Notes:(UPDATE 7/18/09) - Finally, race results posted. They must have been missing some sticks. Was 19th overall rather than 21st.

Feeling pretty good physically, HR a tad elevated, weather right on the edge. I've set the Garmin to alert me every 6:30 so I can evaluate effort.

We have 312 runners. I line up on outside edge a few steps behind the front row to allow best and least obstructed tangent on first turn. Also have good view of field. About 50 or so take off fast. Climb, left turn, level, sharp reverse S turn, short drop and then into second climb. As predicted, by the top of the second hill, the top 10%-12% of the field is established. I'm looking to get down a steep drop onto a flat stretch and find my stride before we start a gentle quarter mile climb to the park running trail. Pass a few people, running comfortably hard, but never really find that smooth rhythm. 1st Garmin alert and I'm within an arm's reach of mile marker. 6:31.

Most of mile two is on a 6-foot running trail, has some tight turns, a short one-lane foot bridge, and three climbs, two of which are significant. I'm focused on not blowing myself up on these and being ready for a strong finish. Post-race graph showed I took the small one at 7:25, but slowed to near 8:30 on both of the long steep ones. Alert goes off during third climb and I'm about 15 seconds from the 2 mile mark. 6:49.

Begin third mile in middle of climb. I'm feeling pretty good and thinking this is last of "heavy lifting". After topping hill, I progress over the next 0.4 mile to a sub-6 pace. Final turn, final hill. First time I ran it, I had characterized it as a "speed bump". I got over it today slowing only to 7:36, but much much more of an effort than I anticipated. (During today's - Sunday - Long Run, I approached it from a different direction and see where I made my miscalculation. The road turns from concrete to asphalt. Coming out of the turn, you approach it from straight on. It appears the climb starts at the asphalt and is steep but short. No, the climb starts on the 100 meter stretch of concrete, it is steep when you hit the asphalt, and due to the grade, it appears shorter than it actually is.) The top is the 2.6 mile mark and I progress again into a sub-6 pace before slowing a tad going over a bridge, making a turn into the parking lot, and trying to figure out which is the male finish chute. 6:37 and a 0.39 finish.

Did not realize I was "racing" that last half mile. Three runners in right behind me. All said after race they were in pursuit, but couldn't close.

20:36 is new PR by a couple of seconds. However, never ran close to this time on hilly course or in this weather. 23th overall, 2nd AG to Schmiz. B-Mil in 3rd - never finished ahead of him before. The Professor in at 25th. Never finished ahead of him before either. Since December 2008 have closed on Schmiz in every race. Started at 1:25. Today 0.22 seconds.
