There are a lot of folks here who run outstanding marathon times and who still race other distances -- and race them well. It's not an either/or proposition.
Plus some of us run mediocre marathon times and race lots of other distances
It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

Race 2: 3:53

#1) 4/20/70 Boston 2:59:50
#2) 5/25/70 Plodders 3:21:52 - probably trained too much in those 5 weeks and definitely went out way too fast in the second
#3) 6/7/70 Holyoke 3:13:53 - two weeks later with a noon start, temps reached the 90s, not good marathon weather
2024 Races:
03/09 - Livingston Oval Ultra 6-Hour, 22.88 miles
05/11 - D3 50K 05/25 - What the Duck 12-Hour
06/17 - 6 Days in the Dome 12-Hour.

I think FMM was in Nov. 2005 and CMM was in April 2006. Wow, that was almost 9 years ago.
It took me 5 years of steady training to run faster than 2:38:06.

Ironically since that day in December 2007, when I ran a 3:21:07, I have only been able to squeeze another 26 seconds out of my PR (3:20:41) with 11 marathons now under my belt. Will make another attempt to break that pattern next month in Boston.

Thank God there is someone here in my group. I really trained well for #2, but everything fell apart on race day. I showed up... without my gear.... without my bib... without my fuel....
#1) 4:40. I trained just enough to get up to a marathon distance, and the weather actually helped a lot.
#2) 5:30 - Indoor marathon. Different in so many ways. Hell, Id rather do a FM on a TM than on a 0.2 track of cement.
#3) same course as #1, coming up in 70 days. Cant wait to improve. Goals are Sub 4 or at least sub 10:00 pace.

Thank you for this advice and reasoning. I hope I am smart enough to do this when I attempt my first this Fall.
For me even after 30+ marathons, running a conservative 1st race through 20 miles and then lower the hammer the last 10k would be the right choice. It allowed me to be successful, to feel great the whole race and be excited and confident how I could improve in the next race.

I was elated with the debut, slightly disillusioned with the follow up (goal was 2:30 to 2:32), got injured during the recovery, and didn't run another for 16 years. In the meantime ran PRs for just about every other standard distance from the 800 meters to 10 mile.

Having just run my first marathon using this method, I highly recommend it. It felt so good to finish strong and pass some people at the end. I'll report back next year with how much faster I run the second one.
