Tessa, I think it's worth reaching out to your DH's family.  As others have said, his family may or may not want to hear from you, but it's worth the effort just in case there is a chance of salvaging the relationship for the next generation.  If the family hear from the insurer instead of you, that would pretty much ensure the break won't be repaired.  While maybe both sides could have done more over the years, this could be a chance to move past that.  Or not.  But I think it's worth a try, and if your efforts aren't well received, well, at least you tried and then you can move on knowing you did what you could.
