Notes:I love the AFC Half course. It starts on a hilltop that gives a view of all of San Diego Harbor and miles of the coast in both directions. We had the moon on one side and the sun rising over the city on the other.
Then it goes through some rolling hills and down to the harbor, along the harbor and the beach for miles, then finishes with a climb, two miles getting steeper and steeper, up from the ocean to finish in Balboa Park.
I saw Nate Heintzman and Peter Nerothin from Insulindependence, and Jeff McDermott.
It was a nice day. A lot of people were complaining about the heat and humidity, (61% hum.). I saw a couple of people collapsed from the heat, a woman at about 3 miles and a man about half a mile from the finish. But I was fine. I even skipped most of the water stops, just because they were so crowded. I think I grabbed water at two stops, and I ran through two of the three sprinkler tunnels they had.
I might have been able to run it a little faster, but I started way in the back. 9 minute difference between my gun time and my chip time. I was trying to meet up with Nate before the start. So I spent pretty much the whole race, except for the last uphill mile, dodging and squeezing through the crowd. I took an elbow on my Garmin that knocked it half off the watchband. I wrapped a bracelet over it to hold it down.
There is a psychological boost from passing people for most of a race.
Blood sugar was good. I was at 150 before the start, but on a downward trend from insulin I had given earlier. (I was a little high, over 200, when I woke up.) So I ate a gel right before the start. Didn't eat during the race. Was at 117 at end.
