Sub 1:30 Half Marathon 2021 Edition (Read 448 times)

Flavio -- 10C/ 50F is cold???? What??  That is ideal running weather, especially for a marathon! That said, upper ab cramps are the worst!!! So painful they sometimes make you think you can't breathe. ugg . FWIW I think you have the fitness to go sub-3 but you missed a few weeks, workouts and long runs this cycle and everything really just has to come together perfectly for a marathon including on race day and a second shot during taper could easily have derailed things. Still that's a huge PR and you should be proud of that race. Enjoy your week off.

    1600 - 5:23 (2018), 5k - 19:33 (2018), 10k - 41:20 (2021), half - 1:38:57 (2018), Marathon - 3:37:17 (2018)

Flavio excellent race report. I think you did amazingly well considering all the stress you have been under during training. I was a 1.22 half guy when I snuck under the 3 hr mark and my cycle had far less interruptions than yours. You are also a bigger guy more suited to mid distance and I know you struggle with mileage over 90 kms or so per week which for marathon training is barely enough to get you to full potential. Hopefully the marathon motivation will return once the dust settles. You may find yourself in a settled uninterrupted training cycle in the future, where mileage is higher and you can attack the marathon again.

Flavio - nice RR.  I guess you're so used to warm weather, that 50 F with wind feels very cold.  I would have had had gloves and a beanie, and if I got too warm I would have put the beanie in my short pocket.  Your splits don't look like you struggled that early.

        Zebano - nice week.

Keen - it will be interesting to see how fast you are in the Sky's, as opposed to it just feeling bouncy.

Flavio - I commented over in the sub-3 thread but... great job despite everything that went on.

Also just ignore everyone who says you should or shouldn't do another marathon.  Once the dust settles and the painful tight muscles have subsided, you'll know what you want to do next.

The forums can get really opinionated.  I remember people being quite critical of your training volume for your first marathon.  Possibly you may have gone a little quicker with more training volume (alternatively you might have got injured), but even so you're just a (very good) hobby jogger so your training doesn't have any material impact on anyone else.

Ha, the people I consider "hobby joggers" have never posted their weekly training, let alone every week for years.

I wasn't sure whether Watson was talking about Flavio or me but anyone who is as nuts about running as we all clearly are is unlikely to be a hobby jogger.  I just think of myself as a runner.

Steve - just saw Dunedin's cancelled.  Bugger.

Hadn't seen that.  Thankfully I have Selwyn now...I can't get my flights back (yet) as they're after October 31.  I hadn't entered Dunedin yet so that's one less entry to carry over to next year.

Almost certainly means the same will happen with Nelson for me although I'd pretty much written that off already anyway.

Doesn't look great for Queenstown either, although that was going to be tough on 13 days recovery.  We're still going to travel there though, either way.  Thank goodness for Selwyn and Oska

I'm genuinely surprised they're still promoting Queenstown so hard on social media.  Unless they're hoping the whole vaccination passport gig will be in place by then.

You'd have to think Dunedin got some inside info from somewhere to cancel 4 weeks out.  The Queenstown mayor has been great at pushing for Queenstown events, retailers and tourist operators admittedly without much luck yet but I would say he's doing everything he can to reduce costs/risks for the organizers.  The Dunedin council would probably be the opposite.

Possibly.  Given it's a club-run event, they've also tended to take a more conservative approach than the commercially-managed events because they're only doing it for fundraising (not for a living).  They pulled the pin quite early last year as I recall too.

Re event promotion, they just rollover the entry to the next year, so they get the revenue quicker.
