Forerunner 10 as a "regular" watch? (Read 339 times)

The band broke on my trusty Casio (making it, I guess, not that trusty), and it's built in a way that I can't just get a cheapo replacement from Wal-mart, I have to get one specially-made for that model.

Wouldn't be that big of a deal to just get another (except for the feeling of getting "suckered" by Casio), but I wouldn't mind having a backup GPS, and those Forerunner 10's look like they aren't much bigger than my old watch.  Can they display just the time of day?  And only slightly less important, can you turn off the GPS function so that it doesn't beep at me every time it loses signal?

Even if the answer is "yes," might still be a bad idea, since I'd have to worry about keeping it charged, and even then, the battery would (I assume) die a lot more quickly from all-day use, every day.  Just ruminating.

I wear my 405 a lot as just my regular watch... I'd assume the 10 would work the same, as long as you turn OFF the gps when not running.

I wear my 610 as a daily watch, actually it is on me right now!

The time screen is basically the "lock" screensaver screen. It disables the GPS and sensory searching of your watch, so no worries of battery drain. It's basically a trickle. I was injured in late Feb, the went on a 2 week vacation in March when I could have resumed running. Wore my watch as a daily time piece the whole time, so 6 weeks total. Never needed charging the whole time.

If anything, my 610 works better than any of my other watches. It has the date on the screen all the time, along with the day of the week as a whole word ontop of my large numbered time display(I work from home, so I rarely know off the top of my head what the day/date is). And the light is so much better on this watch! And it is cool.....how many common non running people have a white Garmin? I get lots of compliments/questions.

Mostly, if it talks to me or not. Which I find funny! But I don't have a car Garmin, so I guess they do that.

            Cool, thanks, guys!

So I guess my only question now is, can the 10 display just the time (and maybe date) like the full-featured models do?

I just looked at my 10 this morning as it sat plugged into the USB hub and it was displaying just the time...Not sure about the date though as I didn't pay it no mind.

              Mmmmm...beer

Yup, my 10 displays date and time when I don't have it on one of the other screens.  I've read that the battery only lasts about 5 hours, altho I can't attest to that, I run with it and put it back on the charger.  Longest I've gone is 1:45 and it had lost a bar from the battery display (can't remember if there are three or four bars).  Also, it will only acquire a gps signal when you tell it to, so no worries about it beeping at you.

Hmm, okay.  Thanks for the input!  Sounds like it might not have the battery life mentioned for the other models, unless I want to charge it every night.

I wear my Forerunner 10 all the time and have not even turned it off since I got it back in Nov.

The display shows the time and date.

The 5 hour battery life is while in GPS mode only, it should last a couple weeks at least if used just as a watch.

I got my son a 10 for Christmas. We charged it, but he hasn't used it yet. It's sitting on his desk in his room and I noticed that it constantly displays the date/time and it was just this morning that I looked it again and noticed that it's one bar down on the charge icon. and it's been fully charged for about a week now.
