Finances have been tight and so I still haven't ponied up and gotten my pool card. However, I'm still here, at least.
Nice 2000+ workout there, Slo_Hand!
Speed my steps along your path, according to your will.
New guy to the group and not much of a swimmer. Never had a swim lessen and mostly stayed out of the water.
500 to 1000 yds, 4-5 days over my lunch break. I've never been fond of the water, but I would like to start competing in some triathlons so looks like I need to start swimming. I would like to compete the Ironman distance in a couple years time.
I joined the local YMCA on Jan 15th and have 21900 yards logged to date, but still can't swim more then 150 yards without stopping, so I do 50 yard intervals hoping to start building up some endurance.

Burnt Toast.....Stick with it. You will have several break thru's.
I was laid up with a stress fracture late this fall and swimming was the one thing that kept me sane.
I never swam competitively. I did one of my first Tri's in the Early 80's in Germany. It was everything I had to get thru that 1000m swim. I had survival skills thanks to the military......it got me thru it and several more after that. I really didn't learn to swim correctly until about 4 to 5 years ago.
When I first got back into the water to actually learn how to swim correctly my swim instructor said....."Ok, show me what you got".......Her next remark was....."How much time before this Triathlon".....I replied "5 months".......To which she said...."Oh good, I was afraid you were looking for a miracle.......you still might be." I was a fast learner and really took to the water. I spent alot of time in the water and that's what it takes.......just like running and biking.
What does an Engineering specialist do? That's my title too......
I wish you the best on your journey to become an Ironman. I trained for one a few years ago but backed out on the final drop out date. Several reasons.....I don't know if you would ever feel like you trained enough for one......Heck, I think that when it comes to doing an Oly distance.
I work in the engineering office at a Central MN County Public Works department. I am a road, storm sewer and detention pond designer for the county as well as one of the construction inspectors for our road construction projects.
I have a class tonight that runs for the next four weeks at the YMCA called "Intro to lap swimming and stroke improvements". It is supposed to be for people interested in lap swimming for fitness and are comfortable in the water. I hope its not over my head (literally) since I'm not necessarily comfortable yet.
I think I hit one of those break thru's two weeks ago as the laps were seeming to become easier and faster at the same time. I started doing a lap in about 1:25 or so and rested for 35 seconds at the wall to let my HR drop for a 2:00 min 50 yard interval. I had progressed down to a 56 second 50 yard lap and then rested for a 1:25 interval. Last week the wheels fell off and I felt like I did on my first day in the pool on Jan 15th. I couldn't get into a decent breathing pattern and my HR was sky high so I cut every swim session short. I figured it was time to check out the "Intro to lap swimming" class so I'm taking the plunge tonight.

Now I'm falling asleep at my desk...

Been MIA for long time here.
Been swimming only the past 18 months, swam 2200 m yesterday.
No tri's just fitness.
You haven't missed much. This forum has been dead.
My swimming has been zilch lately....Plans are to hit the pool next week. Soon the outdoor pools will be open.

Hello to all the Swimmers.
I want to start swimming.
As quoted above, I too never had a lesson and avoided the water most of my life.
Still trying to muster the courage to go to public Lap Swim at the local public pool actually

Hi Diana,
I'm here, and there are a couple of others that have posted here in the past year. Mostly, though, it's dead. BurntToast is our resident swimmer. From his original post in March 2010, he struggled in his 2nd month of swimming. In 2012, he's scheduled to swim 190 miles for the year. That's a lot.
Regardless, both him and I come from other areas of activity and began swimming +/- 3 years ago.
We're not fast former collegiate swimmers. There may be some lurking within the forum.
Welcome. Enjoy.
To start, you must start with short intervals. If you run / bike, it may be frustrating, because you'll be limited to 1 - 3 minute swimming sets rather than 20 - 60 minutes of continuous running. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED.
For me, swimsmooth.com has been a tremendous tool to help me understand what I'm supposed to look like in the water.

Life Goals:
#1: Do what I can do
#2: Enjoy life
Hi, I'm a female former YMCA then college (div 3) swimmer. I was never fast, but I loved it before I got a bit burnt out in college.
I'm in my 40s now and still not too fast. I swim for fitness and to do a sprint triathlon or two. I'd like to do an Oly AquaBike (swim/bike only) in June 2013.
Yes, I know this is a running site. I do run some, when I'm not being lazy or injured. I seem to have a touch of plantar faciitis in one foot and maybe piriformis in the opposite hip. I'm working on stretching and will start some easy run/walk today. I've only run a few times since summer.
On the swimming front, I swim alone during my lunch break from work twice a week. I only do about 1200 yards each day by the time I drive to and from the pool, change and shower, etc. I've joined in on Masters workouts a few times, but they are far from my house and really eat up time that I don't have with a 7 year old son and full time work.

Hi guys!
Rusty, I have PF as well and I tried pretty much everything, well, everything except quitting running LOL.
I found that Yoga has strengthened my lower legs and feet and almost completely gotten rid of it. Just something to consider, not sure if they offer it at your gym. It helps with swimming too, for added flexibility
