Those who post or lurk in the swamp will recognize
Pete Magill's blog
. He is SoCal Pete from Letsrun and the oldest American runner under 15 minutes for 5K: 14:49 (road) - age 47 and 14:34.27 (track) - Age 46. I'm turning 40 this year and have my sights set on the 5K after Boston, so I find this particularly interesting. Plus he has a lot of tips on staying healthy and it seems like there are a lot of Shamrocks nursing injuries, so I thought I'd share.
He has regular features including the morning read--
today's on 5K racing is excellent
--as well as interviews with different masters runners and coaches.
His
5K training article
is one of my personal favs and one that I'll be exploring in more detail after Boston.
Luti 2010. It won't come down to a kick this year. Thunder by 20+ seconds. Put that in your pipe and smoke it

Thanks for posting. I'll check out his "staying healthy" content. I have to say I have actually liked turning 40. I turn 41 in a couple weeks. My running is nothing to brag about but I still skate with 20-somethings and hang with them. For some reason it's more impressive at 40 than it was at 39. Think of all the age group trophies that will be your for the pickings soon.

Thanks Mike -
I took a quick spin around and the blog looks great! I just added it to my Reader - I don't have any running related blogs on there so this will be a welcome addition.
I look forward to see what happens to your 5K PRs once you start focusing on the short stuff.

A snippet:
I coach my athletes to run based upon effort. Not time.
I tell them, "When you learn to run by effort, you'll learn how to race." I say, "The pace you can run during a workout, when you're not rested, not going 100%, and not mentally prepared to race will never be equivalent to what you can run in an actual race." I warn them, "A predetermined race pace is only this: a guess. If we knew what the right pace was before the race, then there'd be no reason to don race bib and flats and kill ourselves running the real deal. Everyone could just take their workout splits, feed them into a calculator, mail their projected results to the race director - who would then declare a winner and send out trophies."
My athletes all nod their heads. They tell me, Sounds great. And then they say, "But what should I run for my first mile split?"
Love it. Well worth the read, thanks for posting mikey. And based on last night's stroll along the Merrimack, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you can do when you "turn your attention to it".
