Ultra Runners

26th annual Glacial 50k / 50 Mile October 14th (Read 547 times)

Oh roo roooo!

You folks that ran Glacial are even more amazing than I have seen in the past!  Like DB said, 53 and rain isn't that big a deal for a while, but 53, steady HEAVY rain and crap footing for hours and hours is a HUGE deal.  I worked the Hwy. 67 aid station up to about 11:30 AM and I was continually astounded by how good people actually looked, considering they were absolutely drenched and had to be working hard out there.

Normally we get a few people every year who come thru that first section bleeding out their knees, having fallen on the "pointy rocks" section that I have heard described.  This year, either no one fell or the rain washed the blood away before they got to our station!  Actually, the RD did call us to let us know that someone had sprained their ankle in that first section and dropped, so we could remove their name from our list.  I was really concerned about people falling and getting hurt out there in those conditions and hope everyone made it with no permanent damage.

A friend of a friend was out there doing her first ultra--I can't imagine!  Guess pretty much any other one she does will have to be better!

Hats off to you guys--I know Glacial is a tough course in a good year.  You are incredible to run it so well in a year like this!

Rain washed the blood and mud away

Also you had to run conservative on downhills

finally - The blood from when I fall is from the sliding on the rock hard dirt - Abrasion.  That was not very likey

Long dead ... But my stench lingers !

Just kidding ~ Some years it seems to take a week.

Wow - My legs are still blasted

This is the worst they quads and calves have felt in 3+ years post any race distance.  But it is a good hurt ~ not an injury hurt.

I managed a 5 mile slog on TM yesterday and a 7 mile wobble outside this morning.

              +1

I didn't feel like I really gave a maximum effort during the race, and I'm surprised by how trashed my legs are.  Trying to run is a joke.  I managed 8 miles yesterday at a 10 minute pace and actually had to WALK a little bit.

Luckily no knee pain.  My hamstring is acting up a little, but nothing new on that front.

Next race is JFK50 and I'm hoping I recover completely.

Yeah, I'm still a little beat up myself.  Took off Monday and Tuesday, 6-miler and deep-tissue massage on Wednesday, off Thursday, and an easy 9-miler this morning.  Fall 50 relay tomorrow in Door County.

Gonna do a 30/20 back-to-back (in preparation for JFK) next week Thursday and Friday afternoons (taking a half-day vacation on Thursday) if anyone is interested in logging some road miles in the Appleton area....

Feeling better this weekend.  Hamstring still bothering me.  Managed a decent 10 miles with a couple of buddies today.  Figure the rain/sloppy conditions at Glacial accounted for about 5-8 minutes of total time for the 50k; obviously longer for the 50M.  On the other hand the cool weather was quite helpful and I only drank about 30 ounces during the race.

Funny I drank 150 ounces from camelback and slammed 10-12 cups of whatever was handy (water or heed), took 5 s-caps.  I was rolling on the ground after the race everytime I tried to get my shoes or socks off from cramps.  I never get cramps?  I did not have them in the race - But I also rarely have any issues post race.

PS - I then added to the dehydration issue by drinking @ 8 beers.  I got home weighing 11 pounds less then when I left in the morning.

I wish I had seen this thread earlier!  I ran the 50K for the second year in a row and scored myself an hour course PR, despite the conditions.  What a fun day!

                              Running is dumb.
