairly high chances of either snow / ice / unbearable cold.
Recommendation:
- Santa Sprint and Stroll 5k in December [see related thread] - last year there was a "please don't give me a t-shirt" option
- Hangover Classic 10 miler in January - I actually like the dark L/S t-shirt they provide, and the weather seems to be manageable.
- Frostbite 5k in Feb [third leg of the Grand Prix] - technical shirt came with this in years past.
"You can't untrain for Monkey" - bdub
Thanks for the info.
I may follow your recommendations. The hangover classic was on my radar after reading about it on the other thread. I saw the info on the Santa Sprint, but not sure if I will make that. I'm planning on doing the Harvest Run in Middletown on 11/21 and not sure I'll be able to convince the wife that I should do both. Santa seems like it'll probably be a better run, but I like the convenience of being able to run to Middletown as my warmup.
FYI...just re-read the email from RCR. Looks like Frostbite 5k is the second leg this year on Jan 16
Hmm... the structure has probably changed some, then.
MTA: Nope, just the January/February races have flipped.
4K: My ornament broke...cat casualty, and the $10/toy is really for those who are feeling bad about their charitable givings for the past year.
4 miler: Cotton gloves. Actually a lot more useful than I gave them credit for.
5K: Very nice technical shirt (Brooks, I think!) which was the highlight of the 3 races.
All the races are run in Cherokee Park at various points around the park. If weather is an issue, snow and/or high water are usually a factor for all 3 races merely given the time of year.
I only recommend the Frostbite 5K for the technical shirt. The 4 miler is worth it for the distance, but not necessarily the gloves. The 4K is just not worth it for any reason other than charity. They're all, at best, "fun" runs which are not for anyone looking to set a PR unless you are leaning over the start line and can get out ahead of the pack. And the pack is usually tight with people just looking to keep warm.
