Weird thing to note was that my heart rate seemed pretty high for the first few miles and I tried to get it down as I "knew" it would rise over time like it normally does. I guess the weird part was that most races start early in the morning at the coolest part of the day and get hotter as the race goes on. Heart rate goes up with the heat. At this one, we started at the hottest part of the day, then heart rate went down as the sun went down and the evening cooled off quite a bit. I guess the high heart rate at the beginning of the race alarmed me so I slowed down. By the time I realized that it was totally temperature related and I had lots of "room" between actual HR and where it normally is during training or a race - I was too tired to step on the gas. |
