Notes

Still waiting for the official time and OA. 1st AG. I think 7th OA.

Saw Ryan Keiser in the lineup. He took first in the 5K last month against me. Thought this would be more representative of our actual running ability since the course is flatter -- and there's no snow. So, my goal was to keep him in range with the idea of overtaking him in the 3rd mile if I was within striking distance

This did not happen.

After stupid racing strategy (or lack of strategy) for more other two 5Ks, I figured I should settle down with a semi-plan for this one. The idea was to go out "comfortable" and try for negative-split/effort. The course is more uphill on the way back, so I'd take that into account. But the main idea was to focus on my effort.

The first mile felt slightly easy. Breathing was good. Pace felt like I could keep it for a half-marathon. Hit the first mile in 5:43. Faster than I thought -- but again, the effort was easy. Ryan was 20m ahead.

Going up to the turn-around at the half, I saw #1 saunter by with a 70m lead on #2. #2 had a 50m lead on #3. Ryan was in the 4,5,6 bundle, mostly trading with Hernan. At the half he was already out of contact range. I passed the half and Coach called out 9:09 for me. The guy ahead of my wasn't catchable either. He had about 40m on me.

Uphill in mile 3 was challenging. I tried hard to keep my pace the same. I never looked at my watch in the race. But in the second half of 3mi I was holding on a bit. It was a struggle for the last 800m. Then on the runway to the finish I started my kick but there wasn't much there. I had a fear I'd run out of all juice just 100m from the line. I pumped my arms to keep my pace up and found a very athletic gear somewhere in the bottom of my gearbox. Wish I had found it sooner. But I made it over the line with nothing left in the tank.

Beat Deric (19:10PR) and Rick (not sure). I think I'm either 7th or 8th.

No breathing issues. And I paced this pretty well. Rather happy with the results. Now I just need to drop the 9 extra pounds I'm carrying around because of Xmas.
